100% I.D. scan begins June 1 on Fort Benning
'It means that every single person who is coming through an access control point. We will be able to positively identify them,' says Fort Benning Access Control Chief Matthew Dillion.
Dillion tells WRBL this differs from the Trusted Traveler Program.
He says, 'a Trusted Traveler could come through, scan their I.D. and they were vouching for the people that were in their vehicle. Now when they come through, they're still the trusted traveler. There's no change to that. The only difference is where a trusted traveler used to vouch for everybody. Now we're at 100% I.D. and everybody.'
The 100% scan is usually implemented only at night Dillion says. Starting Sunday, Fort Benning's Commander Major General Colin Tooley will require 100% I.D. checks at all gates 24/7.
Dillion says, there are other ways to get on the army post without scanning your I.D. at the gate.
'The first way is to go to a visitor control center,' Dillion explains. 'We're one of the few installations that has one that's open 24 hours… On the other side, you can go online. We have an online system where you can actually process for a pass specifically to their event.'
Dillion says these processes allow for security to conduct background checks on every person coming in.
Wednesday through Fridays Fort Benning see's higher levels of traffic due to family days and graduations Dillion says.
Prior to getting to the access gate, Dillion encourages having your ID ready for a quick and smooth entry onto the military post.
He says people who have been previously denied or barred, have active warrants and other things of that nature will be denied access.
For those who have yet to get their Real I.D., Dillion says additional documentation may be needed to gain access. He says this can be handled in the lane or be sent to the visitor control center.
Dillion says once it's taken care, it will no longer be an issue the next time you get checked at the checkpoint.

Australia commits to more food, medical aid for Gaza
Australia has pledged an extra $20 million in humanitarian aid for women and children in war-torn Gaza after more than 100,000 people turned out in protest across the country to protest the suffering in the besieged enclave. The funding will go to organisations able to deliver desperately needed food, medical supplies and other lifesaving support, the federal government said in a statement on Sunday. The new package of support includes $6 million for the United Nations World Food Program for the provision and distribution of food supplies and $5 million for UNICEF for nutritional support for children at risk of starvation. The International Committee of the Red Cross will also receive $5 million to help those in Gaza meet essential needs, including access to health care. An additional $2 million for relief support with the UK will be donated through an existing partnership arrangement, while $2 million will go to the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation to provide medical supplies to support the operation of field hospitals in Gaza. Australia has so far committed $130 million in humanitarian assistance to help civilians in Gaza and Lebanon since October 7, 2023. But the federal government has been criticised for not doing enough in addressing what the UN has described as worsening famine conditions in Gaza. About 90,000 people turned the Sydney Harbour Bridge into a sea of Palestinian flags on Sunday while tens of thousands more held similar protest in Melbourne and Adelaide ins support of Gaza. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia has "consistently been part of the international call on Israel to allow a full and immediate resumption of aid to Gaza". Gaza's health ministry says 60,000 people have been killed during Israel's counteroffensive. Israel has restricted food and medical supplies from entering Gaza, where it controls all entry points, to put pressure on Hamas. International pressure is mounting on the nation state to let in more humanitarian aid, as deaths attributed to malnutrition rise. Israel denies there is starvation in the besieged strip despite international human rights groups branding Israel's offensive in Gaza a genocide and attributing deaths to starvation.

Cavern officials say even though they find more and more modern-day trash, sometimes they stumble across historic trash like a Coca-Cola bottle that made it to the top of a rock far off the main corridor trail. What is guano and why was it a hot commodity in Carlsbad? Officials say the shape of this type of bottle is called a 'hobble-skirt,' which Coca-Cola started using in the year 1915. The bottle has the word 'Carlsbad' embossed at the bottom of the bottle, meaning this bottle was fabricated near the cave. This is not the first run-in with trash cavern staff have come across. In September 2024, an empty bag of Cheetos caused an uproar. Cavern officials say this small piece of trash has a big impact on the cavern; it can become a host for algae and mold. Deadly crash on I-15 near Carmel Mountain Ranch prompts lane closure
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A major crash thwarted traffic on southbound Interstate 15 near Carmel Mountain Ranch on Sunday morning, prompting a temporary lane closure and leaving at least one person dead, authorities said. According to California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred just before 9 a.m. near Camino del Norte and involved four vehicles. Initial reports indicated that three vehicles were involved in a crash in the carpool lane when a fourth vehicle collided with one of the already-disabled cars. The impact contributed to the severity of the incident. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP confirmed. Authorities have not confirmed whether that individual is included in the total number of injuries, which may be as high as nine. The crash led to significant traffic delays as the carpool lane was temporarily closed near Carmel Mountain Road from around 9 a.m. until noon. The lane have since reopened to motorists.
