A Belgian woman's search of her lost roots in India
During an interaction with press here on Thursday, Anjali Pawar, Director of Adoptee Rights Council, representing Ms. Leruitte, said to trace origin of Ms. Leruitte, suspected to be a victim of an international adoption racket, they perused her adoption documents and certificates which approved her adoption to a couple in Belgium in around 1994.
'According to official paperwork from her adoption, Ms. Leruitte was born in 1992 and arrived at the Malaysian Social Service institution in 1993. As per the records, her mother's name was Sakunthala and the address was Konar Street, Palayam Village, Madurai,' she added.
Though Ms. Pawar's team went in search of her mother or person who could identify Ms. Leruitte's mother in several areas, all their efforts went in vain, as they did not find anyone who could identify either the mother or the child.
'One major reason for that is that the address provided in the adoption documents was not correct. If the child was trafficked from another area or district, and the address was wrongly recorded,' she noted.
She said despite extensive efforts, they had been unable to locate the address or verify its existence, which fuelled suspicion about the authenticity of the documents.
A major scandal that broke out in 2005 in connection with the Malaysian Social Service compounded their doubts about the illegality of the adoption.
'An investigation into the adoption racket of the Malaysian Social Service revealed that several children sent abroad for adoption through the organisation had been kidnapped. Also, in many cases, the paper works were fabricated to facilitate illegal adoptions,' Ms. Pawar recalled.
Further, on reading the inconsistencies in Ms. Leruitte's (then Aruna) records, she suspected that there was a strong possibility that she was one of those kidnapped children, taken from her family with consent, when she was one and a half years old, in 1993.
She stressed that a girl's pursuit in search for her parents was not just a historical issue, but a human story of potential loss, identity and reunion.
Though it was a tough task for Ms. Leruitte to embark on an emotional journey to find her roots, it was her fundamental right to know her roots and her biological parents, she said.
Ms. Leruitte, who works as a secretary in a garage and leads a very ordinary life along with her father and brother, adopted from Bengaluru, said she was desperate to know about her past and where her life began.
Ms. Pawar and Bimala Chandrasekar, Director of EKTA Resource Centre for Women, who are into finding the lost family, welcomed any hint or information about the family or the origin of Ms. Leruitee.
Also, anyone in search of their children who went missing around 1992 at approximately at the age of one and a half years, could contact them through anjalipawar575@gmail.com or 9822206485 and 7639353494.
They also said the informants' identity would be kept confidential.

Koregaon Bhima violence: Sharad Pawar seeks six weeks time to reply on Ambedkar's application
Senior politician and NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar recently sought six weeks from the Koregaon Bhima Commission of Inquiry for replying to an application filed by Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar in connection with a letter that he had given to former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in January 2020. In his application before the commission filed in February this year, Ambedkar claimed that on January 24, 2020, Sharad Pawar had given a letter to then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray stating that the violence that broke out in Koregaon Bhima was a conspiracy hatched by the previous government under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis. Along with his application, Ambedkar had attached a news report, which stated that Pawar's letter to Uddhav Thackeray demanded the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the Koregaon-Bhima violence and accused the Fadnavis government of protecting the conspirators. Ambedkar had requested the commission to pass an order asking Pawar to submit a copy of this letter that he had given to Uddhav Thackeray, along with related documents. Ambedkar had also requested the commission that if required, Pawar should be called again to depose as a witness. On April 23 this year, advocate Kiran Kadam, on behalf of Ambedkar, filed an application at the Commission, with a request to issue a notice to Pawar for producing the documents related to the letter. The commission had then twice sent a letter to Pawar, requesting him to submit the 'documents in question', either personally or through his attorney. When contacted, V V Palnitkar, commission's secretary, confirmed that on July 24, Pawar had through his lawyer sought six weeks time to file his reply in this matter. Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hiray had opposed Ambedkar's application to call Pawar again for deposing as a witness. Hiray had claimed this was an attempt (by Ambedkar) to create 'sensationalisation' for political purposes and delay the commission's work. Hiray stated that Sharad Pawar had deposed before the Commission in Mumbai on May 5, 2022, and was examined by different lawyers. Hiray also said that Pawar had himself never mentioned about a letter that was sent to Uddhav Thackeray — as claimed by Ambedkar — before the commission. Meanwhile, the state government has granted yet another extension to the Commission till October 31 this year. An order in this regard was passed by Chetan Nikam, deputy secretary, state home department, on July 30. This is the 19th extension given to the two member commission led by retired high court justice J N Patel. The commission was formed for probing the Koregaon Bhima violence of January 1, 2018, in which one person died and several others were injured. The Commission's tenure had to be repeatedly extended to allow it to complete its work. The commission would now conduct its hearings in Pune around August 25. Section 144 imposed in Pune's Yavat village after tension erupts over social media post
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said that Section 144 had been imposed for 48 hours following a tense situation in Yavat village at Daund Taluka of Pune District after a youth posted an alleged objectionable social media post. The Deputy CM, Ajit Pawar, arrived at the site to meet the affected people, said that the situation was now under control and appealed for calm. Speaking to the media persons, Ajit Pawar said, "After today's incident, Section 144 has been imposed in the area for 48 hours. The situation is under control, and there is no need to panic." He urged all citizens, regardless of caste or religion, to maintain peace and harmony and not fall for rumours. The deputy CM revealed that the tension began after someone posted a WhatsApp status referencing a recent incident in Madhya Pradesh. This status led to tension and minor vandalism in the area. "A few days ago, an incident occurred, followed by speeches from various representatives. Everything had calmed down afterwards. Recently, an incident took place in Madhya Pradesh. In connection with that, someone posted a WhatsApp status, which caused a bit of unrest," he added. He reassured citizens by stating that senior police officers and a team from the SRPF were already deployed in the area to ensure law and order. "I also want to clarify that the person who posted that status has no direct connection to this place. He had come here from Nanded several years ago. Due to that post, some tension arose, and there was some vandalism. But the police are doing their job and conducting investigations and panchanamas," Pawar added. "The police are working to maintain peace, and I appeal to the villagers to cooperate. The entire situation is under control. I urge everyone to trust the police and not believe in rumors. There is absolutely no atmosphere of fear. The situation is completely under control," he later said. Earlier, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperation after tensions flared up. A heavy deployment of Police personnel was made in the area. Police said that the incident occurred in the village a week ago, so the situation was already tense.
