Pak likely to miss Olympics berth
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finalised the qualification pathway for cricket at the Olympics 2028, and early indications suggest Pakistan is unlikely to secure a place in the men's event, British media reported on Wednesday.
According to a report, the ICC, following discussions during its annual general meeting in Singapore, has opted for a regional qualification format to determine the participating teams.
The men's cricket competition at LA 2028 will feature six teams, one of which is automatically reserved for hosts, the United States.
Under the proposed model, the highest-ranked team from each continent will qualify, ensuring representation from all regions.
This means India is expected to claim Asia's spot, while Australia (Oceania), South Africa (Africa) and Great Britain (Europe) will also qualify automatically. With these allocations, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand will miss out on direct qualification.
Pakistan and New Zealand are unhappy with the ICC's decision, but while it has yet to be ratified by the board it is unlikely to be reversed.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also pushed for the regional qualification system to ensure global representation and promote cricket's international appeal.
This format however leave just one spot open after India, Australia, South Africa, Great Britain and the USA have confirmed their places.
The ICC will decide how the sixth and final berth will be awarded. There is speculation that it could go to a representative team from the Caribbean Islands, similar to the arrangement during the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where Barbados represented the region.
The men's and women's cricket tournaments at LA 2028 will be played in the T20 format.
The ICC has already confirmed that both competitions will run from July 12 to July 29, 2028, with the women's medal match scheduled for July 20 and the men's final on July 29. ICC

Photo: AFP Pakistan are all set to take on West Indies in the eighth bilateral T20I series between the two teams after they first faced each other in April 2011 in the T20 format. The three T20Is, beginning on Thursday, 31 July (1 August, 5am Pakistan time) at the Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium in Florida is the first meeting between the two teams in T20Is since December 2021. The second and third T20I are scheduled to take place on 2 and 3 August at the same venue with the first ball slated to be bowled at 8pm local time (3 and 4 August, 5am Pakistan time). Pakistan will take the field in Lauderhill, a venue that has played host to 12 ODIs and 17 T20Is since May 2010, for the second time after beating Ireland by three wickets in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Overall Pakistan have won 15 of the 21 T20Is played between the two teams with hosts winning three and as many ending in no result. Both the teams will be looking to make amends to their recent most T20I series results after visitors conceded 2-1 to Bangladesh and hosts 5-0 to Australia. Pakistan arrived in Lauderhill on Monday, 28 July and took part in two intensive training sessions. Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Shah Afridi have returned to the T20I squad. Swiatek, seeded second in her first tournament since her crushing victory over Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon final, breezed past Chinese qualifier Guo Hanyu 6-3, 6-1, breaking Guo's serve six times. Her untroubled tournament opener followed Osaka's battling victory over Samsonova. The four-time Grand Slam champion from Japan saved back-to-back match points in the 10th game of the second set, and trailed 5-2 in the second-set tiebreaker on the way to a 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 triumph. The second set offered more drama as Raducanu found herself trailing 4-2 after conceding a break. However, she responded brilliantly, reeling off four consecutive games with aggressive returns and confident service games to close out the contest in one hour and 35 minutes. Reflecting on her performance, Raducanu admitted she briefly lost focus but was pleased to regain control. "I'm really happy with how I came through in that match. I kind of lost my focus at some moments in the second set and she took advantage, but I'm very happy that I came through against a top opponent and happy to extend my stay in Montreal," Raducanu said. Women's T20 WC Qualifier host revealed

Photo: ICC The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday confirmed that Nepal will host the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 Qualifier, which is scheduled to take place from 12 January to 16 February 2026. This global qualifier will see ten teams battling for the four remaining spots at the 10th edition of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, set to be held in England and Wales from 12 June to 5 July 2026. The main tournament will feature 33 matches over 24 days across seven venues, including iconic grounds such as Old Trafford, Headingley, Hampshire Bowl, and Bristol County Ground, with the final to be played at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground. As for the Qualifier in Nepal, the ten participating teams will be split into two groups of five, followed by a Super Six stage and a Final. The full match schedule will be revealed in due course. Bangladesh and Ireland have already booked their spots in the Qualifier based on their participation in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024. Nepal and Thailand qualified via the Asia regional pathway, while the USA earned their place through the Americas region. The remaining five teams will be decided through upcoming regional qualifiers, with two spots each for Africa and Europe, and one for the East Asia-Pacific region. Meanwhile, the ICC on June 18 unveiled groupings and venues for the 2026 main event in England and Wales: Group A will include defending champions Australia, 2024 runners-up South Africa, India, Pakistan, and two teams from the global Qualifier. Group B features hosts England, 2020 champions New Zealand, Sri Lanka, former champions West Indies, and two Qualifier teams. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, scheduled for 30 June and 2 July at The Oval, followed by the final on 5 July at Lord's.
