'Speak Marathi or...': Mira Road sweet shop owner thrashed by MNS Supporters, video sparks outrage

Time of India3 days ago
A shocking incident in Mira Road, near Mumbai, has sparked outrage after a sweet shop owner was allegedly beaten up for not speaking in Marathi. As per a TOI report, seven unidentified men, suspected to be members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), have been booked by the Kashimira police for the assault.
According to the FIR, the incident took place on Tuesday morning at around 10:30 am. Babulal Khimji Chaudhary, a 48-year-old sweet shop owner, said that a group of men wearing MNS symbols on their clothing entered his shop and asked for water.
When the shop worker spoke to them in Hindi, the men reportedly got angry and started abusing and threatening him for not speaking in Marathi. Chaudhary said the argument escalated when he explained that many of his workers were from other states and not fluent in Marathi.
Assault caught on camera
Chaudhary added that two of the men approached him directly and told him he must speak Marathi if he wants to work in Maharashtra. When he tried to explain his point, he was allegedly thrashed. 'They even made a video of the attack and shared it on social media,' he said.
When asked what language is spoken in Maharashtra, Chaudhary said he responded, 'All languages are spoken in Maharashtra.' According to him, this made the men even more furious.

MNS responds
A TOI report revealed that an MNS office-bearer confirmed there was an argument over the language issue but claimed the shop owner was 'arrogant.' He said the party workers were nearby, celebrating the state government's rollback of the three-language policy resolution, and had gone to the shop to buy water when the incident occurred.
'The owner said all languages are spoken in Maharashtra, and that led to some heated words,' the office-bearer claimed.
The bigger picture
The incident comes amid ongoing political discussions around language use in Maharashtra. The state recently rolled back its decision to implement a three-language policy in schools, following strong reactions from political parties and citizens.
Police are investigating the case, and the video is being used as evidence. So far, no arrests have been made.

Woman duped of 7.3L in online fraud

1 2 3 Pune: Cybercrooks, posing as officials from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), duped a 44-year-old woman from Chikhali of Rs7.30 lakh by instilling fear that her Aadhaar was being misused for money laundering. The fraud occurred between June 21 and 24, during which the woman not only transferred her savings to the crooks but also a personal loan, which the crooks obtained in her name using her PAN card, Aadhaar card, and debit card details. The woman, who works with a private company in the Pimpri Chinchwad area, filed an online complaint after realising she was being duped. After preliminary investigations, a case was registered with the Chikhali police on Thursday. Inspector Amol Phadtare of the Chikhali police told TOI that, according to the complainant, on June 21, she received a call from an unknown cellphone number. The caller claimed to be from UIDAI and informed her that her Aadhaar number was misused for money laundering. "The caller told the woman that her case was forwarded to the Mumbai police's crime branch and she needed to get a clearance certificate from the police. He also instructed the woman to upload the certificate to UIDAI and provided her with a cellphone number to lodge a complaint," Phadtare said. The caller then informed the woman that she needed to transfer her money to the Reserve Bank of India's account for verification purposes. After the verification, the RBI would return her money. "The woman then transferred Rs 4.87 lakh through RTGS and UPI bank transfer to the bank account numbers provided to her," he said. Phadtare mentioned that the crooks had taken the woman's PAN, Aadhaar, and debit card numbers. "Using these details, the crooks obtained a personal loan of Rs 2.40 lakh in the woman's name and made her transfer that amount too," Phadtare said. The officer stated that the woman realised she was duped after the crooks stopped calling her. "She then approached the police. We have sought the details of all the transactions from the woman's bank. Our investigations are ongoing," the officer said. Borivli-Thane tunnel casting yard planned close to SGNP

Mumbai: A portion of Sanjay Gandhi National Park's (SGNP) eco sensitive zone (ESZ) in Mira Road is set to be used for a 22.6-acre casting yard for the Borivli-Thane twin tunnel project, prompting protests from activists. A casting yard is where concrete structures like segments, parapets and beams for an infrastructure project are cast and is located in a manner that allows easy access from the project site. Of the 22.6-acre plot for the tunnel project's casting yard, 5 acre falls within the ESZ. Activist Stalin D of NGO Vanashakti told TOI that the ESZ notification strictly prohibits setting up of polluting industries inside the boundaries of the zone. "Any action that violates it will be challenged in the courts. The agencies involved cannot pretend to be ignorant of the law and they cannot create third party rights in the ESZ," he said. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai He said the onus is on the forest department and Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation to adhere to the law. "The region inside the ESZ is being rapidly degraded to facilitate construction projects. This is part of a larger conspiracy to destroy the natural landscape virtually inside the national park," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The project is being executed by MMRDA through its contractor, Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Ltd. MMRDA officials did not respond to queries from TOI. The proposal for the casting yard says it will not affect the ESZ's ecological balance (see graphic). Local activists claimed that even tribal land is part of this casting yard plot. Uttam Naik, Mira-Bhayander representative of People's Republican Party, recently wrote to revenue department officials on this issue. "Big machinery will only harm the surrounding environment and increase pollution," he complained. Last week, the national green tribunal had ordered the closure of two casting yards and ready-mix cement plants operating within the limits of the ESZ of SGNP at Thane's Ghodbunder Road. Once opened, the tunnels will help shave 12km from a Thane-Borivli trip, saving up to 1 hour, and will also provide direct connectivity, significantly decongesting traffic on Ghodbunder Road and Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road.

Eknath Shinde Explains Why He Said 'Jai Gujarat' At Pune Event

Mumbai (Maharashtra): Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday said that he raised the "Jai Gujarat" slogan while addressing a gathering in Pune to pay his respects to the Gujarati community present at the program. Responding to the critiques, Mr Shinde said that those who were criticising him for raising the slogan must look within themselves. He added that the Mahayuti government has worked hard for Marathi to be granted the status of a classical language. "Today, there were 3-4 events in Pune where brothers and sisters from the Gujarati community were present; they have been living there for many years. Marathi and Gujarati people live together harmoniously, and they have built a large sports complex. I attended that event. After my speech there, I said Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Gujarat, because Jai Hind is the pride of our country, Jai Maharashtra - after all, we are proud of Maharashtra. And I said 'Jai Gujarat' because the Gujarati community, together, has built a sports complex there. And that is why I respected and praised them... I will only say that those who criticise us should first look within themselves. Marathi is our identity, and Hindutva is our soul. We have worked to grant Marathi the status of a classical language. There will be no compromise with the Marathi language. Before pointing fingers at others, they should look within themselves," Mr Shinde said at a press conference. Amid the ongoing political sparring between the ruling Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) over the charge of imposing Hindi, Mr Shinde attacked the opposition parties, accusing them of spreading "fake narratives" regarding the Indian Constitution and the danger to reservations. "Pakistan flags were also seen in the Lok Sabha elections, so where did the Marathi love go? In the fake narrative, they said that the Constitution is also in danger, and the reservation will also end. So, they cannot win the elections with a fake narrative. On the basis of our work, we have got a huge majority in the Assembly and the upcoming local self-government institutions elections are coming up. So they want to dig up such issues and do politics on them and get votes here. But people are very intelligent, and Mahayuti will win," Mr Shinde added. This comes after Mr Shinde raised several eyebrows while concluding his speech with the "Jai Gujarat" slogan. He was speaking in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the inauguration ceremony of the 'Jairaj Sports and Convention Centre' built by the Shree Poona Gujarati Bandhu Samaj in Pune's Kondhwa. Earlier today, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended his Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's "Jai Gujarat" remarks and said that creating a ruckus over the issue was unnecessary.
