Alex Bowen shares Love Island nostalgia and insights on evolving the hit ITV show
It's been nearly a decade since Alex Bowen set foot in the iconic Love Island villa—but the 33-year-old reality star is still as invested in the hit ITV dating show as ever.
Alex, who rose to fame on Love Island's second series back in 2016, has been watching the current series closely—and he's got thoughts. Speaking exclusively to Mirror Online, the former Islander shared his nostalgia, behind-the-scenes memories, and what the show needs to do to keep viewers hooked.
'It's crazy to think it's been nearly ten years since I was in the villa,' Alex admits. 'I always feel nostalgic watching the show. So much has changed over the years, but that core feeling—the excitement, the drama, the relationships—it's all still there.'
Now happily married to fellow Love Island alum Olivia Bowen, with whom he shares a son, Alex's life has moved well beyond the villa. But as someone who found genuine love on the show, he's passionate about what the format still gets right—and what it could do better.
Since their time on Love Island, Alex and Olivia's relationship has blossomed into one of Love Island's biggest success stories. The couple married in 2018 and are now expecting their second child together. They already share a son called Abel, who was born in 2022.
'I think it's a really exciting series!' he says of the 2025 edition. 'Love Island have already shown so many fun twists and turns, and they introduced quite a few bombshells really early on. It feels like a fresh take, which has been great to see.'
One change Alex welcomes is the producers' plan to start filming mealtimes—an area viewers have traditionally not seen.
'Back when I was in there, we used to make our own breakfast,' he recalls. 'Lunch and dinner were brought in, and we weren't allowed to talk about villa drama while eating, in case cameras missed something good. Showing that now could definitely give fans more insight into the Islanders' personalities.'
As for villa life off-camera, Alex has some amusing memories—including the challenge of keeping track of laundry.
'We had laundry baskets for each person—but I used to lose my stuff all the time,' he laughs. 'We'd end up wearing each other's clothes without even realising!'
Despite the evolution of the series, Alex believes Love Island's success lies in sticking to what it does best.
'If it's not broken, don't fix it,' he says. 'People love Love Island for the excitement, the drama, and of course, the romance. The key is giving Islanders more time in the villa. Sometimes they get dumped too early, and we don't get a chance to see their journey or who they could connect with.'
He also backs the idea of bringing back past Islanders—particularly those who didn't get their full moment.
'There are so many great people from earlier series who didn't get enough time. It'd be amazing to see them back. They'd be more mature now, and it would bring a nice balance to the villa.'

Love Island fans baffled as Islanders 'break biggest villa rule' with zero consequences
Love Island fans were left shocked during tonight's episode as Blu and Megan discussed what had been going on in the outside world - something which is usually banned on the show Things got personal in last night's Love Island as the Couple Goals challenge allowed the Islanders to air all their dirty laundry. Tonight things escalated as the Islanders discussed the outside world - which is usually strictly against the rules. As we know, Megan and Blu re-joined the villa after being booted out weeks ago, and during tonight's episode Blu spilled all on the outside world, despite Islanders usually having to be shut off from the outside world. 'You know how much I love Megan but I just feel like the first time Megan came in compared to this time is completely different," Dejon told Blu and Harry, as he continued to drop some home truths. During her first stint in the villa, Megan formed a connection with Tommy before dumping him for Conor. Blu then revealed that Megan was left "fuming" after seeing Lucy and Tommy in tape. Conor then confronted Megan about the ongoings, as she admitted they shared a few flirty texts. However, fans were left baffled that the Islanders had been allowed to speak about the outside world, as one penned: "are they allowed to talk about the outside world like this? Blu is working overtime to get that screentime!" A second wrote: "Why would they allow Blu to reveal how the public feels?? It goes against the whole point of contestants not allowed contact with the outside world." "So the producer are just gonna allow Bly to talk about what happening on the outside??!??????!! Hmmh kinda beat the point of the concept on show having no contact with the outside world….but does kinda cause drama but still." Elsewhere, the Islanders had their biggest fallout yet. Last night, the Islanders were asked which couple they thought were the most fake, and the answers caused a stir. Meg and Dejon chose Harry and Shakira, as Meg announced: 'I feel like Shakira, you've made some very hurtful comments to me that we're not very nice and I've always been there for you.' Tonight, the arguments continued, as the Islanders were asked: "Which couple are you most scared to give your honest opinion on?" Shakira and Harry choose Meg and Dejon, as Meg told to Shakira, 'I think if people were honest in the first place and told us to our faces instead of saying it constantly behind our back, it would be a different story.' However, Shakira wasn't having any of it, as she responded: 'You throwing around the fake word is rich to be honest. I don't know why you keep acting like we're the best of mates in here. From day one, you were very standoffish with any girl that was posed as a threat.' The argument continued to escalate as Meg told Shakira she wouldn't be her friend on the outside. 'I will never speak to you on the outside. I honestly can't stand you sometimes," Shakira responded. Will the girls make up?

Coronation Street's Debbie dealt with family betrayal amid dementia battle
Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) took drastic action after she discovered her own brother Kevin (Michael Le Vell) had betrayed her during the latest episode of the ITV soap Coronation Street's Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) was left on the verge of tears as she was discovered a family member's betrayal during Wednesday's episode. As viewers of the ITV soap will know, earlier in the week, Abi Webster ( Sally Carman) slept with her brother-in-law Carl (Jonathan Howard) after weeks of holding back her feelings. It all came about after she had discovered that her husband Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) had been lying to her about his cancer, having been given the all-clear months ago. She tried to pack her bags after her encounter with Carl, but was persuaded to stay by her stepson Jack (Kyran Bowes) and when the teenager spotted his Aunty Debbie on the Street, she coaxed the situation out of him. The hotel owner, who was diagnosed with vascular dementia earlier this year, stormed round to number 13 to ask what she thought she was doing when her husband is so sick. She told Abi: "If anybody treated me the way you're treating my brother, it's disgusting! Shame on you. In sickness and in health, to death us do part. Does that ring any bells?" In the heat of the moment, Abi revealed the truth as she told a shocked Debbie: "Your precious, do-no-wrong brother has been lying to us all for weeks." Furious, Debbie marched over to the garage where Kevin was at work and yelled: "You're cancer- free!" Through tears, she added: "Of all the despicable things to do, to lie about something like that, when you know what I'm going through. What I've got. Shut your gob!" Kevin tried to wriggle out of the situation, but Debbie was having none of it, as she coldly told him: "I'm sure you can justify giving me sleepless night after sleepless night. I don't want to know, because, that's the most liberating thing about having a terminal illness. You get to choose what you care about." At that point, Debbie turned to her younger brother Carl, and quickly sussed out that he was also in on the lie. Before leaving the scene, the hotel manager looked Kevin in the eye and told him: "I hope you hold onto your wife, because you've just lost your sister." Later on, Abi apologised to Kevin for telling Debbie the truth, but he took full responsibility for the situation. He added: "Can't blame our Debbie for disowning me, I bet you wish you'd left me now," although Abi did not give him a response. Despite the major revelation, Debbie and Kevin are still unaware of Abi's infidelity. Earlier this week, Carl declared that their initial encounter was 'worth the wait' and they kissed Abi claimed that things with Kevin were over. But later, in the Rovers, Carl did not seem so keen on the idea of Abi calling off her entire marriage as she weighed up what they had begun. As viewers will know, last week, Carl organised the theft of an expensive car and is aware that his brother could have him arrested at any moment. "Don't I deserve to be happy?" she asked him and he told her to go home to be with Kevin. In the days before Kevin's brother arrived on the cobbles, the mechanic was famously married to Sally Metcalfe ( Sally Dynevor) and they had daughters Rosie ( Helen Flanagan) and Sophie ( Brooke Vincent) together. They initially split up when Kevin had an an affair with Natalie Barnes ( Denise Welch) but they remarried in 2002. Their marriage survived numerous infidelities on both sides, but ultimately crumbled when Kevin fathered Jack with Molly Dobbs (Vicky Binns) before she died in the 2010 tram crash as part of the programme's 50th anniversary. Carl is the son of Kevin's dad Bill Webster (Peter Armitage) and his second wife Elaine (Judy Gridley) and spent most of his life in Germany with his parents until he arrived on the Manchester backstreet earlier this year. In real life, Jonathan spent 10 years in LA and working alongside big-name stars including Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins, but the 38-year-old actor ranks landing a part in Corrie among his greatest achievements. He told The Mirror: "Being in Coronation Street is just as big a thrill as being in a Hollywood film or an American TV series. It's all the same, everyone's telling stories, whether it's a big $200m movie or a soap like Corrie. As a Lancashire lad born and raised, the dream was to be in Coronation Street – that was the ceiling, so it feels wonderfully surreal to now be acting with people like Kevin Webster that I watched religiously as a kid. "My friends ask me, 'what you have been up to today?' and I reply 'I took Tracy Barlow for a drink in the Rovers Return!' It's just incredible to say these things."

Mo, 37, has since moved on with another model, Taia Tulher, 28, who is heavily pregnant with their first child. They have been quietly dating for almost two years and the couple live together in London. A source said: 'Mo met Selina after messaging her on social media and they hung out casually for a few months. 'She found out she was pregnant in May 2023 and it was quite a shock for them both because they'd been fairly careful. 'But she wanted to have the baby, despite the fact they weren't actually a couple. "She adores their son and Mo sees him semi-regularly. Now he's about to become a dad for a second time and he's over the moon. "He has been with Taia for quite a long time now and he feels ready to settle down.' The comedian, who recently completed a stand-up tour, broke up with his girlfriend of four years, actress Sophie Wise, at the end of 2022. It was then revealed he was looking for love on celebrity dating app Raya. If mum did a big shop, it'd be like, 'Wow, we've got yogurts. "There's boxed apple juice in the fridge and we've got crisps.' 'Those are the things you looked forward to as a kid. We didn't go on a single lavish holiday — maybe we'd go to Cardiff to see family.'
