Supriya Sule: NCP to back Thackerays on Hindi stand

NAGPUR: NCP-SP working president and Baramati MP Supriya Sule on Saturday reiterated the party's stance against "imposing" Hindi, aligning with her father Sharad Pawar's views. "Language education is not a political issue. Subjects like health, education and history should stay above politics. Our party will participate in full strength in the Mumbai rally against imposition of Hindi. If directed by the party, I will also join the protest," she said. She also expressed disappointment over CM Devendra Fadnavis not responding to requests for meetings over key issues. "I've sought time to discuss issues like farm loan waivers and crop insurance. There is also a need to discuss the language issue."

‘Can't spoil children's future': Supriya Sule affirms NCP-SP's participation in ‘Three Language Policy' stir

Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Saturday affirmed the party's participation in the Hindi language imposition protest to be held on July 5, jointly organised by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena (UBT). While addressing reporters in Nagpur, Sule accused the Maharashtra government of 'attempting to spoil the future of children' by making Hindi compulsory up to Class 4 under the 'Three Language Policy'. She stressed that language education is an 'important social issue' and not a political one, which should be taken very seriously with the guidance of experts. On the Maharashtra government mandating Hindi as the default third language in schools, NCP(SP) MP Sule said, 'This is an important social issue for us. It is not a political issue. Language education is an issue that should be taken very seriously. We should move forward under the guidance of experts. No other state is working in this manner. I don't understand why Maharashtra is taking such an insistent stance. We cannot spoil the future of children to please someone. Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) will participate in the march (announced by Shiv Sena-UBT along with Raj Thackeray) with full force. Education is a serious issue for us.' She also clarified that while a committee might have recommended Hindi, committees only provide recommendations, and the final decision rests with the government. She refuted claims that the decision was made during the Mahavikas Aghadi government Speaking on the issue of Shaktipeeth Mahamarga, Sule highlighted that the Finance Ministry has 'red-flagged' or noted concerns about the high cost of the project. She stated that the Shaktipeeth Expressway project's budget exceeds the limits set by the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act, and if the cost burden increases, '22% of the government's funds would be consumed solely by repayments,' she said. Shaktipeeth Mahamarga is touted as a transformative route connecting key religious and economic regions. She also pointed out that the loan for the Shaktipeeth Expressway project is being acquired at a higher interest rate, which is unusual for special projects that typically receive loans at 6.35 per cent. Furthermore, she mentioned considerable opposition to land acquisition in affected areas and that experts suggested upgrading the existing road instead of building a new parallel one. Sule found it 'a cause for serious concern' if the state's finance department is raising objections, likening it to a household spending significantly more than it earns. Sule also held a meeting with party workers in Nagpur to discuss the party's preparation for local body elections. Sule said, 'Any political party is ready for polls 24/7, and when they are not busy in elections, they are serving people. We will decide on names when the dates for local body elections approach.' During her visit to Nagpur, Sule also paid her respects to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Deekshabhoomi.

NCP-SP leader Supriya Sule dismisses RSS' call for changes to Constitution's Preamble

NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Saturday called the Indian Constitution a product of extensive debate and asserted that nobody would be allowed to alter it. Sule said that in a democracy, everybody has the right to speak.(PTI) The Lok Sabha MP from Baramati was addressing a press conference in Nagpur. To a query about RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale's recent call for reviewing the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the preamble of the Constitution, Sule said that in a democracy, everybody has the right to speak. 'He said what he felt,' said Sule. Addressing an event on the 50 years of the Emergency, Hosabale had said, 'The preamble of the Constitution Baba Saheb Ambedkar made never had these words (socialist and secular). During the Emergency, when fundamental rights were suspended, Parliament did not work, the judiciary became lame, then these words were added.' Sule said such controversies remind her of late former BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who used to say that if 'you (media)' stopped spotlighting these incidents, people wouldn't talk about them. 'The Constitution is the result of much discussion and deliberation. We will not let anyone change the Constitution in this country,' she said. Asked about the raging controversy over Hindi for students in primary school, Sule asked, 'Is Hindi compulsory in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh or Telangana? When Hindi is not compulsory everywhere, then why is it being made mandatory in Maharashtra?' The language row erupted after the state government last week issued an amended order stating Hindi will 'generally' be taught as the third language to students in Marathi and English medium schools from Classes 1 to 5. According to the order, if 20 students per grade in a school wish to study any other Indian language, they can opt out of Hindi. If such a demand arises, either a teacher will be appointed, or the language will be taught online. Opposition parties, however, dubbed the move a default imposition of Hindi as a third language.

Sule says Shaktipeeth will hit state finances

1 2 3 4 Mumbai: A few days after the state cabinet approved the Rs 20,787 crore Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth highway, NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule has stepped into the row over the project, saying the cash-starved state govt will not be able to afford the massive expenditure on the proposal. "State govt must give a serious thought to the huge expenditure on the project, particularly in view of the critical financial situation of the state. It will take several decades to restore the situation. It will have a massive impact on the Marathi people," Sule said. Sule referred to a series of reports in a section of the media, saying there is strong opposition to the project from all sections. "When our financial situation is very bad, still we are in the process of securing a loan of Rs 30,000 crore, with an interest of 8.85%, it is beyond the financial capacity of the state to afford such a high interest," Sule said. Sule said that at a juncture when the state govt has failed to release the salaries of its own employees, while there is acute shortage of funds for water mission projects, the govt has secured huge loans for a project which has been opposed in all sections. "A corridor is being planned from central India to Goa's port to help favoured industrialists export their raw materials abroad. This is a red-carpet project exclusively for them," Sapkal said. Sapkal said that while an allocation of Rs 20,000 crore has been made, the expenditure could go up to Rs 1.5 lakh crore and is a ploy for corrupt profiteering. "This is the beginning of pushing Maharashtra towards bankruptcy, since the debt burden has cross the mark of Rs 9.82 lakh crore," he said.

MPs demand restoration of original Pune-Nashik high-speed rail route

Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Pune region representing the Nationalist Congress Party/NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) have demanded that the originally proposed route for the Pune-Nashik high-speed railway project be retained while raising concerns over the decision to change the alignment due to the presence of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Khodad, Junnar taluka. Citing global examples of coexistence between railway and radio telescope facilities in Germany, the US, Australia, and South Africa, the MPs have questioned why the GMRT project should pose an obstacle to the rail line in India. The meeting saw the participation of MPs Supriya Sule, Shrirang Barne, Omprakash Nimbalkar, Dhairyasheel Mohite-Patil, Dr Amol Kolhe, Bhausaheb Waghchaure, Nilesh Lanke, Vishal Patil, Rajani Patil, Nitin Jadhav-Patil, Shivaji Kalge, Maya Narolia and Dr Medha Kulkarni. (HT) The issue was discussed during a meeting held on Monday under the chairmanship of Central Railway (CR) general manager Dharamveer Meena, with principal department heads and divisional railway managers of Pune and Solapur also present. The meeting saw the participation of MPs Supriya Sule, Shrirang Barne, Omprakash Nimbalkar, Dhairyasheel Mohite-Patil, Dr Amol Kolhe, Bhausaheb Waghchaure, Nilesh Lanke, Vishal Patil, Rajani Patil, Nitin Jadhav-Patil, Shivaji Kalge, Maya Narolia and Dr Medha Kulkarni. During the meeting, Sule was unanimously elected as the chairperson of the railway coordination committee. The originally proposed route for the Pune-Nashik high-speed railway project passed through Khodad in Junnar taluka which is home to Asia's largest radio telescope, the GMRT. However, union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently stated that the rail line would no longer pass through this region due to potential interference with the scientific facility. As a result, a new alignment of Pune – Ahilya Nagar – Shirdi – Nashik is currently under consideration with a detailed project report (DPR) being prepared for the same. However, the MPs urged reconsideration, stating that GMRT officials are not opposed to the project itself but have only raised concerns regarding technical safeguards. 'It is possible to design the route to either go underground or on elevated tracks near the GMRT. The land acquisition has already been completed in parts of Nashik, Sinnar and Shirdi and the rail line holds great significance for both farmers and industrial workers. The railway should revise the earlier DPR and proceed with the original alignment, which is both practical and beneficial,' said Dr Kolhe. Meanwhile during the meeting, Rajya Sabha (RS) MP Dr Kulkarni proposed renaming Pune Railway Station after the Maratha Empire's legendary leader, Shrimant Thorale Bajirao Peshwe. She stated that while Pune boasts a rich historical heritage, there is no visible reflection of its past at the city's main railway station. 'Pune station should reflect the country's legacy just as other railway stations and airports across India do,' Kulkarni said.
