Sarawak to merge three major water entities by June to boost statewide efficiency
SIBU (April 26): The Sarawak government will officially merge the state's three main water supply entities — Sibu Water Board, Kuching Water Board, and Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (formerly known as LAKU Management Sdn Bhd) — into a single entity by June this year.
Sarawak's Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the merger aims to streamline operations, strengthen integration, and boost water management efficiency across the state, as part of Sarawak's long-term water infrastructure strategy.
'This merger excludes only the JKR Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB). The three entities — Sibu Water Board, Kuching Water Board and LAKU — will be merged into one entity that will be launched by the Premier of Sarawak in June,' Julaihi said at SWB's annual dinner and Aidilfitri gathering here last night.
He added that the consolidation is being guided by a Sarawak-specific model tailored to meet the state's unique needs, led by the Integrated Management Office under Puan Malseni Jamal.
'This is being done using a Sarawak-made model, a merger concept tailored specifically for the needs of Sarawak,' he said.
'We believe this merger is based on the Sarawak mould will fit us well. It must be done according to our own mould. If we bring in something from elsewhere, it might not be suitable.' he reiterated.
Julaihi also highlighted the ongoing RM1.1 billion statewide project to replace 2,740km of aging water pipes over the next five years.
For Sibu alone, RM338 million has been allocated for pipe upgrades, with RM170 million going to the Sibu Water Board and RM168 million for the Department of Rural Water Supply.
'With this upgrade and pipe replacement projects, we aim to resolve the long-standing water supply issues in Sibu and the surrounding areas, including Bawang Assan, Tanjung Manis, and Selangau,' he said.
Julaihi also stressed that although issues such as pipe leakages cannot be solved overnight, improvements have already been felt over the past three years, particularly during peak periods such as Hari Raya.
'This shows the seriousness of the Sarawak government in solving the long-term problem of water supply,' he said. 'It is an ongoing process but once completed, we hope water issues will become history.'

Julaihi also cautioned against third-party interference along water distribution routes, stressing the importance of following standard operating procedures (SOPs) to avoid damage and service disruptions.
'If any accidental or intentional damage occurs, please do not conceal it. Inform the water agency immediately so we can act quickly and avoid public complaints. Cooperation is key to protecting consumer interests,' he said.
During the event, Julaihi also presented long-service awards to SWB staff, including certificates for 20 and 30 years of service, the 2023–2024 Excellent Service Awards, and a special staff
recognition award.
Also present were Permanent Secretary of the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Datu Jafri Lias, SWB general manager Abdul Malik Abdullah and other dignitaries. julaihi narawi merge utility companies

Call to give rural S'wak school-leavers a chance at Universiti Teknologi Petronas
Julaihi delivers his speech. — Photo by Chimon Upon SEBUYAU (July 27): Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), a subsidiary of Petronas, has been encouraged to facilitate higher education opportunities at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) for rural school-leavers, particularly from SMK Sebuyau, to help nurture local talent and bridge the rural-urban education gap. Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunications, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, who is also Sebuyau assemblyman, said many rural youths possessed the potential and talent to excel if given access to quality education in a supportive learning environment. 'I strongly hope that Petronas will give special consideration to SPM school leavers here by opening the door for them to pursue their studies at UTP soon,' he told a press conference after officiating the Petronas Powering Knowledge: MLNG Bestari Outreach Programme handing over ceremony at SMK Sebuyau yesterday. He emphasised that such opportunities would allow rural students to experience the same educational environment and facilities as their urban counterparts, offering them a fair platform to succeed. 'They just need the space and support. I believe they can succeed and attain excellent results,' he said. Julaihi said with access to higher education, Sarawak could nurture more local engineering talent to serve in Petronas, the state government, or other players in the oil and gas sector including Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros). 'Therefore, I hope Petronas will respond positively and look into expanding higher education access for rural youth in Sarawak.' Meanwhile, he expressed appreciation for Petronas's contribution through its subsidiary, MLNG, to SMK Sebuyau, particularly in upgrading the school's facilities. He said SMK Sebuyau remains one of the older schools in the area and is in urgent need of a complete replacement. 'I've contributed canopies for the school's use, but they're still insufficient given the growing number of students,' he said, adding that assistance was also channelled under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) to construct a new community hall. Julaihi revealed that the current student population at SMK Sebuyau has reached 936. 'With such a large number, I'm truly grateful for Petronas MLNG's support. 'Without facility limitations, this school could probably accommodate even more students,' he said. Julaihi Narawi mlng school-leavers Universiti Teknologi Petronas

The contribution was made under the Petronas Powering Knowledge: MLNG Bestari Outreach programme and facilitated the refurbishment of the school's computer lab, Form 5 classroom block and the construction of a new male dormitory. According to Petronas LNG Assets senior vice president Abang Yusuf Abang Puteh, the initiative was not just a Corporate Social Responsibility effort, but a show of their unwavering commitment to rural community development and empowerment. 'We see this effort as a holistic approach that underscores the importance of access to quality education. Education is not only a fundamental right, it is a catalyst for societal progress and transformation,' he said during a handing over ceremony today. The ceremony was officiated by Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi. Abang Yusuf said with such support, schools that faced any sort of constraints could now enjoy better facilities and learning resources. 'This initiative acts as a bridge connecting educational institutions, government agencies, the private sector and local communities to build a more sustainable and inclusive learning ecosystem. 'The impact goes beyond academic achievement and contributes to the overall well-being of the community,' he said. The MLNG Bestari Outreach programme has also been extended to other areas including Ulu Roban, Tatau, Sebauh, Betong and Dalat mainly through the provision of learning equipment. Abang Yusuf said that additionally, under the MLNG Borneo Bestari Programme, MLNG was collaborating with Yayasan Sarawak to sponsor 80 Sarawakian students from Form 1 to Form 5 annually to attend residential schools in Peninsula and Sarawak from 2024-2029. 'Our hope is that these sponsored students will excel in their SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) exams and become eligible for the Petronas Education Sponsorship Programme, which allows them to further their studies locally and abroad, and ultimately prepare them for employment at Petronas. 'This is our long-term goal — we want to not only support sustainable education but also meet future workforce needs in the oil and gas industry. 'In this regard, I hope that students from Sebuyau will also be among those selected to join the MLNG Borneo Bestari programme as we are confident that children from Sarawak, especially those from rural areas, can keep pace with their peers from major urban centres,' he said. Malaysia to receive ANKA MALE-UAS next year
ISTANBUL: Malaysia is expected to receive the Turkish-made ANKA Medium Altitude Long Endurance-Unmanned Aerial System (MALE-UAS) by March 2026, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He said the ANKA MALE-UAS, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), is currently undergoing radar system integration and radio communication installation, with the equipment sourced from Germany. "Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) officers who will operate ANKA are currently undergoing training with the supplier. "When we acquire assets like this, operational training is also provided by the supplying company," he told reporters here on Thursday. On the possibility of acquiring additional ANKA MALE-UAS units, Mohamed Khaled said future procurement of defence assets will be decided by the government based on the 13th Malaysia Plan, scheduled to be tabled on July 31. Defence Ministry and TAI signed the contract for the procurement of three units of the ANKA MALE-UAS, along with associated support equipment, during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) in May 2023. Malaysia is believed to have selected the ANKA-S variant, capable of operating at altitudes of up to 30,000 feet for 24 to 30 hours, with a payload capacity ranging from 250 to 350 kilogrammes. Beyond Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, the advanced ANKA MALE-UAS could also be armed with four MAM Smart Micro Missiles, developed by Türkiye's defence company, ROKETSAN, for precision ground-attack missions. Mohamed Khaled, who concluded a three-day official visit to Turkiye today, attended the 2025 International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) and inspected the construction of the second batch of three Littoral Mission Ships (LMS) by Savunma Teknolojileri Muhendislik (STM). – Bernama
