Pak likely to miss Olympics berth
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finalised the qualification pathway for cricket at the Olympics 2028, and early indications suggest Pakistan is unlikely to secure a place in the men's event, British media reported on Wednesday.
According to a report, the ICC, following discussions during its annual general meeting in Singapore, has opted for a regional qualification format to determine the participating teams.
The men's cricket competition at LA 2028 will feature six teams, one of which is automatically reserved for hosts, the United States.
Under the proposed model, the highest-ranked team from each continent will qualify, ensuring representation from all regions.
This means India is expected to claim Asia's spot, while Australia (Oceania), South Africa (Africa) and Great Britain (Europe) will also qualify automatically. With these allocations, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand will miss out on direct qualification.
Pakistan and New Zealand are unhappy with the ICC's decision, but while it has yet to be ratified by the board it is unlikely to be reversed.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also pushed for the regional qualification system to ensure global representation and promote cricket's international appeal.
This format however leave just one spot open after India, Australia, South Africa, Great Britain and the USA have confirmed their places.
The ICC will decide how the sixth and final berth will be awarded. There is speculation that it could go to a representative team from the Caribbean Islands, similar to the arrangement during the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where Barbados represented the region.
The men's and women's cricket tournaments at LA 2028 will be played in the T20 format.
The ICC has already confirmed that both competitions will run from July 12 to July 29, 2028, with the women's medal match scheduled for July 20 and the men's final on July 29. ICC

The Pakistan team was in action during a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. Photo: AFP Pakistan are all set to take on West Indies in the eighth bilateral T20I series between the two teams after they first faced each other in April 2011 in the T20 format. The three T20Is, beginning on Thursday, 31 July (1 August, 5am Pakistan time) at the Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium in Florida is the first meeting between the two teams in T20Is since December 2021. The second and third T20I are scheduled to take place on 2 and 3 August at the same venue with the first ball slated to be bowled at 8pm local time (3 and 4 August, 5am Pakistan time). Pakistan will take the field in Lauderhill, a venue that has played host to 12 ODIs and 17 T20Is since May 2010, for the second time after beating Ireland by three wickets in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Overall Pakistan have won 15 of the 21 T20Is played between the two teams with hosts winning three and as many ending in no result. Both the teams will be looking to make amends to their recent most T20I series results after visitors conceded 2-1 to Bangladesh and hosts 5-0 to Australia. Pakistan arrived in Lauderhill on Monday, 28 July and took part in two intensive training sessions. Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Shah Afridi have returned to the T20I squad. Pakistan T20I captain, Salman Ali Agha: "We are really looking forward to playing at this wonderful venue and our time here so far has been exciting. I feel the three T20Is will also be entertaining and as a team we are eagerly looking forward to take the field. "We have a fine blend of youth and experience in our squad and it is highly productive that we are going into yet another T20I series as the build-up towards the T20 World Cup picks up pace. "The West Indies are a formidable T20I side despite the results not going their way recently and I feel we'll have to play our best possible game in order to outfox them in this series." Pakistan T20I squad: Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Haris (wicket-keeper), Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan (wicket-keeper), Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Sufyan Moqim. Meanwhile, The West Indies squad is expected to feature one change from the side that played in the recently concluded five-match T20I series against Australia, which they lost 5-0. Veteran all-rounder Andre Russell announced his retirement after playing two matches in the shorter format against Australia, with right-handed batter Keacy Carty set to replace him. West Indies squad for Pakistan T20Is: Brandon King, Evan Lewis, Keacy Carty, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Romario Shepherd, Roston Chase, Jewel Andrew, Shai Hope (C), Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Jediah Blades, Matthew Forde The head-to-head record between the two teams heavily favours Pakistan. Out of 21 T20I encounters, Pakistan have won 15 matches, while West Indies have secured just three victories. The remaining three matches ended without a result. This marks Pakistan's third consecutive T20I series, following a 3-0 home series win over Bangladesh in May and a 2-1 series defeat against the same opposition in Bangladesh. Series schedule: 31 July – First T20I; 2 Aug – Second T20I; 3 Aug – Third T20I; 8 Aug – First ODI; 10 Aug – Second ODI; 12 Aug – Third ODI.

Swiatek cruises, Osaka battles through
Iga Swiatek was in action against China's Guo Hanyu at the WTA Canadian Open. Photo: AFP Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek cruised into the third round of the WTA Canadian Open on Wednesday as Naomi Osaka fought off two match points to advance with a three-set win over Liudmila Samsonova. Swiatek, seeded second in her first tournament since her crushing victory over Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon final, breezed past Chinese qualifier Guo Hanyu 6-3, 6-1, breaking Guo's serve six times. Her untroubled tournament opener followed Osaka's battling victory over Samsonova. The four-time Grand Slam champion from Japan saved back-to-back match points in the 10th game of the second set, and trailed 5-2 in the second-set tiebreaker on the way to a 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 triumph. Osaka, now working with Tomasz Wiktorowski after announcing on Monday she had split with coach Patrick Mouratoglou, notched her first win over a top-20 player since she beat Karolina Muchova at the Australian Open. But she had to dig deep for the win after surrendering early breaks in each of the first two sets. Wimbledon quarter-finalist Samsonova served for the match at 5-4 in the second and led 40-15. The Russian fired a forehand long on her first match point and on her second a lackluster drop shot effort gave Osaka an opening and the Japanese star pounced. Samsonova's double fault on break point allowed Osaka to level the set, and after storming back in the tiebreaker to force a third set Osaka took control early, breaking Samsonova twice on the way to a 4-1 lead. "She definitely came out really hard and, for me, I was definitely overwhelmed and I didn't know if I should also be hitting winners," Osaka said. "But after a while I just tried to keep the ball in court," added Osaka, who snapped a four-match losing streak in three-setters. Osaka next faces Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko, who beat Mexico's Renata Zarazua 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Australian Open champion Madison Keys, the sixth seed, opened her Canadian campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Laura Siegemund, avenging a third-round loss to the German at Wimbledon. Raducanu reaches third round British number one Emma Raducanu continued her impressive build-up to the US Open with a commanding straight-sets victory over American Peyton Stearns, winning 6-2, 6-4 to book her place in the third round of the Canadian Open at Court Rogers on Wednesday. The 22-year-old, currently ranked World number 33, produced a strong all-round performance to extend her perfect record against Stearns, securing her third win in as many meetings between the pair. Raducanu now sets up a mouth-watering clash with Wimbledon runner up Amanda Anisimova, who overcame New Zealand's Lulu Sun 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) earlier in the day. Raducanu started the match in commanding fashion, taking charge of the opening set by breaking Stearns twice before sealing the set on her sixth set point. The Briton displayed precise shot-making and composure from the baseline, frustrating her opponent with deep returns and clever variation. The second set offered more drama as Raducanu found herself trailing 4-2 after conceding a break. However, she responded brilliantly, reeling off four consecutive games with aggressive returns and confident service games to close out the contest in one hour and 35 minutes. Reflecting on her performance, Raducanu admitted she briefly lost focus but was pleased to regain control. "I'm really happy with how I came through in that match. I kind of lost my focus at some moments in the second set and she took advantage, but I'm very happy that I came through against a top opponent and happy to extend my stay in Montreal," Raducanu said. Acknowledging the home support, Raducanu added, "I saw the Union Jack in clutch moments and I was actually born in Canada, so to me, it means so much to do well here."
