Norwegian athletics coach Ingebrigtsen avoids jail in high-profile family case
OSLO - A Norwegian court on Monday found athletics coach Gjert Ingebrigtsen guilty of one count of minor assault against his daughter, while acquitting him of all charges of physical and mental abuse against his twice Olympic champion son Jakob.
Ingebrigtsen was sentenced to a 15-day suspended prison sentence and must pay compensation of 10,000 Norwegian crowns ($1,000) to his daughter for hitting her with a wet towel on one occasion. He will not have to serve time in jail.
Prosecutors had sought a prison sentence of two-and-a-half years in a trial that captivated the Nordic nation.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who won gold medals in the 5,000 metres at the 2024 Paris Games and the 1,500 metres in Tokyo in 2021, described during the trial in March a childhood he said was marked by fear and manipulation, accusing his father of incidents of violence.
Gjert Ingebrigtsen, 59, had pleaded not guilty in the case and denied the charges against him, telling the court he had been an overly protective father who had tried to help his ambitious children.
Gjert Ingebrigtsen will not file an appeal, his lawyer John Christian Elden told Reuters.
"He is relieved and hopes the matter will be resolved quickly," Elden said.
Reuters was not able to reach a lawyer representing Jakob Ingebrigtsen and his sister.
The Ingebrigtsen family became household names in 2016 when the TV show "Team Ingebrigtsen" aired for five seasons on national broadcaster NRK, showcasing the family training and balancing their ambitions with daily life.
A long list of witnesses was called to testify at the nearly two-month long criminal trial, including many family members, officials from Norway's athletics federation and other athletes and staff who worked with Gjert Ingebrigtsen and his sons.
The verdict remains subject to potential appeal by prosecutors. REUTERS

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan - An explosive-laden car rammed into a Pakistani military convoy on Saturday in a town near the Afghan border, killing at least 13 soldiers, sources said. Pakistani Taliban also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella group of several Islamist militant groups, has long been waging a war against Pakistan in a bid to overthrow the government and replace it with its own Islamic system of governance. UK distances new spy chief from 'Nazi' grandfather

PHOTOS: MI6, REUTERS LONDON - The British government has distanced the incoming head of its foreign intelligence service from her grandfather following reports he was a Nazi spy known as 'the butcher'. Ms Blaise Metreweli will in the autumn become the first woman to lead MI6 in its 116-year-old history, the British government announced earlier this month. The Daily Mail newspaper reported this week that her grandfather Constantine Dobrowolski defected from the Soviet Union's Red Army to become a Nazi informant in the Chernigiv region of modern-day Ukraine. The newspaper said German archives showed Dobrowolski was known as 'the Butcher' or 'Agent No 30' by Wehrmacht commanders. 'Blaise Metreweli neither knew nor met her paternal grandfather,' a Foreign Office spokesperson said in a statement. 'Blaise's ancestry is characterised by conflict and division and, as is the case for many with eastern European heritage, only partially understood. 'It is precisely this complex heritage which has contributed to her commitment to prevent conflict and protect the British public from modern threats from today's hostile states, as the next chief of MI6.' The Daily Mail said Mr Dobrowolski had a 50,000 ruble bounty placed on him by Soviet leaders, and was dubbed the 'worst enemy of the Ukrainian people'. He also sent letters to superiors saying he 'personally' took part 'in the extermination of the Jews', the newspaper added. The head of MI6 is the only publicly named member of the organisation and reports directly to the foreign minister. Ms Metreweli, 47, will be the 18th head of MI6. Like her predecessors she will be referred to as 'C', not 'M' as the chief is called in the James Bond film franchise. Jayasuriya decimates Bangladesh as Sri Lanka win by innings and 78 runs
Spinner Prabath Jayasuriya led the charge with a five-wicket haul as Bangladesh collapsed for just 133 in their second innings, handing Sri Lanka a win by an innings and 78 runs, with the hosts clinching a 1-0 victory in their two-test series on Saturday. Bangladesh lost six wickets within 33 runs as their batters were unable to repeat the heroics that secured a draw in the first test in Galle on Colombo's spin-friendly track. "There was a difference between (the) two matches ... that's a good morale booster for us, losing the toss and putting the opposition under pressure," Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva said at the post-match presentation ceremony. After Bangladesh posted 247 in their first innings, opener Pathum Nissanka scored 158 in a player-of-the-match performance, aided by Dinesh Chandimal (93) and Kusal Mendis (84) as Sri Lanka secured a commanding 211-run lead with a total of 458.
