'We must get to know Evan and exploit his depth' - Roma boss praises early Ferguson impact

AS Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini has urged his players to avail of Evan Ferguson's strengths after the Irishman made an explosive start to his loan spell with the Serie A giants.
The striker followed up his four-goal blitz on his first outing against UniPomezia by grabbing the solitary strike in Saturday's 1-0 pre-season friendly against Kaiserslautern.
Ferguson (20) displayed his poacher's instincts by forcing defender Maxwell Gyamfi and goalkeeper Julian Krahl into a muddle, allowing him to stroke the ball into an empty net at a packed Fritz-Walter-Stadion in Germany.

Roma face Cannes on Thursday, Lens on Saturday before two further warm-up games await in England next week against Aston Villa (Wednesday) and Everton (Saturday).
The schedule has been devised by new manager Gasperini, geared towards the league opener against Bologna on August 23 at Stadio Olimpico.
Gasperini is rebuilding the team in the same way he sculpted Atalanta into Europa League winners last year.
His loan capture from Brighton and Hove Albion is at the centrepiece of his blueprint, heightening the necessity to utilise his natural traits of athleticism and application.
'Ferguson is a player who presses and can create these chances,' said the 67-year-old veteran boss, offering his impressions so far.
'If you win the ball high up the pitch, you have good chances of scoring. We need to get to know Evan and exploit his depth. In some situations, we could have looked for him more.
'We need to get used to involving the strikers a bit more, but that's something I'll work on during the games.'
As satisfied as Gasperini was with the firepower provided by the Meath man, he's demanded additional resources to bolster his attack.

'It's just the reality, and we can't be hypocrites about this,' he said, connecting with the expectations of fans for a season competing on the domestic and European stage.
"Coaches always want things done, because otherwise, why do we even prepare if half the team leaves? This concerns everyone, but that's how it is.
"I hope that what we have in mind can be achieved. I know it takes more than a month, but I don't know how long because the transfer market never meets the coaches' schedule.
"It would be nice to achieve what I and the club have in mind."

Lara Gillespie makes history by becoming first Irish woman to take podium finish in stage of Tour de France Femmes

Gillespie, riding for UAE Team ADQ, finished third on stage four in Poitiers at the end of a tough stage that saw Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) claim her second sprint victory in as many days ahead of Dutch race leader Marianne Vos of Team Visma-Lease a Bike. The 24-year-old Enniskerry woman's result was all the more impressive given that she was only called up the Tour team a few days before the start, after a crash at the Elmos Dwars doors het Hageland race in mid-June saw her miss the National Road Championships and other races. A crash also hampered Gillespie's chances at the Tour de France Femmes yesterday. Although she didn't fall, the former European track champion was held up by a crash in the last 4km of stage three meaning she didn't get to go toe-to-toe with the fastest women in the world at the finish. Today, though, Gillespie held her own in the gallop to the line despite being out in the wind for longer than the first two on the stage, both of whom are renowned sprinters. Dutchwoman Wiebes' victory was a record fifth Tour de France Femmes stage win and she continues to lead the green-jersey classification, while second-placed Vos maintained her overall lead. "It's nice to keep the yellow on such a day,' said Vos afterwards before praising stage winner Wiebes. 'You know it's going to be tough. Not only in the final, but actually from the start it was fast and constantly windy, with a high pace in the bunch and then you have to stay in the front and stay in a good position. "That's pretty tough and thanks to the team it worked really well, so I'm very happy. She's [Lorena Wiebes] just the best sprinter in the world, she's a phenomenon in the sprint and every time she shows it again. She's very, very hard to beat. She's a tough competitor, but it's good to have her." As well as Gillespie, current national champion Mia Griffin and last year's title holder Fiona Mangan are also making their debuts at the race with all three looking to first complete the nine-day race, and hopefully build on the experience going forward. Tomorrow's fifth stage takes the riders from Chasseneuil-du-Poitou to Gueret, a distance of 165.8 km (103 miles).

Shelbourne not lacking motivation for return Champions League tie against Qarabag

Champions League second qualifying round, second leg, Qarabag (3) v Shelbourne (0), Wednesday, 5pm Irish time, Live on Solid Sport stream Shelbourne manager Joey O'Brien and his ever-evolving squad know that an expected defeat to Qarabag merely changes the course of this European adventure. The true value of overcoming Linfield in the Champions League first-round qualifier earlier this month is that it provides an opportunity to end up in the Uefa Conference League group stages. If the Azerbaijani champions finish the job, Shels will be rerouted to the Europa League and a third-round qualifier against the losers of Rijeka of Croatia and Bulgaria's Ludogorets. If the Europa League standard also proves too much, they drop into a season-defining playoff to reach the Conference League with at least €3 million in Uefa prize money on offer. READ MORE Last season, Shamrock Rovers earned €6.4 million from their European run. Trailing Qarabag 3-0, despite a competitive first leg at Tolka Park, the jet-lagged visitors might forgive themselves for lacking enough motivation to avoid a thumping in Baku. 'Motivation? You are playing Champions League round two, away from home, against a team that has made the group stages for the last 10, 11 years,' said O'Brien. 'This is the level the lads want to play at. This is what you dream of as a kid, coming away and playing in Europe. None of them are hiding.' JJ Lunney echoed his manager despite having to cope with the head-spinning play of Brazilian midfielders Kady Borges and Pedro Bicalho. 'Just the speed of the game,' said Lunney of the first leg. 'How quick your brain thinks, they close you down so fast. In the last five minutes, you think you are having a good game, you take a half-yard touch too big and they take it. There is learning in that. You cannot switch off for one second. But there are massive games to come.' Despite a turbulent period off the pitch, the Shelbourne investors have refused to stand still, signing three young players to multiyear deals in the past week while adding Dutch goalkeeper Wessel Speel on loan to cover for the injured Conor Kearns. Speel could start in Baku, but French defender Milan Mbeng and Ireland under-21 winger Seán Moore are not registered for this round, while Jack Henry-Francis, who arrived from Arsenal, is injured. 'They are three great young players who add quality to the group,' said O'Brien. 'The strength of the squad we already have is one of the reasons I took the job.' That is the closest O'Brien will come to mentioning his former boss, Damien Duff, who resigned on June 22nd before the crowning achievement of guiding Shelbourne into the Champions League after 3½ years of steady progress. This Thursday, RTÉ One broadcasts the first episode of Football Families, a three-part documentary about Shelbourne. Naturally, the previous manager features, which is a stark reminder that the Duff era is behind the Drumcondra club. With St Patrick's Athletic away in the FAI Cup on August 15th and at least four more European nights next month, there is still plenty to look forward to.

Joao Felix departs Chelsea and joins Ronaldo at Al Nassr

PORTUGUESE FORWARD JOAO Felix has signed a two-year deal with Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, where he will join Cristiano Ronaldo, the club announced Tuesday. Al Nassr have paid Chelsea a fee worth a reported €50.5 million (£43.7m) to secure Felix's services. Felix, now 25, made a blockbuster move from Benfica to Atletico Madrid in 2019, but has since seen his fortunes decline. 'I'm here to spread joy. Let's win together,' said Felix in a video posted on the Riyadh club's X account. A separate post said he had signed until 2027. Advertisement Felix remains one of the most expensive transfers in history, following his move to Atletico for €127.7m six years ago. He has since failed to score more than 10 goals a season, despite stints at Barcelona, AC Milan and Chelsea. According to Arryadia, a Riyadh sports newspaper, Felix will earn €8.7m a year. Saudi Arabia has shaken up football by spending heavily on stars from Europe, starting with Ronaldo's arrival in 2023, and the conservative desert nation will host the World Cup in 2034. Many of the signings have been ageing stars, but Felix bucks the trend along with Mateo Retegui, 26, the Serie A top-scorer who joined Al Qadsiah last week. French international Theo Hernandez, 27, left AC Milan for Al Hilal in a reported €25m deal earlier this month. Top coaches have also been lured to Saudi Arabia, including Italy's Simone Inzaghi who led Al Hilal to an upset win over Manchester City at the Club World Cup. At Al Nassr, Felix will be working under Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, who was sacked by Al Hilal in May following their defeat in the Asian Champions League semi-finals. – © AFP 2025
