No life jackets, captain on drugs: Two young girls among three dead after boat capsizes off Pulau Perhentian during storm
JERTIH, June 29 — Two girls, aged three and 10, were among three people killed when a boat capsized off Pulau Perhentian last night.
Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu identified the deceased in the 10.30 pm mishap as S. Arumugam, 40, his three-year-old daughter A. Sarrvihka, and a 10-year-old relative, V. Vennpani.
He said 12 others in the boat, including a six-year-old who was in critical condition, were rushed to Besut Hospital for treatment.
The boat, carrying 15 passengers, aged between three and 40 years, capsized during a storm, heavy rain and rough sea, he told a press conference at the Besut District Police Headquarters, here today.
Azamuddin said that based on the investigation, all of them were not wearing life jackets.
He said the boat driver, in his 20s, has been detained to assist in the investigation.
The boat driver, who is a local, tested positive for drugs and has five records for drug-related offences, he added.
He advised the public to prioritise the safety of their family members while at resort beaches.
Boat operators, he said, should also prioritise tourist safety and comply with all regulations, especially regarding the mandatory use of life jackets. — Bernama

'The scammers promised a 10 per cent return within days, prompting the victim to transfer RM275,000 in eight transactions between May 27 and June 13 to two company accounts under the names Cisi Infra Solution and Cisi CPT Infra Trading,' he said in a statement today. When no profits were received, the victim grew suspicious as the scammers continued requesting more money, claiming it was needed to release his returns and initial capital. He eventually lodged a police report at the Baling District Police Headquarters yesterday after realising he had been cheated. Loi advised the public to verify any investment offers with the police or nearby stations and to use tools such as the Mule Check app, the CCID Facebook page, or contact the National Scam Response Centre at 997. — Bernama

Probe into Daim's ‘undeclared assets' widens to 4 more countries

PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has expanded its probe into allegedly undeclared assets linked to the late Daim Zainuddin to four more countries. An MACC source said the assets suspected as belonging to Daim's family and proxies were located in the US, Singapore, Japan, Italy, and the island of Jersey, a British crown dependency located off the coast of Normandy, France. The source said the anti-graft agency intends to apply for restraining orders in these countries to prevent the disposal or movement of the assets during investigations, Berita Harian reported. 'MACC has identified assets in several countries that were not declared during investigations conducted over the past few years. The next step is to secure restraining orders as part of further legal action,' the source was quoted as saying. MACC's senior director of the special operations division, Zamri Zainul Abidin, confirmed the matter but declined to comment further. Last month, MACC took action on several high-value assets in the UK and Malaysia associated with Daim and his family after receiving 'new information' from overseas. On June 3, MACC froze seven properties and a bank account in London believed to be worth £132 million (RM758.2 million), reportedly linked to Daim's widow, Naimah Khalid, and her family. The commission said its investigation found that the movable and immovable assets were relevant to an offence under the anti-money laundering act. However, on Monday, the Kuala Lumpur High Court stayed an earlier ex parte order to freeze the assets following an application by the former finance minister's widow. Two days later, MACC chief Azam Baki said UK authorities had agreed to enforce a restraining order on assets and properties there that were allegedly linked to Daim's family and associates. MACC has also filed an application in the High Court to forfeit Menara Ilham, a 60-storey tower in Kuala Lumpur linked to Daim.

No seatbelt, no excuse: JPJ to begin enforcement on new express, tour buses with RM300 fines from July 1
KOTA BARU, June 29 – Express and tour bus drivers and passengers must wear seatbelts from July 1, with enforcement initially targeting buses manufactured from January 2020 onwards, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) announced today. JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said older buses will be given time to retrofit seatbelts, while enforcement officers will ensure compliance starting Tuesday. 'Previously, we adopted an advocacy approach, but starting July 1, we will enforce it strictly,' he was quoted saying by New Straits Times. 'If drivers fail to remind passengers to wear their seatbelts, not only will passengers be fined, but the driver and the bus operating company will also be penalised.' He explained that if the driver had given a reminder but passengers still refused to comply, only the passengers would be fined RM300 each. Aedy said JPJ officers would use closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings to determine if reminders were issued before departure. He noted that discussions with bus operators had already taken place and guidelines had been issued to facilitate enforcement. Drivers are responsible for ensuring all passengers fasten their seatbelts before starting the journey. The JPJ chief stressed there would be no compromise on violations moving forward. Calls for stricter laws came after 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students died when a bus carrying 42 passengers veered off the East-West Highway near Gerik on June 9. A total of 48 individuals were involved in the incident, with 13 pronounced dead at the scene and two more succumbing to injuries in hospital. A group of UPSI students involved in the fatal bus crash has since announced its plan to take legal action against the bus driver and the company operating the vehicle.
