Anurag Kashyap compares Dhadak 2 to Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt films: ‘What mainstream cinema was meant to be'

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has compared Shazia Iqbal's Dhadak 2 to films by Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, K A Abbas, B R Chopra, and Yash Chopra. Taking to Instagram on Saturday, Anurag penned a long note praising the film's lead actors, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri. He said that this is "what mainstream cinema was meant to be." Anurag Kashyap has only good things to say about Dhadak 2. Anurag Kashyap showers praises on Dhadak 2 Anurag shared a bunch of posters and pictures from Dhadak 2. He lauded Shazia for "holding a mirror to us of what India really is". "In what is the most searing mainstream debut that I have seen in a very, very long time, @shaz.3.0 holds a mirror to us of what India really is outside of our bubble that we live in. Aided by terrific performances from @tripti_dimri, @siddhantchaturvedi, @saurabhsachdeva77 @saadcasm_ @priyanktiwarii, @itsharishkhanna, @manjiripupala @ and writing with #badwelkar, brilliantly shot by @sylvesterfonseca," he said. Anurag compares Dhadak 2 with Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt films He added that filmmakers have forgotten to make "mainstream films of social relevance" nowadays. "The film captures the conversation that we avoid on a day-to-day basis. This is what mainstream cinema was meant to be, and this is what great filmmakers like Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, K A Abbas, B R Chopra, Yash Chopra, and so many used to do. We forgot to make mainstream films of social relevance. They got relegated to independent art house cinema. This is what Tamizh cinema and so much of cinema from south still does," Anurag continued. Anurag says Dhadak 2 is 'a punch in the gut' Dhadak 2 follows Nilesh, a Dalit law student who falls in love with his classmate Vidhi, who hails from an upper-caste household, and the humiliation and tribulations he faces from her family. The film has been lauded for being one of the rare Bollywood mainstream romances to tackle casteism and classism in India. Anurag called Dhadak 2 an "extremely brave and powerful film". "A mainstream adaptation of Periyarum Perumal, without losing the essence of it, Dhadak 2 is a punch in the gut. My driver, who went with me, wept at the end of it and hasn't stopped talking since. An extremely brave and powerful film from @dharmamovies. See it for yourself. I won't say much. Congratulations to the whole team. @prashant316 @animeshpanwar @sanyukta_mohta and others that I don't know. Well done, team. @somenmishra @karanjohar," concluded his note. About Dhadak 2 Dhadak 2, which hit the theatres on August 1, is a story that explores love and challenges social norms. The film follows Siddhant's character as he navigates a love story that breaks through societal expectations and class barriers. It's a spiritual sequel to the 2018 hit, which starred Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter. Dhadak was the Hindi remake of the Marathi film Sairat.

Double win for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani at National Awards: Tota Roy Chowdhury reacts to the honour

Karan Johar 's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani bagged the award for best popular film for wholesome entertainment at the 71st National Film Awards. Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh play the protagonists in the film, but it was Tollywood actors Churni Ganguly and Tota Roy Chowdhury who emerged as the true show-stealers. Tota, who portrayed Alia's father and the Kathak dancer Chondon, received widespread acclaim across the country for his performance. The actor, expressing his happiness at the film's prestigious win, said, 'I am truly happy for Karan sir, for the immense hard work he put into this film — and this prestigious award is a recognition of that. After a gap of seven years, Karan sir began working on it during the first wave of the pandemic, and even through the second wave, he never gave up. From managing social distancing on set, employing monitors, regular testing, to ensuring sanitisation protocols — every step was carefully executed. And the result is a film that came out a winner. I messaged Karan sir after I got the news, and instead, he congratulated me, saying — 'You played your role with such grace.' While it is Karan sir's film, he always makes sure that every actor, big or small, shines. For him, it's their contribution that matters more than his own.' He added, 'The award for Best Choreography also went to Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani for the vibrant number Dhindhora Baje Re , choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant. So, it's a double bonanza for the film.'

From 'Saiyaara', 'Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan' to 'Dhadak 2': Internet spots striking similarities in film posters, calls out 'copy-paste' trend

Ardent Bollywood fans, known for their sharp observational skills, are now turning their attention to movie posters. Social media is abuzz with users increasingly highlighting the striking visual similarities between recent Hindi film releases. From the posters of National Award winners Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor 's 'Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan', to Siddhanth Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri's 'Dhadak 2', and Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's 'Saiyaara', fans are pointing out a concerning "copy-paste" trend in Bollywood's marketing. Here's a closer look at it Netizens react to the posters Netizens took to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram to share the side-by-side comparisons, criticizing what they call a "copy-paste" trend in Bollywood poster design, which includes everything from the framing of romantic leads where they stick their foreheads together to nearly identical backdrops and poses. Reddit was quick to comment after a user shared the posters for Bollywood's most recent slate of films, which looked similar. A poster of 'Satyaprem Ki Katha' by Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani was shared on the internet, and it was compared to a 'Saiyaara' poster. "Saiyara is also very close to this," the netizen wrote. The color scheme is too similar. Another compares it to Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. "I mean, how much innovation do you want for romantic films? There will only be a select few poses," another person stated. A fan joked, "Everyone is doing this in their shadi pics too!" Internet calls for originality The discussion saw some fans advocating for designers to re-embrace originality and creative risk-taking in visual marketing. They argued that the repetitive aesthetics stifle creativity and make new releases indistinguishable. On the other hand, some defended the aesthetic overlap, suggesting it's merely a common stylistic choice prevalent within the industry, particularly for films within the same genre. Box office performances of the films under radar The films whose posters sparked this debate have seen varied success at the box office. 'Saiyaara', a YRF production, has been a commercial success, buoyed by its popular cast, catchy songs, and compelling storytelling. The movie has garnered over Rs 300 crore globally, making it one of 2025's most successful projects. 'Dhadak 2', starring Siddhanth Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, however, had a slow start. It struggled to attract a devoted fanbase, especially when compared to Ajay Devgn's 'Son of Sardaar 2' franchise. 'Son of Sardaar 2' significantly outperformed 'Dhadak 2' on its opening day, earning an impressive Rs 6.75 crore against 'Dhadak 2's Rs 3.35 crore. Similarly, 'Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan', featuring Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor, also had a modest theatrical run. Despite an opening of Rs 1.61 crore, the film did not manage to perform well at the box office overall.
