Mumbai: A few days after the state cabinet approved the Rs 20,787 crore Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth highway,
NCP
(SP) working president
Supriya Sule
has stepped into the row over the project, saying the cash-starved state govt will not be able to afford the massive expenditure on the proposal.
"State govt must give a serious thought to the huge expenditure on the project, particularly in view of the critical financial situation of the state.
It will take several decades to restore the situation. It will have a massive impact on the Marathi people," Sule said.
Sule referred to a series of reports in a section of the media, saying there is strong opposition to the project from all sections. "When our financial situation is very bad, still we are in the process of securing a loan of Rs 30,000 crore, with an interest of 8.85%, it is beyond the financial capacity of the state to afford such a high interest," Sule said.
Sule said that at a juncture when the state govt has failed to release the salaries of its own employees, while there is acute shortage of funds for water mission projects, the govt has secured huge loans for a project which has been opposed in all sections.

Sule said it was found that elected representatives of almost all the political parties have opposed the land acquisition process. "We need infrastructure projects, but at the same time, govt should not impose such projects on the people.

If we accept the Shaktipeeth highway, there will be adverse impact on the financial situation of the state. Even the planning and finance departments have raised concern over the impact of the project on the financial situation of the project," Sule said.
Sule asked why the govt is insisting on implementing the project at a juncture when farmers have opposed it. "Farmers are not keen on the highway, if the project is implemented, it will have adverse impact on the financial situation of the state.
People must examine the remarks of the finance and planning department," she said.
MPCC chief Harshawardhan Sapkal alleged that the Shaktipeeth highway is being implemented at the behest of Delhi's elite, to benefit favoured industrialists.

MPCC president Harshawardhan Sapkal alleged that the Shaktipeeth highway is being planned and implemented at the behest of Delhi's elite, to benefit favoured industrialists.
Sapkal said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is pushing for the Shaktipeeth highway on orders from Delhi's power brokers. "A corridor is being planned from central India to Goa's port to help favoured industrialists export their raw materials abroad.
This is a red-carpet project exclusively for them," Sapkal said.
Sapkal said that while an allocation of Rs 20,000 crore has been made, the expenditure could go up to Rs 1.5 lakh crore and is a ploy for corrupt profiteering. "This is the beginning of pushing Maharashtra towards bankruptcy, since the debt burden has cross the mark of Rs 9.82 lakh crore," he said.

Hefty fees by PSIEC have halted pre-1992 plot deals, rues industry

Ludhiana: Transfers of industrial land under Punjab Small Industries & Export Corporation (PSIEC) policy impose a hefty "unearned profit" charge on plots allotted before 1992. The policy mandates a payment of Rs 7,500 per sq yard, up from the older and far lower rates, whenever these plots change hands. The revision, introduced under PSIEC's changed transfer framework, continues to stall transfer of plots. Industry stalwarts say it effectively blocks legitimate sales and transfers. PSIEC had revised the fee schedule, which was ostensibly introduced to capture the "unearned increase" in land values over decades, aiming to curb speculative transfers. However, local business associations argue that the blanket Rs 7,500/sq yard charge, roughly 16 times the older rate, has been burdensome deterring genuine transfers. Industrial plot sales across Punjab have essentially screeched to a halt, with investors freezing activity amid uncertainty. Stakeholders demand a return to a sustainable, graduated fee structure consistent with past norms and economic realities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Industrialists say the policy threatens MSMEs of the city's core industries, many of whom require smooth transfers for growth, exit planning, or family succession. As most of the focal points, except those under Phase VIII, are of the pre-1992 era, it is affecting most of them. Rahul Ahuja, former CII Punjab chairman and convener of the Apex Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Punjab, said, "This move has virtually stalled all transactions. It must be rolled back to the previous structure, if not something better." Ashpreet Sahni, former chairman of CII Ludhiana, called for a complete withdrawal. "The unearned profit policy must be withdrawn and replaced with a transparent, rational, industry-friendly approach. It was being said that the matter would be looked into and resolved after elections. Hopefully, it will be done now," he said. They said the transfer fees in the 1990s were as low as Rs 450 per sq yard compared to the current demands highlighting the sharp increase. The industry is optimistic that an urgent policy correction would be brought in, now that Sanjeev Arora is Punjab's new industries minister.

SDM seeks anticipatory bail after steno's arrest

Ludhiana: SDM (Raikot) Gurbir Singh Kohli filed an anticipatory bail plea following the arrest of his stenographer in a corruption case. He alleged political pressure from MLA (Raikot) Hakam Singh Thekedar and his personal assistant to issue illegal orders in revenue matters. The bail application, filed in the court of Special Judge Amrinder Singh Shergill, was dismissed as premature. The court noted that the SDM has not yet been named as an accused and granted him the liberty to seek legal remedy if and when that happens. The case dates back to June 13 arrest of Jatinder Singh, the stenographer posted in the SDM's office, who was caught accepting a bribe of over Rs 24 lakh. The arrest followed a complaint by a resident of Sukhana village, who alleged that both the SDM and his stenographer were extorting money in exchange for official work. In his bail plea, the SDM claimed that he was being falsely implicated for resisting political interference. He alleged that since his posting as SDM, Raikot on April 16, 2025 (and during his previous tenure from October, 2021 to October, 2023), the MLA and his aide repeatedly pressured him—through personal meetings, phone calls, and WhatsApp messages—to pass unlawful orders. He cited a specific instance where he refused to cancel a sale deed that lacked legal merit, which allegedly angered the MLA and his assistant. According to the SDM, the refusal led to a conspiracy to frame him in the bribery case. Raikot MLA Hakam Singh Thekedar has strongly denied the allegations, saying that he never asked the SDM to engage in any illegal activity.
