Founder detained after Uruguay cow fund goes belly up
Conexion Ganadera went belly-up last year owing tens of millions of dollars to thousands of investors.
A court ordered one of its founders, Pablo Carrasco, to be detained until February 10 next year while investigations continue into fraud and money laundering, the prosecutor's office said.
House arrest was ordered for his wife Ana Iewdiukow, along with the widow of another founding partner.
Uruguay is cattle country: beef is its main export commodity and there are more than three cows for each human inhabitant -- the highest number per capita in the world.
Uruguay also vies with neighbour Argentina for the position of top beef consumer per capita -- at more than 40 kilograms per person per year.
Media reports say Conexion Ganadera took people's money with promises to invest it in cattle, with profits to be split with the farmers.
Much of the money was allegedly used for other purposes, and prosecutors suspect it may have been a Ponzi scheme.
Two other firms that made similar investment promises have also collapsed in Uruguay -- with about 7,000 investors affected in the three cases.
"It is still unknown where all the money is," prosecutor Enrique Rodriguez said.
"The people call it fraud, but it's theft -- they stole our savings," investor Silvia Bello told AFP at a protest outside the court in Montevideo.
The court ordered real estate and vehicles worth some $16-million to be frozen in the Conexion Ganadera case -- a fraction of the estimated $250-million that has gone missing.

Nine shot dead at pool bar in Ecuador tourist city
The shooting comes as Ecuador experiences its most violent start to a year in recent history. At least nine people were shot dead Saturday while playing pool in a tourist city in southwestern Ecuador, the country's prosecutor's office said. A group of armed men opened fire on several people at a bar in a working-class neighborhood of General Villamil Playas, a coastal city in the southern Guayas province and a destination for local tourists. The Ecuadorian prosecutor's office said on X that "armed individuals entered the establishment and shot at those present." Viral images on social media showed at least nine bloodied bodies lying on the floor around several pool tables. Local media reports said the attackers were armed with automatic rifles. At the bar where the massacre occurred, relatives held two coffins Saturday night. Bullet holes were visible on the pool tables, according to images captured by an AFP reporter. Police Colonel Jhanon Varela told the media that two people were injured in the attack and were treated at a local hospital. Authorities have only been able to identify one body at the scene. "Unfortunately, when the police arrive, many of those affected by this event are removed from the scene by residents and family members," Varela said. "It is presumed that there may be more victims." 'Won't surrender' Guayas Prefect Marcela Aguinaga said one of the victims was a coach at a provincial football school. Aguinaga wrote on X: "Violence... seeks to bring us to our knees, silence us, and accustom us to horror. But we will not stay silent. Nor will we surrender." The shooting comes as Ecuador experiences its most violent start to a year in recent history, according to experts. In the first five months of 2025, Ecuador recorded 4,051 homicides, according to official figures. Drug trafficking organizations have been multiplying in Ecuador, where the homicide rate rose from six per 100,000 residents in 2018 to 38 per 100,000 in 2024. Following the recapture in June of the country's biggest drug lord, Adolfo Macias, alias Fito, after his escape from a maximum-security prison in 2024, criminal gang violence continues unabated. This week, in the western province of Manabi, the stronghold of Fito and his gang, Los Choneros, at least 20 people were killed in deadly violence in several cities, including Manta, where Fito was recaptured. Saturday afternoon, Interior Minister John Reimberg announced increased security in Manta, one of Ecuador's main fishing ports, with 2,500 police officers "deployed at strategic points." After his arrest, Fito agreed to be extradited to the United States, where prosecutors accuse him of cocaine and arms trafficking. Once considered a bastion of peace in Latin America, Ecuador has been plunged into crisis after years of expansion by transnational cartels that use its ports to ship drugs to the United States and Europe. Next Stay Close ✕ Rashford is among five players to have informed United they wish to explore a future away from Old Trafford, where he came through the academy and scored 138 goals in 426 first-team appearances. The England international admitted he was "ready for a new challenge" in December and last month revealed he would like to play alongside Barcelona's teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal. Rashford has trained away from Amorim's first-team squad since pre-season began. Barcelona sporting director Deco said in May that he liked Rashford and head coach Hansi Flick described the forward as a "fantastic player". Rashford does not have a squad number at United having lost the 10 shirt to Brazil forward Matheus Cunha, who arrived at Old Trafford during the current transfer window along with left-back Diego Leon. Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo is expected to join them after United finally struck a deal with Brentford worth an initial £65 million ($87 million). United will likely have to fund any further deals through departures. Even if Rashford were to leave initially on loan, the savings on the wage bill would be significant. Barcelona had looked set to sign Spain winger Nico Williams but the 23-year-old recently signed a new 10-year contract at Athletic Bilbao. The Catalan giants won a league and cup double last season -- Flick's first campaign at the club. AFP Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel.

Ukraine evacuates 43 deportees held on Russian-Georgian border
Ukraine said Saturday it had evacuated 43 of its citizens recently deported from Russia who were being held in Georgia in dire conditions, accusing Moscow of "weaponizing" deportations. At least 56 Ukrainians, mostly prisoners who completed their sentences and were subsequently ordered to leave Russia, were being held in a basement facility near the Russian-Georgian border, according to aid group Volunteers Tbilisi. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said 43 Ukrainians, many lacking documents, had been evacuated from Georgia via Moldova, "including former political prisoner Andrii Kolomiyets". More people still remain in "difficult" conditions at the Russian-Georgian border, Sybiga said on X. The treatment of those held at the border facility near the Dariali crossing is "inhumane", said Maria Belkina, the head of Volunteers Tbilisi. "They are without basic necessities -- food, water, sanitation," she told AFP, adding that some of the deportees had medical conditions, including suspected tuberculosis and HIV. Russia may be accelerating deportations ahead of expected changes to Georgian migration laws in September, which are aimed at tightening entries, she added. While Georgia has not officially closed the border to Ukrainian nationals, Belkina said a recent policy shift has delayed entry. "Russia is weaponizing the deportation of Ukrainian citizens through Georgia," Sybiga said, calling on Russia to transport the deportees directly to its border with Ukraine instead. It was not clear how many people remained in the border facility, which only has 17 beds and no basic amenities and where some have been kept for weeks, according to Volunteers Tbilisi. Rights groups estimate up to 800 more Ukrainians could be transferred to the border in the coming weeks.
