Goodwin wants Lever confident for Demons return

The Advertiser21 hours ago

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin says Saturday's 19-point AFL loss to Gold Coast won't change his plan to get premiership defender Jake Lever back feeling good about his game after a tough 2025.
The loss to the Suns was the Demons' fourth in a row and all but extinguished any hope of finals football, leaving them 15th on the ladder and 16 points outside the eight.
Lever was one of three players axed by Goodwin for the trip to People First Stadium with the 29-year-old instead lining up for the Casey Demons in their 97-88 loss to the Suns in the VFL.
After a season where Lever has already missed eight games with an ankle injury before earning a recall to the AFL team a month ago, Goodwin said his omission was about giving him an opportunity to rediscover his best form.
"It's just to get him back feeling good about his footy, back playing where you feel confident about your game," Goodwin said.
"Sometimes you can do that at VFL level, and you come back a really much improved and confident player.
"He's someone that we value highly. We expect him to come back soon."
Regardless of Lever's situation, Goodwin will almost certainly need to change his side for next weekend's trip to Adelaide after losing Blake Howes and Harrison Petty to concussion in the first half of Saturday's game.
It's Petty's second concussion of the season after his head collided with Brayden Fiorini's hip while contesting for a loose ball.
Suns coach Damien Hardwick, whose primary concern was for Petty, did not however feel that Fiorini had done anything wrong in the incident.
"I hope he's (Petty) okay, and I'm sure he will be but we teach our player that technique and look, accidents are going to happen in AFL," Hardwick said.
"He (Fiorini) made a play on the ball. I thought he got his hands on the ball at the same time. I don't think he has a case to answer."

Melbourne Storm young gun Sua Fa'alogo limps off after playing starring role in huge win over Cronulla

Melbourne have kept their unbeaten record at home alive with a gritty 30-6 win over Cronulla, dumping the Sharks out of the NRL top eight. The spicy rivalry between the two teams continued in their Sunday afternoon match at AAMI Park, with the game up for grabs until the 64th minute when the Storm kicked away. Centre Nick Meaney crossed for the home side's third try after some brilliant lead-up work by back-rower Eli Katoa and Jahrome Hughes. The converted try pushed the margin out to a 12-point lead and set up sweet revenge for the Storm's round-11 loss to Cronulla. While Melbourne locked down third spot on the ladder, the Sharks tumbled from sixth to 10th on the back of the loss. Katoa and Hughes combined for three of Melbourne's tries, with the Tongan international scoring the opener after running through a hole off a perfect pass from his halfback. Sua Fa'alogo then had the 21,000-strong crowd on their feet when Sharks halfback Nicho Hynes attempted to bat a ball on that landed in the arms of the exciting young winger. The 22-year-old pocket rocket sprinted 90 metres downfield, outpacing Cronulla fullback Will Kennedy. Cronulla got on the scoreboard with six minutes remaining in the first half when Fa'alogo watched a Hughes bomb bounce over his head and into the arms of Braydon Trindall, who dived over the line. The teams started the second half 10-6, with a Ryan Papenhuyzen penalty goal in the 44th minute adding another two points to the home side's tally. Some poor discipline and silly errors then started to take a toll on the Sharks, and the ruthless Storm made them pay. Katoa twice out-leapt Kennedy to set up tries for Meaney and then Hughes, before Queensland Origin forward Trent Loiero iced the win with a try in the dying minutes. The victory was soured for the home side with Fa'alogo appearing to suffer a serious hamstring injury when he was clipped while making a 50-metre dash with just two minutes remaining in the match.

‘A bit terrifying': Suburban footballer's soaring mark leaves fans gasping

Blackburn footballer Daniel Wood's climb over the pack to take a screaming grab – already considered one of the greatest Australian rules marks to be captured on video – was a 'bit terrifying' according to the player himself. Footage of VFL-listed player Wood soaring into the air to take the stunning grab against Balwyn in the Eastern District Football League on Saturday has gone viral this weekend. Teammates and opponents were left in disbelief after Wood, who admits he's 'a bit of a high-flier', backed himself in to go for the mark. Crucially, he landed safely and, for good measure, kicked a goal. 'Mate, it's pretty unbelievable,' Wood told Channel Seven when asked what it meant to have his special moment captured by the cameras. 'I knew it was a pretty decent flight at the time.' Loading His VFL club, the Box Hill Hawks, happily shared his exploits on social media, describing his high grab 'as good as it gets'. Box Hill posted on X: 'Yesterday, while playing for Blackburn, our own Daniel Wood took one of the greatest marks in the history of Australian rules football. Don't believe me? Just watch... Give him a car, a boat, a plane, the International Space Station.'
