Legal foundation key to Sarawak–federal talks on Petronas-Petros, says Deputy Premier

Borneo Post09-05-2025
Dr Sim points out that the issue of oil and gas sovereignty involves what he described as 'Sarawak's big money for the next 100 years', and that the rule of law will determine Sarawak's position in this century-long strategic game.
KUCHING (May 9): The ongoing negotiations between the Sarawak government, the federal government, Petronas, and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) hinge critically on establishing a solid legal foundation, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
He pointed out that the issue of oil and gas sovereignty involves what he described as 'Sarawak's big money for the next 100 years', and that the rule of law will determine Sarawak's position in this century-long strategic game.
'This year, the Sarawak government's revenue is RM15.8 billion – equivalent to 15 years of Penang's income or five years of Selangor's. That's the gap,' he said, in a See Hua Daily News report.
He candidly remarked that the agreement currently being negotiated with the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, even if only at a preliminary stage, could already bring Sarawak RM10 billion in cash – an amount that surpasses the total property value of Kuching, Sibu and Miri combined.
He said this was merely 'the initial funding', noting that the real value lies in Sarawak's rich and strategically important natural gas reserves.
'We are the fifth or sixth largest natural gas reserve in the world. This money is not just for now — it is money with far-reaching implications for the next hundred years,' he said when officiating at the Borneo Eco Show 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
Touching on medical research, Dr Sim highlighted that since the establishment of Clinical Research Malaysia in 2012, Sarawak has successfully attracted over RM1.5 billion in medical research investments and created around 3,000 high-paying jobs.
He emphasised that Sarawak now leads the nation in First-in-Human (FIH) clinical trials.
In 2023, Malaysia recorded six such trials – five of which were from Sarawak. Notably, the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) has been recognised by international pharmaceutical giant Roche as the only medical institution in Southeast Asia qualified to conduct cancer clinical trials.
Dr Sim also cited Singapore as an example of what not to blindly follow in urban development.
He shared that during a visit with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to Singapore's Ang Mo Kio area in 2022, they learned that the Singapore government had removed a previously cemented river and restored it to its natural state, as the concrete structure had caused fish and birds to vanish.
'Our drains aren't cemented, not because we're advanced, but because we couldn't afford it. But in the end, we preserved the natural rivers, which turned out to be an advantage,' said Dr Sim.
He stressed that urbanisation should balance sustainability with livability, and mistakes made by others need not be repeated.
With a touch of wit, he added: 'If others have already gotten cut by the knife, we don't need to slash ourselves again.' Dr Sim Kui Hian oil and gas Petronas Petros

‘Sadia takes lead in Iban culture, language preservation'

Churchill (sixth right) seen during a ceremony held on stage. Seen from his right are Sadia Kuching chairman Peter Moni Selat and the event's organising chairman Anthony Tukang. KUCHING (July 6): Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia) is a protagonist when it comes to the preservation of Iban culture and language. In pointing this out, Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) publicity officer Churchill E Drem hailed the two entities as 'tools of the Iban identity, which must be preserved well. 'In this respect, Sadia runs a host of programmes – ranging from the preservation of the 'ngajat' (Iban traditional dance) and language, to addressing issues surrounding NCR (Native Customary Rights) land. 'However, some of the NCR struggles seem controversial and thus, we should let our leaders address and resolve all issues. 'Otherwise, most of Sadia's activities are normal,' he said in representing SDNU president, Pakan assemblyman Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, at Sadia Kuching branch's annual dinner held at Siburan Community Hall near here on Saturday. Talking about Sadia and SDNU, Churchill said they were interlinked, with similar objectives drawn even before the formation of Malaysia in 1963. 'Many Sadia members are also members of the SDNU. 'SDNU was formed in 1956, while Sadia's main body and its Kuching branch, in early 1960s. 'According to some documents that I have come across on the Internet, Sadia was sort of the rebranding of the Dayak Federation formed in 1919.' Adding on, Churchill said in the early 1980s, Sadia set out to address issues involving the well-being and economy of the Ibans, particularly those who migrated from the rural to urban areas like Kuching. In this sense, he remarked: 'Whoever leads Sadia should revisit these two main objectives: addressing the well-being of the Iban people, and elevating their economy. 'They (leaders) must ensure that all programmes involving the community could be formulated and intensified to suit modern times.' Adding on, Churchill said SDNU and Sadia were still in a situation where they still needed substantial funds from the state government. 'Their (SDNU and Sadia's) strength is their ability to bring people together and instil in them a good sense of belonging. 'This can be seen when you organise or join dinners and events – the Ibans are united people socially,' said Churchill. Later, Churchill announced a RM10,000 grant from Mawan for Sadia Kuching branch.

Crowds flock to final day of Star Education Fair in JB

JOHOR BARU: The Star Education Fair continued to draw crowds on its second day as visitors explored study options and scholarship opportunities. Organised by Star Media Group, the two-day fair features 40 institutions occupying over 55 booths, offering a wide range of programmes and consultations. Netherlands Maritime University College business development and corporate communications executive Nur Alissa Mae said visitors from Indonesia and Singapore also came to her booth during the fair here. "Most enquiries this time were from postgraduate prospects, particularly those interested in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. 'Perhaps because the education fair is held alongside a job fair, many diploma and degree holders came to explore postgraduate options. "They're looking at the MBA as a way to support their career growth or transition to a different company,' she added. Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) Computing and Informatics senior lecturer Dr Lim Kok Cheng said that among the courses that attracted the most attention during the fair was its newly introduced Master's in Artificial Intelligence. 'We've also launched a Master's in Computer Science majoring in AI, and both programmes started their intake this year. 'These are among the most talked-about programmes throughout the two-day fair,' he added. Dr Lim said visitors, especially working professionals and tech-savvy students, were intrigued by the AI offerings and asked detailed questions about the course structure and career prospects. Management and Science University (MSU) academic councillor and lecturer Adly Zaihardi Muhamad Said said the university received strong interest from both working adults and fresh graduates during the fair. 'The response has been encouraging. Many working adults looking to further their studies dropped by to enquire about postgraduate options, especially master's and PhD programmes,' he said when met at the fair at the Persada International Convention Centre here. He said MSU offers over 140 programmes, with more than 20 at the postgraduate level, including those delivered in a blended format that combines monthly physical classes with online learning. Lincoln University College marketing executive P. Harshinni said the institution offers over 160 programmes ranging from foundation to PhD levels. She added that the university's Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme is currently one of the most popular, especially among working adults. 'We're offering the full MBA course at RM10,000, which can be completed within one to two years via online distance learning. "The offer is valid until the end of this year,' she said. Akademi Laut Malaysia (Alam) business and management faculty head Dr A. Ramesh Babu said the academy received a fair number of enquiries from visitors interested in maritime-related careers. 'Alam offers seven diploma programmes tailored for both seafaring and shore-based careers. "Students who are keen to work on board ships can opt for diplomas in Marine Engineering, Nautical Studies or Marine Electro-Technology, while those interested in shore-based roles can choose from Maritime Business Administration, Maritime Management, Maritime Services, or Maritime Transportation and Logistics. 'We also offer more than 100 short courses tailored for the marine industry, ranging from five days to six months,' he said. Ramesh said demand for these short courses has increased, with the Diploma in Maritime Transportation and Logistics and Diploma in Maritime Management being the most sought-after. Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) programme promotion division assistant manager Chin Kok Keong said the university offers a wide range of programmes, from foundation to postgraduate studies. 'We have courses in medical studies, engineering, IT, arts and social sciences. There's a good balance across faculties, and each programme has its own unique teaching style,' he said. He added that UTAR offers achievement-based scholarships to eligible SPM and STPM school-leavers. 'Our university is also one of the most affordable, and our graduates have a marketability rate of between 95% and 97%,' he said. Universiti Malaya marketing centre assistant registrar Mohd Hazyq Askyel Mohd Fuad said most visitors to their booth were interested in the university's foundation and undergraduate programmes. 'Most enquiries were about our foundation and bachelor's degree programmes. "We're hoping for a larger crowd as the foundation application deadline is closing in about a week,' he said. He added that Universiti Malaya offers on-the-spot offer letters and direct intake, which many students were not aware of prior to the fair. 'We managed to issue several immediate offer letters today, and it was a pleasant surprise for many visitors,' he said. The fair, which is being till Sunday (July 6), runs between 11am and 6pm at the Persada International Convention Centre here. The Star Education Fair, now in its 38th year, is one of the country's pioneer education exhibitions. For more details on the Star Education Fair, visit or email edufair@
