Lions gutted as Answerth suffers season-ending injury
Answerth fell in a heap after attempting to push off his left leg during the second quarter of the Lions' 15.13 (103) to 9.12 (66) win over Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night.
The 25-year-old was helped off the field by trainers, leaving club officials immediately fearing the worst.
"It's a bad injury. I think he's ruptured his Achilles," Brisbane coach Chris Fagan said.
"I'm no medical expert, but I think they're sort of about a nine-month recovery from surgery.
"It's such a pity because he was playing very well, a terrific game."
Answerth previously missed the back half of 2020 and entire 2021 season with persistent groin issues, but was a regular in the 2024 premiership side.
He had featured in every game this year for the second-placed Lions, who looked primed for another flag push.

Fagan described Answerth as one of the more popular members of the Lions' team.
"He's the ultimate team player and we're all very disappointed for him," Fagan said.
"He was a really important part of our premiership team last year and he's just one of those blokes who will do anything for you.
"So we'll all be a bit flat about that. We'll have to move on of course, because that's footy and these things happen.
"But Noah's just one of those blokes who's a little bit unlucky with injury."
Answerth joins fellow defender Jack Payne and small forward Lincoln McCarthy (both knee) on the long-term injury list.

Detroit Lions offensive line is a work in progress a year after being among NFL's best
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions had one of the NFL's best offensive lines last season. This year is more of a work in progress. Center Frank Ragnow's retirement and the loss of right guard Kevin Zeitler in free agency have opened up competition for at least two new starters. Graham Glasgow, who started at left guard last season and has experience at center, along with rookie Tate Ratledge are getting reps at center through four days of training camp. And then there's the banged-up veteran Taylor Decker at left tackle. 'It's been great. Tate, I thought, was doing a good job. Graham was in there today and I've been comfortable with Graham for quite some time,'' Lions quarterback Jared Goff said on Thursday. 'Whoever it ends up being I'll be good with.'' After Ratledge saw the bulk of center reps the first three days of camp, Glasgow took the center snaps Thursday. Ratledge played only guard at Georgia except for a few practice snaps at center. So he's adjusting to the NFL game and to playing a new position. 'I think just the speed of everything happening. At guard you have a little bit of a delay being off the ball and then, of course, you get up here and you're going against quicker guys,'' Ratledge said. He has no preference for guard or center. 'I enjoy football, it doesn't matter where I am on the field,'' said Ratledge, a second-round pick who sports a John Wayne tattoo on his left bicep. Coach Dan Campbell said earlier in the week that he will keep his eye on the offensive line. '(Ratledge is) getting it all at once. It's everything, it is. It's the mental and it's the technique of it. So, yeah, look we're putting a lot on him,'' Campbell said. 'He's drinking out of a fire hose right now. But there are things that we saw with him in college at Georgia that we felt like, 'You know what? We think this guy can play center.'' Decker remains sidelined while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, but is expected to join the team after the Hall of Fame game on July 31. He's been on the sidelines at camp daily. 'The standard is the standard. We're expected to be one of the top offensive lines in the league,'' Decker said. 'You lose big pieces, but we've put those expectations on ourselves and put ourselves in a position where we're expected to perform a certain way and it doesn't matter.'' Pro Bowl right tackle Penei Sewell is healthy and practicing daily. Christian Mahogany has been a sort of utility lineman for the Lions the past couple of years. He played in seven games in 2024 and started two, including a playoff game. Kayode Awosika, who started 11 games at guard in 2024, will also contend for a starting guard spot. NOTES: Lions LB Alex Anzalone, who has not participated in camp, was on the sidelines again Thursday in street clothes. He told reporters earlier in the week that he is disappointed the Lions have not signed him to a contract extension. INJURIES: LB Derrick Barnes (hand) and CB Terrion Arnold (leg) left practice early to be evaluated further for their injuries. … CB Ennis Rakestraw (chest) was working on the sidelines but has not practiced since he was injured on Sunday. He's expected to return within days.

AFL world erupts over detail in post-match scenes involving Sam Docherty
The AFL world is showering Kade Simpson with praise after a stunning gesture for Sam Docherty after the Carlton veteran's farewell game. The Hawks spoiled Docherty's farewell to the AFL with a 24-point win over the Blues at the MCG. Docherty announced his retirement during the week, and capped off his remarkable career with a goal in front of 51,271 fans on Thursday night. The 31-year-old was then given an emotional send-off after the final siren and was chaired off the ground. And one lovely detail in the post-match scenes caught the eye of AFL fans and commentators. The two people who lifted Docherty onto their shoulders to carry him off were Carlton captain Patrick Cripps and Hawthorn assistant coach Simpson. While he may be on the Hawks' coaching staff, Simpson is a Carlton great having played 342 games for the club. He spent the majority of his career playing alongside Docherty, and the pair share a close bond. And nothing epitomised their bond more than Simpson being one of the people to chair Docherty off the ground. It's extremely rare to see someone from the opposition team being part of the traditional post-match act, but Docherty and Simpson put club loyalties aside in a beautiful moment of mateship. 'This is a pretty special moment,' Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge said in commentary for Channel 7. Social media was blown away by the lovely moment, with one person writing: "Kade Simpson chairing Doc off along side Cripps. My heart is hurting." He won a Carlton best-and-fairest award and All-Australian selection. The 31-year-old entered the field of play for his 184th and final game with his family on Thursday night, and had 16 disposals between a wing and half-forward. He was moved into the attacking quarter after half-time, and celebrated with a bow to the crowd after slotting a fitting farewell goal in the third quarter. Docherty told Channel 7 after the game: 'Strange feeling, to be honest. It's all I've done for 14 years - I don't really know how to sum it up at the moment. Amazing to have all my friends, family (here), share the game with Weiters (Jacob Weitering), chair-off with Simmo, it's about as good as I could've felt other than getting the win. 'Strange feeling not coming in next week or having to do any recovery after this but I've had a career I'm pretty proud of, happy to go and relax and do some other stuff for a while.' "They've had huge impact on our football club ... so we would've liked to have started better. The Hawks getting the jump and the scoreboard going that way, it just proved too hard to be able to fight back. While the rest of the game was somewhat a stalemate, the reality was the margin was too big to drag back."
