South Africa's fashion industry, traditionally synonymous with the event, will showcase the work of professional designers and upcoming talent at the Durban July Fashion Experience
Tens of thousands of horse racing punters, fashionistas, foodies and other visitors who descend on eThekwini to party at the Hollywoodbets Durban July this weekend are expected to contribute around R700 million to the city's GDP.
Africa's largest horseracing event, themed Marvels of Mzansi, is expected to generate significant economic activity and create 4 000 jobs, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba said at the launch of the event at Westown Square in Shongweni.
Xaba said the city's tourism and hospitality sectors anticipate an 80% hotel occupancy rate as visitors converge for the horseracing and fashion spectacle, which celebrates South Africa's cultural heritage, diversity and landscapes.
'The direct spend is estimated at R278 million, with a total of R700 million contribution to the eThekwini GDP, and a total number of 4 000 jobs to be created,' Xaba said.
The economic impact will be generated at the racecourse and at side events, including Fact Durban Rocks, Any Given Sunday, Anywhere in the City and Mojo's July Weekend, across the city.
'Our law-enforcement agencies have developed an integrated safety plan, supported by the private security industry. Visitors are guaranteed a safe stay in the city with high police visibility, particularly around the Greyville precinct and other strategic sites across the municipality.'
South Africa's fashion industry, traditionally synonymous with the event, will showcase the work of professional designers and upcoming talent at the Durban July Fashion Experience, a collaboration between the city and the Hollywood Foundation.
Twenty-five designers will present Marvels of Mzansi collections, featuring three categories, including the Young Designers Awards, with 10 student finalists competing for bursaries and a fashion travel package, the Durban Fashion Fair Rising Stars.
Nine emerging designers supported by eThekwini's Fashion Development Programme will vie for a R250 000 business development prize and the Invited Designer Showcase, which will display the collections of six established designers.
Gold Circle sponsorship and marketing executive Steve Marshall
'Its impact on racing is undeniable — it's the most prestigious race in South Africa. It's got a prize of over R5 million and it's the race that every trainer, owner, jockey, crew or breeder wants to win. It's in their dreams,' Marshall said.
Hollywoodbets brand and communications manager Devin Heffer said the event brought together key sectors across the city.
'This race means so much to so many people, not just the racing industry, but everyone is intertwined. All the public, hospitality, tourism, the government, the GDP — everything is affected and infected with July fever,' he said.
Xaba said he was speaking to hospitality stakeholders to enhance visitor experiences and align with future development plans.
The city was investing R600 million annually in bulk infrastructure for catalytic projects, such as the R15 billion Shongweni Development and the R25 billion Sibaya Precinct Development to elevate tourism infrastructure.
'We are also looking into how we can invest more resources including setting aside a budget to improve tourism infrastructure,' Xaba said.
'The Hollywoodbets Durban July is more than a race — it is a catalyst for social cohesion as it unites South Africans through the passion of sport, the expression of cultural pride and the glamour of fashion,' Xaba said.
'We are really looking forward to the 5th of July and we are ready to roll out the red carpet for our visitors because Durban is open for business.'

Michael Owen names Oriental Charm his favourite ahead of Hollywodbets Durban July

Legendary soccer player and current racehorse trainer Michael Owen arrived in the city to engage with fans at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment and share his passion for horse racing. Image: Leon Lestrade/ Independent Newspapers As excitement builds ahead of the Durban July on Saturday, Liverpool legend Michael Owen has named Oriental Charm as the horse he favours, despite Eight on 18 being the official race favourite. Themed 'Marvels of Mzansi', this year's prestigious Durban July horse racing event and fashion extravaganza is expected to attract around 50,000 visitors to Durban, with hotel occupancy forecasted at 80%. According to eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba, the city is set to reap major economic benefits, including a boost of over R700 million to Durban's GDP and the creation of more than 4,000 jobs. Speaking at a media event and fan meet-and-greet at Sibaya Casino Durban on Friday, Owen, who is also Sunbet ambassador, shared his insights ahead of the big race. "Eight on 18 is the favourite, isn't it? That sounds like everybody's keen on it. I actually like the look of the number one horse, Oriental Charm. Charm won it last year and is drawn well — an older, more robust horse compared to the young pretender,' Owen said. He added that while he's still learning about the Durban July, he is excited to experience South Africa's premier horse racing event. Video Player is loading. It excites the nation. Lots of people will be there, the racing is great,' he said. While Owen made his name as a footballer, his passion for horse racing runs deep. At age 22, he founded Manor House Stables in Cheshire, which today manages over 130 horses and has produced numerous international champions. "It's not really been a transition for me because racing has always been my passion outside football. I set up Manor House Stables when I was 22, and now we're training about 130 horses,' he explained. The football legend will be experiencing the event atmosphere for the first time and looks forward to the social and cultural aspects of the event. 'There'll be the fashion and the people and the excitement and the social environment. So, I'm looking forward to seeing what else is great,' he said. Michael Owen's grand gallop: sharing his anticipation for the Hollywoodbets Durban July

Legendary soccer player and current racehorse trainer Michael Owen arrived in the city to engage with fans at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment and share his passion for horse racing. Image: Leon Lestrade/ Independent Newspapers Former football superstar Michael Owen is in South Africa, embracing the vibrant atmosphere of his inaugural Hollywoodbets Durban July. The ex-Liverpool striker is eager to immerse himself in South Africa's most anticipated horse-racing event, although he admits he still hasn't decided what to wear for the occasion. "Independent Media Lifestyle" caught up with the charismatic SunBet ambassador at the Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom, where he expressed his excitement about experiencing the annual racing spectacle that draws attention from across the region. "The first thing I've noticed about the city is that it's very similar to the UK in terms of lots of greenery, trees and land, it was nice to see. We've come in winter so it's a little bit colder than I thought it was going to be, I only brought one top!" Despite the chill, Owen's enthusiasm was unmistakable, especially as he looked forward to the main event. "I'm looking forward to more of the city, and the Durban July is going to be the biggest attraction for me, so I can't wait to see that tomorrow as well." "We've already been to various places. We did an event last night, we've got different dinners, we've got meet and greets with fans, we went to see the training centre (Summerveld Horseracing Clubhouse) this morning, which was exciting, so there are a few things on the agenda over the next few days." Legendary soccer player and current racehorse trainer Michael Owen arrived in the city to engage with fans at Sibaya Casino & Entertainment and share his passion for horse racing. He also signed autographs at a meet-and-greet with fans. Image: Leon Lestrade / Independent Newspapers While fashion often takes centre stage at the Hollywoodbets Durban July, Owen appears more keen to appreciate the full experience. "I'm not really a fashionista, I'm looking forward to the whole day. I love horses and I'm looking forward to seeing the big race, but I like to see everything, and see people enjoying themselves, I may possibly get down with the locals. "That's the good thing about horse racing, there is something in it for everybody, whether you're into fashion or horses, competition or gambling. It's a family event so I'm looking forward to the whole day." His insights into the racing field are great, especially as he brings his perspective from a recent stint at the prestigious Royal Ascot in the UK. "I listened intensely last night, and Eight On Eighteen is the favourite, sounds like everybody is keen on it. I actually like the look of the No.1 horse, Oriental Charm, who won it last year, drawn well, it's an older horse so more robust, I guess, but I'm guessing." "I'm interested in seeing what the differences are. I've just come off the back of doing five days of Royal Ascot, which is our showpiece in the UK. We've got a lot of festivals, but I think Royal Ascot is the one we're most proud of and I'm told that the Durban July is the big one over here that excites the nation. "I've seen some of the best horse racing events in the world, and obviously this will be different, but it will be amazing in your own way, which is the beauty of going to different countries and seeing how each country does it." "Lots of people will be there, the racing is great and I'm looking forward to seeing what else is great. There'll be the fashion, people and the excitement and the social environment so looking forward to seeing it.

Hollywoodbets Durban July: meet the first black horse racing announcer in isiZulu on TV

When it comes to South Africa's black pioneers, the name Sanele Mchunu now stands alongside the greats from Comrades Marathon champion Sam Tshabalala, to Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, and music star Khaya Mthethwa. Hailing from Mpophomeni in Howick, Mchunu has carved out his own place in history as the first black person to announce horse races in isiZulu on national television. The 41-year-old, who now lives in KwaNyuswa near Pinetown, was hired by Race Coast and on Saturday July 5 takes to the mic at the prestigious Hollywoodbets Durban July, a moment that marks both personal triumph and a step forward for representation in the horse racing industry. Speaking to Isolezwe, Mchunu reflected on the opportunity that came his way in 2023, when Hollywoodbets sought to revitalise horse racing by making it more accessible to a broader audience. 'I was challenged to announce the races in isiZulu something I'd never even dreamed of,' he said. 'But I grabbed the opportunity with both hands.' Since then, Mchunu has become a regular voice in the sport and hopes his role will open doors for others. 'Even after Smanga Khumalo's historic Durban July win, there's still only one Black horse trainer in the country,' he said. 'This is an industry with huge employment potential, and it's time more Black South Africans got involved - not just at major events like the Durban July, but throughout the year.' Mchunu's journey began in the classrooms of KwaMqhathi Primary in KwaMpande, before moving to KwaNyuswa's St Lawrence Primary and later completing matric at Khabazela High School in Embo. He went on to study Video Technology at what is now the Durban University of Technology. His professional media career began in 2006 as a video editor at the SABC, followed by stints at SuperSport TV and, eventually, Gallop TV under where he now works as a studio producer. While he hasn't yet married, Mchunu is a proud father of three and continues to make strides, not only for himself, but for the next generation of broadcasters, sports enthusiasts, and horse racing professionals.
