IND vs ENG: 'Two best spinners ... ' – Sourav Ganguly slams India's 'surprising' XI call at Edgbaston

NEW DELHI: India's playing XI for the second Test against England in Birmingham on Wednesday has triggered widespread debate. The inclusion of three new faces — Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep — coupled with the resting of pace spearhead
Jasprit Bumrah
and the omission of in-form spinner Kuldeep Yadav, drew sharp criticism from cricketing legends Sourav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, and
Ravi Shastri
.
India's recent Test form has been underwhelming, with just one win in their last nine matches — the team's poorest run in over a decade. The struggles continued with a five-wicket defeat to England in the first Test at Leeds.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly voiced concern over the spin choices.
'I'm not sure whether India are playing their two best spinners,' Ganguly said on Sony Sports.
'England have chosen to field first — that's surprising.
But this could be India's best chance. Put runs on the board and hopefully it works out.'
'I had two great spinners Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the team. I used to stop the run flow on Day 1 of the Test and the two became dangerous as the match went ahead,' he added.
Sunil Gavaskar questioned the exclusion of Kuldeep Yadav, especially considering the pitch conditions.
IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Shubman Gill's statement ton, Jaiswal misses out & Karun Nair at No.3?
'I'm a little baffled that Kuldeep wasn't picked — especially on a surface where everyone says there's a bit more turn,' Gavaskar said.

He also stressed that batting wasn't India's primary issue.
'If your top-order isn't scoring runs, then bringing in Washington at seven or Nitish Reddy at eight won't solve that. Those weren't the batters who failed in the first Test. You scored over 830 runs — not 380 — across two innings. That's plenty,' he added.
According to Gavaskar, the team needed more focus on bowling reinforcements.
'The area that needed strengthening was wicket-taking, not batting.'
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was critical of the decision to rest Bumrah, calling it a misstep in such a crucial match.
'You don't rest your premier fast bowler in a series-defining Test,' he remarked, suggesting that Bumrah should not have had the option to sit out.
With Bumrah rested, India fielded Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar as their spin options in the Birmingham Test.

ENG vs IND 2nd Test Day 2 highlights: Gill, bowlers put India on top

The Indian cricket team, with the help of a marvellous 269 from skipper Shubman Gill, 89 from Ravindra Jadeja and 42 from Washington Sundar, put India in the driver's seat in the match by posting a huge total of 587 on the board. Pacers Akash Deep and Md Siraj then struck early with the ball as the hosts found themselves completely on the back foot by the end of Day 2 of the second Test match at Edgbaston. In the third session, England were finally able to end the Indian innings after 151 overs of struggle but not before being bundled out for 587, thanks to Shubman Gill's brilliant 269. India again lost their last three wickets in a span of 23 runs, but the lower-order fight was much better than what they had put up in quite some time. England will try to add quick runs and avoid losing wickets to end their day on a high. England came out to bat hoping to take advantage of the superior batting surface, but Akash Deep removed Ben Duckett (0) and Ollie Pope (0) on back-to-back deliveries to put India in the lead early. Five overs later, Siraj had Zak Crawley (19) caught in the slips as England found themselves reduced to 25 for 3. However, Joe Root (17*), and Harry Brook (26*) then added an unbeaten 47 runs for the fourth wicket as England finished the day at 72 for 3, still trailing by 515 runs in the first innings. Earlier, in the second session, resuming from 414/7, skipper Shubman Gill led from the front with a sensational knock, converting his maiden Test double century into a monumental 250. In the process, he became only the sixth Indian captain to score a double hundred and the first Asian batter to cross 200 in a Test match in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). He also broke Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record of 254 to register the highest Test score by an Indian captain. Gill found excellent support in Washington Sundar, whose selection had raised eyebrows. Sundar responded in style, anchoring the innings with a composed 42 and playing some crisp shots to help India cross the 500-run mark. The pair counterattacked after a steady start post-lunch, putting England's bowlers under severe pressure. As England lost control, their bowlers began spraying loose deliveries, allowing India to accelerate with ease. Just before tea, Joe Root provided England with a rare breakthrough, dismissing Sundar for 42. But by the time the session ended, India had added 150 more runs to take their total to 564. At the start of the day, resuming from an overnight strong position, India added 109 runs in the first session while losing just one wicket. Captain Shubman Gill continued his rich form, bringing up his maiden Test 150 and becoming only the second Indian skipper after Mohammad Azharuddin to do so. Ravindra Jadeja provided solid support, completing his 23rd Test half-century before falling for 89 while trying to accelerate. The duo added a commanding 200-run stand for the fifth wicket—the second instance of an Indian pair achieving such a partnership at Edgbaston, after Jadeja and Rishabh Pant's 222-run stand in 2022. Despite occasional movement from Chris Woakes and some sharp bouncers from England's pacers, the Indian batters looked untroubled. A brief on-field altercation occurred over Jadeja's movement on the pitch after a shot, but it was quickly defused. ENG vs IND, 2nd Test: Majestic Shubman Gill, pacers hand Bazball its sternest test

By the time stumps were drawn on Day 2 at Edgbaston, England were staring down a mountain, reduced to 74 for 3 and trailing by a yawning 510 runs. India, fuelled by Shubman Gill's masterclass and a disciplined bowling display, left the field with their tails up and the momentum firmly theirs. The morning began where Day 1 had left offâ€'with Gill and Ravindra Jadeja in complete control. The duo extended their sixth-wicket partnership to a daunting 203, grinding down the English attack with composure and precision. Jadeja fell heartbreakingly short of a century, undone by a well-directed bouncer from Josh Tongue, but his 89 was every bit as vital as it was skillful. Gill, though, was in a league of his own. Elegant and unflinching, he stitched together another substantial standâ€'144 runsâ€'with Washington Sundar, who played a perfect supporting act. Gill reached his double hundred in style and then surged past 250, painting a picture of dominance on a pitch that offered little to the bowlers. England finally broke through late in the session when Joe Root bowled Sundar with a sharp off-break, but the damage was done. India's bowlers capped off the day with a fiery burst. Akash Deep struck early, and Mohammed Siraj followed up with two quick blows to leave England reeling. The scoreboard pressure is immense, and with two full days ahead, India have the luxury of dictating terms. A day that belonged to Shubman Gill's India, from start to stumps. Watch: Shubman Gill Blasts Akash Deep For Big Mistake During India vs England 2nd Test: " Dekh Kya Raha Hai?"

The second day of the second India vs England Test in Birmingham belonged to one man - Shubman Gill. The Indian cricket team captain slammed a majestic 269, a knock which will be talked about a lot in future, as he carried a dominant India to 587 in 151 overs of their first innings. It was a statement knock where Gill passed every challenge with his grit and determination to bat for more than eight hours and post the highest score by an Indian batter in Tests in England, as well as for an India captain overall. With his technical excellence in attacking bowlers and being water tight in defence against good balls, Gill left everyone in awe of his knock laced with 30 fours and three sixes. Gill is now the second Test captain to make 200 in England, which is now the seventh highest score for an Indian batter in Tests. Just before Tea on Day 2, Gill wanted to take a quick single but Akash Deep was not quite ready. He was slow to start as Akash Deep as Ollie Pope, at mid on, showed alacrity to dive to his right, and threw the ball towards the keeper. It was not an accurate throw and gave Akash Deep some extra time to get back to his crease. Gill, after reaching the non-striker's end, gave Akash Deep a piece of his mind. "Dekh kya raha hai? Bhaag jaldi se (What are you staring at? Run quickly)" Gill screamed. This was Gill's first outburst at a teammate after becoming India's Test captain. — Nihari Korma (@NihariVsKorma) July 3, 2025 Apart from that, Gill was a picture of calm. At 211/5, a total worth 450 wasn't a practical possibility for India. But Gill stepped up in stunning fashion to hit his career-best knock in Tests and ensure India ended 13 runs away from reaching 600, which is now their fourth highest total in Tests. Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42) gave him solid support in adding partnerships of 203 and 144 for the sixth and seventh wickets with Gill, meaning that the lower-order runs did come for India. For England, who didn't get much help on offer, Shoaib Bashir ended with figures of 3-167, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue took 2-81 and 2-119 respectively.
