Kevin Spacey says ‘glad to be working again'
Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey said Tuesday he was 'glad to be working again' as he accepted a lifetime's achievement award from a charity on the sideline of the Cannes film festival.
Spacey's presence at a gala dinner organized by the Better World Fund marks another step in the rehabilitation of the star who has been dogged by sexual assault allegations.
'I feel surrounded by so much affection and love. I've heard from so many of my friends and colleagues and co-stars in the last week since this award was announced,' he told reporters at the event. 'It's very nice to be back.'
Asked if it was the beginning of a comeback, he replied: 'I'm glad to be working, I'll tell you that.'
The invitation to Cannes -- where Spacey has not been seen on the red carpet since 2016 -- comes as the main festival has been enforcing a no-tolerance policy on sexual misconduct, under pressure from lawmakers and #MeToo anti-abuse activists.
French actor Theo Navarro-Mussy -- who denies rape allegations made by three women -- was barred last week from the premiere of a French film in the running for the festival's top prize.
A festival spokesperson declined to comment about Spacey's presence in Cannes when contacted by AFP.
Spacey was acquitted of nine cases of alleged sex offences in Britain in 2023 and a New York court dismissed a $40 million civil sexual misconduct lawsuit against the 'Usual Suspects' actor in 2022.
But last May new claims of inappropriate sexual behaviour emerged in a British television documentary, 'Spacey Unmasked'.
In it, 10 men not involved in the UK court case against Spacey accused him of behaving inappropriately towards them.
The 65-year-old has always denied any wrongdoing.
In February, lawyers for former actor Ruari Cannon told AFP that he was taking a case to Britain's High Court against Spacey and London's Old Vic Theatre, where the actor was artistic director between 2003 and 2015.
In the documentary, Cannon accused Spacey of having touched him inappropriately in London when he was 21 years old and the American star was 53.

He is the most followed streamer on Twitch. According to the New York Times, Ibai first got into the gaming world when he was 15, posting videos to YouTube of himself and his friends playing Call of Duty. Later, he began commentating professionally for Spain's Professional Video Game League (LVP), as well as for national soccer matches and other real-life spotting events. In more recent years, he co-founded the esports organization KOI and has turned the annual La Velada del Año into a star-studded event.

A technician found the used sock discarded near Jackson's dressing room after the concert in the southern city of Nimes in July 1997, auctioneer Aurore Illy told AFP. The self-styled 'King of Pop' wore white athletic socks adorned with rhinestones during his 'HIStory World Tour' in 1997, according to specialist website Jackson can be seen wearing them in clips of him performing his hit 'Billie Jean'. Decades later, the off-white item of clothing is covered in stains, and the rhinestones adorning it have yellowed with age, in a picture posted on the website. 'It really is an exceptional object - even a cult one for Michael Jackson fans,' Illy said. The sock, initially valued at 3,000 to 4,000 euros ($3,400-4,500), sold for 7,688 euros ($8,822) at the Nimes auction house. A Macau gaming resort in 2009 paid $350,000 for a glittery glove Jackson wore when he performed his first 'moonwalk' dance in 1983. A hat he wore just before that performance sold for more than $80,000 in Paris in 2023. Jackson died of a fatal overdose in 2009 aged 50. He still has a huge fan base, despite child molestation accusations against him during his lifetime and after his death, which he and his estate have denied.

Older brother of Oasis stars charged with rape

Paul Gallagher, 59, also faces charges of coercive and controlling behaviour and three counts of sexual assault, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. In addition, he is charged with three counts of intentional strangulation, two counts of making a threat to kill and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, it added. The offences, which relate to the same woman, are alleged to have taken place between 2022-24. Noel and Liam, who shot to fame in the mid-1990s Britpop era, have been performing to sell-out crowds for the first time since an acrimonious split nearly 16 years ago. Paul Gallagher, who has never been part of Oasis, will appear before Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London on August 27. AFP
