Wellington (New Zealand): Rob Walter has been hired to coach the New Zealand men's cricket team in all three formats as a replacement for Gary Stead.
Walter coached South Africa's teams in the one-day and Twenty20 formats from January 2023 until April this year. Before then he coached New Zealand's Otago province for five years and at the Central Districts association.
He guided South Africa to the semifinals of the 2023 World Cup and the Champions Trophy earlier this year in the ODI format and to the final of the T20 World Cup last year.
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
Stead was New Zealand head coach in all three formats from 2018 until earlier this week, when New Zealand Cricket announced it was seeking a replacement.
Stead announced in March he was stepping down from his roles in the limited-overs formats but intended to remain as test coach. New Zealand Cricket said it preferred a coach to lead the Black Caps in all three formats.
'It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series will be contested,' Walter said. 'I just can't wait to get started. It's exciting, it's challenging and the opportunity is enormous.' The 49-year-old Walter was high on New Zealand Cricket's list of preferred candidates from the moment it decided to pursue another all-formats coach, ruling out Stead who guided the Black Caps to the inaugural World Test Championship.
'Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree,' NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said. 'His success in New Zealand's domestic game combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with South Africa makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps.' He'll take over in time for New Zealand's tour to Zimbabwe, which starts with a T20 tri-series against the hosts and South Africa before a two-Test series against Zimbabwe.

WTC Points Table Updated: India Hold England In 4th Test Thriller To Stay In Top Four

In a dramatic turn of events at Old Trafford, Manchester, Team India scripted a remarkable comeback to draw the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 against England. Trailing by 311 runs in the second innings and reduced to 0/2 early on, the Shubman Gill-led side delivered a stunning rearguard action that not only denied England a third win in the series but also preserved India's hopes in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. The match ended with India at 425/4 in 143 overs—an effort built on remarkable centuries from Gill (103), Ravindra Jadeja (107*), and Washington Sundar (101*). With the series scoreline still reading 2-1 in England's favor, the finale at The Oval now promises to be a blockbuster. Gill Leads the Charge with Fourth Century of the Series Shubman Gill's sublime form continued as he notched up his fourth century of the series—matching the second-most centuries by an Indian in a single Test series. His composed knock of 103 off 238 deliveries held the innings together after the early dismissals of openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan for ducks. Gill's 174-run partnership with KL Rahul laid the platform for India's resistance. Rahul fell short of a century but his gritty 90 off 230 balls was vital in blunting England's attack on a worn-out pitch. The innings showcased Gill's growing stature as a dependable anchor under pressure. Jadeja and Sundar's Match-Saving Marathon Promoted to No. 5 for the first time in his Test career, Washington Sundar responded with maturity well beyond his years. Alongside Jadeja, he formed an unbroken 203-run partnership that spanned over two sessions on the final day. Jadeja, batting with typical calm and resilience, remained unbeaten on 107, while Sundar compiled his maiden Test century—an unbeaten 101 off 206 balls. The duo's defensive masterclass ensured India walked away with a draw that felt like a win, especially considering their dismal start in the second innings. Ben Stokes Enters Elite Company Despite Fitness Worries England captain Ben Stokes put in a sensational all-round performance, scoring 141 in the first innings and taking a five-wicket haul (5/72) in India's first innings. With this feat, Stokes became only the fourth Englishman to score a century and take five wickets in the same Test. More significantly, Stokes joined Garry Sobers and Jacques Kallis as just the third player in history to score over 7,000 runs and claim 200 Test wickets. However, his fitness remains a concern after he was seen nursing a hamstring issue while bowling on Day 5—a potential blow ahead of the Oval Test. Joe Root Surpasses Ponting to Become Second-Highest Run-Scorer Former England captain Joe Root also etched his name into the history books during the Manchester Test. His elegant 150 helped England reach a commanding 669 in the first innings and pushed his career tally past Ricky Ponting to make him the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket, behind only Sachin Tendulkar. Root now has 38 Test hundreds—proof of his unmatched consistency and class. WTC Standings Unchanged, But Stakes Rise for The Oval Despite the thrilling draw, neither India nor England saw a change in their World Test Championship standings. England stay third due to their two wins and a draw, though a slow over-rate penalty continues to affect their points total. India, meanwhile, remain fourth with one win in the series and a lot to play for. With Australia and Sri Lanka sitting comfortably atop the standings, the Oval Test could prove pivotal in keeping India's WTC 2025-27 campaign alive. A win would level the series and boost India's Points Percentage (PCT), giving them a much-needed lifeline in the championship race.

IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill's historic 4th ton as captain, Ravindra Jadeja's all-round feat at Old Trafford and more

India, led by captain Shubman Gill, batted with great character to secure a hard-fought draw in the fourth test against England on Sunday and keep the series alive going into the final game. After losing two wickets before they had scored a run in their second innings, India batted for over five sessions for the loss of two more wickets to end the final day on 425-4 at Old Trafford. A courageous hundred from Gill — his fourth of the series — and dogged unbeaten centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar gave the home crowd little to cheer on a tough day for England. A closely-fought series remains at 2-1 to England and the hosts must avoid defeat in the final test at the Oval in London, starting on Thursday, to win it. Here are some key stats from a gritty effort at Old Trafford that leaves India hoping, and England a bit frustrated. 1 – Shubman Gill became the first Test captain to record four centuries in an away series. Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar are the only other captains to record four tons in a series. Jacques Kallis, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root and Mohammed Yousuf the only other batters to record the feat in the 21st century. 6/13 – Of the 127 Tests in history where teams batting second have earned a 300+ innings lead, only 13 matches have ended in a draw. India have converted 6 of those matches into draws after conceding 300-plus leads batting first. 417 – KL Rahul and Shubman Gill faced 417 deliveries during their 3rd-wicket stand, the longest recorded partnership by an Indian pair for any wicket in England. 2/40* – Only the second time in 40 Tests in the Bazball era that England have played a drawn Test, following the 2023 Ashes Test also in Manchester (Day 5 washed out). 1 – Ravindra Jadeja became the first Indian to record 1000 runs and 30 wickets in an away country and the third overall after Wilfred Rhodes (in AUS) and Garry Sobers (in ENG). Jadeja is also the first Indian batter to record two centuries at No. 6 or lower in a SENA Test with his second ton in England. 1543 – India have faced the most balls in a match in the World Test Championship. Incidentally, England are the only team to bowl 1500 deliveries (thrice) in a match in the WTC. Lalith Kalidas is a Senior Sub-Editor with the sports team of The Indian Express.
