Call to give rural S'wak school-leavers a chance at Universiti Teknologi Petronas
SEBUYAU (July 27): Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), a subsidiary of Petronas, has been encouraged to facilitate higher education opportunities at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) for rural school-leavers, particularly from SMK Sebuyau, to help nurture local talent and bridge the rural-urban education gap.
Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunications, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, who is also Sebuyau assemblyman, said many rural youths possessed the potential and talent to excel if given access to quality education in a supportive learning environment.
'I strongly hope that Petronas will give special consideration to SPM school leavers here by opening the door for them to pursue their studies at UTP soon,' he told a press conference after officiating the Petronas Powering Knowledge: MLNG Bestari Outreach Programme handing over ceremony at SMK Sebuyau yesterday.
He emphasised that such opportunities would allow rural students to experience the same educational environment and facilities as their urban counterparts, offering them a fair platform to succeed.
'They just need the space and support. I believe they can succeed and attain excellent results,' he said.
Julaihi said with access to higher education, Sarawak could nurture more local engineering talent to serve in Petronas, the state government, or other players in the oil and gas sector including Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros).
'Therefore, I hope Petronas will respond positively and look into expanding higher education access for rural youth in Sarawak.'
Meanwhile, he expressed appreciation for Petronas's contribution through its subsidiary, MLNG, to SMK Sebuyau, particularly in upgrading the school's facilities.
He said SMK Sebuyau remains one of the older schools in the area and is in urgent need of a complete replacement.
'I've contributed canopies for the school's use, but they're still insufficient given the growing number of students,' he said, adding that assistance was also channelled under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) to construct a new community hall.
Julaihi revealed that the current student population at SMK Sebuyau has reached 936.
'With such a large number, I'm truly grateful for Petronas MLNG's support.

Azalina was responding to a question from Sabri Azit (PN-Jerai) regarding the government's response to Petronas' decision to reduce over 5,000 of its workforce due to the company's restructuring and the impact on its contribution to national income. In another development, in response to a question from Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem (GPS-Serian) on the current status of overlapping powers between Petronas and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) in Sarawak, Azalina informed that a Joint Declaration signed on May 21, 2025 serves as the foundation for the formation of a joint framework between Petronas and Petros. Through the declaration, Petronas will continue to carry out its roles and responsibilities as provided under the Petroleum Development Act 1974, including from upstream sector activities up to the sale of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to international markets. Apart from that, Petros has been appointed by the Sarawak state government as the gas aggregator for the state's domestic market, effective March 1, 2025. This appointment will be respected by all industry players involved in the distribution and supply of gas to domestic consumers.

Scheduled load shedding to impact Sabah, Labuan from Aug 1-7
KOTA KINABALU: A load shedding operation will be carried out in Sabah and Labuan from Aug 1 to Aug 7 due to scheduled maintenance at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Kimanis, Papar. These works carried out by PETRONAS will impact over 600,000 domestic users in Sabah and Labuan, said Sabah Electricity Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar at a press conference here on Wednesday (July 30). He said maintenance works on offshore and onshore platforms would result in the gas supplies to the two Independent Power Producers (IPP) in Kimanis being disconnected. These two IPPs are the Kimanis Power plant (255MW) and SPRE power plant (100MW), he said. Yaakob said they did not foresee any power disruptions in the initial phase of discussions with PETRONAS and the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) earlier this year. However, based on information received on Tuesday (July 29), it was found that the power plants were unable to operate using alternative fuel, and this resulted in the need to load the shed, he said. He said a total of 195MW of power will be lost in the Sabah grid system for this seven-day period, which explains the load shedding from Aug 1 to Aug 7. Yaakob said that if possible, he hoped PETRONAS could postpone the maintenance works at SOGT until the generation capacity stabilises, so that there would be no power supply disruptions. 'This measure is needed to ensure stability in Sabah's electricity system. If maintenance works were put on hold, then the people of Sabah will have some relief,' he said. He said the load shedding process would be inconvenient to users in Sabah and Labuan, especially during peak hours between 10am and 10pm, where each area would have no supply for an hour or two, on a rotation basis. Yaakob said Sabah Electricity would work closely with all stakeholders, especially the IPPs and ECoS, to monitor the situation while taking proactive measures to reduce power disruptions. He urged the public to get more information on the load shedding schedule, which includes time, date and area affected via the Sabah Electricity Facebook page and the Sabah Electricity application.

SE urges SOGT maintenance postponement to avoid major power cuts

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity (SE) has requested Petronas to postpone scheduled maintenance at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) to avoid large-scale electricity rationing affecting around 600,000 domestic users in Sabah and Labuan. SE Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the planned rotation-based rationing is expected to run from this Friday until 7 August across the state and Labuan. He explained that initial arrangements had anticipated no supply disruption, following earlier discussions with Petronas and the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos). However, he said new information received on Tuesday revealed that the system could not operate on alternative fuel as expected, potentially reducing grid capacity by 195 Megawatts for seven days. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Mohd Yaakob said further talks with Petronas would be held later in the day to explore the possibility of delaying the maintenance until capacity stabilises. He added that postponing the works would help ease the situation, as scheduled outages would otherwise affect users during peak hours from 10am to 10pm, lasting one to two hours each time.
