Thousands to join Bangladesh rallies, concerts one year after Hasina's ouster
The events will culminate in a declaration touted as a roadmap for democratic reform in the political journey from an uprising sparked by economic woes and repression to rule by an interim government led by Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus.
"Together, we will build a Bangladesh where tyranny will never rise again," Yunus said in a message to the nation a year after protests forced Hasina to flee to neighbouring India, as he paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives.
A peaceful, fair, and transparent election could be held early next year, Yunus said, pledging a return to full democratic rule at a time of mounting pressure for a swifter transition amid growing labour unrest.
"Fallen autocrats and their self-serving allies remain active," however, he added, urging unity to protect the gains of the uprising while his government holds reform talks with political parties and civil society.
His interim government had launched sweeping reforms, he added, while trials for those responsible for the "July killings" were progressing swiftly.
Police were on high alert throughout the capital, with armoured vehicles patrolling the streets to deter any attempt by Hasina's banned Awami League to disrupt the day's events.
"Let this anniversary not be a day of retrospection, but a rallying cry for a brighter tomorrow," Hasina said in an open letter to the people of Bangladesh, adding that she had never resigned from her duties as prime minister.
"Bangladesh has overcome adversity before, and we will rise again, stronger, more united, and more determined to build a democracy that truly serves its people."
The July Declaration, to be announced later in the day by Yunus, will formally recognise the 2024 student-led uprising and the shift away from authoritarian rule to democratic renewal.
Despite some opposition, it is backed by major political groups, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by former premier Khaleda Zia.
Supporters see the charter as a foundation for institutional reform, critics have warned its impact could be largely symbolic in the absence of a legal framework or parliamentary consensus.

India: PM Modi announces free e-visas to Filipinos during Marcos' visit
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that India will be offering free e-visas to Filipino tourists, in a reciprocal move following the Philippines' decision to grant visa-free entry to Indian nationals. The announcement came during a joint press statement by Modi and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who is currently on a five-day state visit to the country. During the event, both leaders agreed to enhance people-to-people ties and connectivity further. "We welcome the decision of the Philippines to grant visa-free entry to Indian tourists. India, in turn, has decided to extend the facility of free e-visas to tourists from the Philippines. Efforts will also be made to launch direct flights between Delhi and Manila within this year," PM Modi said. President Marcos highlighted the Philippines' recent visa-free policy for Indian citizens and thanking India for the reciprocal gesture. "I reiterated our introduction of visa-free entry privileges and extended our invitation for more Indian tourists to visit the Philippines. I thank Prime Minister Modi in turn for the introduction of a scheme to grant visas free of charge to Filipino tourists travelling to India. We welcome the resumption of direct flights from October this year and have renewed our commitment to sustaining and expanding such direct air connectivity," he stated. The Ministry of External Affairs also announced direct flights from Delhi to Manila, expected to commence operations from October 1 this year, in a significant step towards enhancing regional connectivity between India and the Philippines. PM Modi also expressed gratitude to the Philippines for strongly condemning the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam. "We welcome the Philippines' decision to join the International Fusion Centre established by India for the Indian Ocean Region. We express our sincere gratitude to the Government of the Philippines and to the President for strongly condemning the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and for standing with us in our fight against terrorism," the Prime Minister stated. President Marcos conveyed the solidarity of the Filipino people with India in the wake of the Pahalgam attack and reiterated the Philippines' firm stance against terrorism. "As emissaries of our people, I bring with me the enduring friendship of the Filipino nation. I carry the message of our solidarity with India, both over the tragic attack in Pahalgam earlier this year and in the broader fight against terrorism," President Marcos stated. This visit also marks a historic moment in India-Philippines relations, as the two countries announced the elevation of their ties to a Strategic Partnership as they celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations. Following their meeting, both leaders declared 13 wide-ranging agreements, with key pacts spanning defence, security, science and technology, tourism, digital cooperation, maritime collaboration, and cultural exchange. A statement of Intent was also exchanged between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Philippine Space Agency, focused on collaboration in the peaceful uses of outer space.

Former Israeli PM Bennett says Israel is seen as a 'leper state' in US
Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a lengthy post on X on Tuesday that Israel's reputation in the US is 'in collapse'. Bennett, who served as prime minister from 2021 to 2022 for the New Right Party, launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the far-right Likud Party, accusing them of turning Israel into 'a leper state'. Bennet said Netanyahu's government has fanned the flames of the worst antisemitism he has seen in the US and is mismanaging public relations for Israel. His comments come after spending 10 days in the US, including New York and Washington, DC, among other places. He said Jews were being 'blamed for America's troubles, especially its economic problems' on both sides of the political spectrum, and that he had never seen such a 'murky wave of antisemitism' in his lifetime, adding that Israel had lost support from both the Democratic and Republican parties. 'The 'starvation' campaign in Gaza has taken on enormous proportions, and in fact, for most of the American public and various influencers, it is almost a fact,' he lamented. Bennet also took a swipe at government ministers Amichai Eliyahu, Bezalel Smotrich, and Nissim Vaturri, calling them 'barbaric' and saying they had caused Israel 'unimaginable damage with devastating quotes that will haunt our soldiers in the queue for passports in countries around the world'. 'Do you really think that what you say in interviews in Israel isn't absorbed abroad?!' he said. 'Don't you care that you will bring about the prosecution of our soldiers? To tie our hands in war? To boycott our economy, to science?' he continued, mentioning the threats that holders of Israeli passports with a military background may face at international borders. Once again, he laid Israel's reputational damage at the feet of propagandists, saying, 'If Netanyahu's propagandists were operating against Israel's enemies *from outside* with a tenth of the skill, speed, and dedication with which they operate, the propaganda machine against their political opponents *inside* Israel, our situation would be incredible'.
