KOTA KINABALU (July 21): The breathtaking scenery of Pantai Dalit, Tuaran has made it a fan favourite among holidaymakers looking to enjoy the best of Sabah's tropical paradise.
Yesterday, Pantai Dalit once again became the chosen playground for 592 swimmers from 39 countries, vying to qualify for the OCEANMAN World Final Championship 2025 in Dubai, UAE, from December 3rd to 7th, 2025.
This year's edition of OCEANMAN Kota Kinabalu challenged swimmers of all ages and abilities to test their limits against the backdrop of the breathtaking Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu's coastline.
The event featured a range of distances, including the Sprint 2km, 5km, 10km and 500-metre relay race, as well as the OCEANKIDS 500-metre race, catering to swimmers of all levels.
Despite the choppy waves and strong wind conditions on that day, which affected the event's scheduling, the event still proceeded relatively smoothly.
'We wanted all our swimmers to swim and compete under the best sea conditions,' said OCEANMAN Event Director, Azura Zainol Abidin.
'Based on the technical review, we had to decide to change some of the flag timings,' she concluded.
OCEANMAN Kota Kinabalu offered a unique and unforgettable experience of swimming in crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush tropical landscapes.
'With such strong international representation, I believe OCEANMAN will help propel Sabah's reputation as a leading sports tourism destination in Malaysia,' said Sabah Tourism Board CEO Julinus Jeffrey Jimit.
'As the host venue for 2024 to 2026, we are excited about the potential this event holds for positioning Sabah as a prime destination for sports tourism. And with the event being held in Tuaran instead of the city centre, we are also excited to be able to highlight rural tourism to all the participants,' he added.
Julinus also remarked that the economic impact of events like OCEANMAN cannot be overstated. Sports tourism is a growing segment that attracts high-spending visitors who not only participate in the event but also explore the surrounding areas. By hosting this prestigious series, STB is positioning Sabah as a destination for active travellers who seek meaningful, adventure-filled experiences.
The OCEANMAN World Series event is the largest open-water event in the world. OCEANMAN Kota Kinabalu 2025 is organised by Tough Gorilla Ventures with support from the Sabah Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia and Shangri-la Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu as the co-sponsors.
The top 10 swimmers in every age group, as well as the top three from the Inspiration category, will get a qualification slot for the OCEANMAN World Final in OCEANMAN, Half OCEANMAN, and Sprint distances.

University College Sabah Foundation, Sabah Birdwatchers Association ink birding certification module

Kota Kinabalu: A new birding certification module is now in place following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) and the Sabah Birdwatchers Association (SBA). State Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister cum Sabah Tourism Board Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the introduction of the module is timely, as birdwatching is fast becoming a promising segment in Sabah's tourism landscape. 'According to birding experts, the UK alone has around six million active birders, while the number across Europe is estimated to be close to 10 million 'If we can attract even one per cent of that market, it would be a strong start for Sabah,' he said after witnessing the signing ceremony, on Wednesday. 'The figures show clear potential and that Sabah is moving in the right direction to tap into this growing niche,' he added. UCSF Vice-Chancellor Datuk Dr Rafiq Idris and Sabah Birdwatchers Association president Ronald Pudin signed the MoU, which also marked the launch of the module titled 'Discover the Birds of Borneo: Sabah's Feathered Jewel', which aims to train and certify local birding enthusiasts and tour guides. Supported by the STB, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to develop birdwatching into a structured and sustainable nature-based tourism product. Joniston said this reflects a shared commitment to strengthen eco-tourism while creating job opportunities and boosting rural economies through birdwatchers who tend to spend more, stay longer, and visit lesser-known areas. 'I hope that the module will encourage more rural youth to explore birding and gain valuable skills that could lead to meaningful livelihood opportunities. 'By training locals to become bird guides, we are helping them discover new income streams and encouraging long-term stewardship of the environment. 'When communities see value in protecting their forests and wetlands, they are more likely to participate in conservation efforts, and that's the kind of sustainable tourism we want to encourage,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Milan wins crash-marred sprint at Tour de France

Italy's Jonathan Milan extended his lead in the sprint points race following today's Stage 17 win. (AP pic) VALENCE : Italy's Jonathan Milan won a crash-marred finale to Stage 17 of the Tour de France in lashing rain today, extending his lead in the sprint points race. Overall leader Tadej Pogacar and his closest rival Jonas Vingegaard finished safely despite a mass fall 800m from the finish line at Valence at the foot of the Alps. On the rain-slick roads at Valence once one rider had fallen his interminable slide across the tarmac sent riders flying like skittles leaving only 10 to contest the sprint. This was a second stage win for Milan, who won Italy's first stage since 2019 on Stage 8. The 24-year-old Lidl Trek rider now has 312 points, and is in a powerful position to win the battle for the green jersey in Paris as Pogacar is second at 240 with only two possible sprints left at 50 points each. As the remaining 164 riders embarked from the sleepy Provence village of Bollene, the collective will of the peloton made for a slow approach of the Alps. Billed as a sprinters stage on an unusually mild (22°C) day the riders were also spared the 50kph winds that had been forecast. But the rain deprived the stage a full bunch sprint due to the horrid fall. The three massive climbs culminating with the ascent to the 2304m altitude Col de la Loze on Stage 18 will sort the wheat from the chaff on tomorrow's Queen stage. While Friday's hellishly designed five mountains of madness on Stage 19 sound the final call for any pretender to knock Pogacar off his high perch. Unless that is the three ascents of the cobbled roads to the Sacre Coeur Basilica in old Montmartre descend into chaos on Sunday.
