Swachh test nearing, Noida plans to clear 5 lakh tonnes of waste
Noida: Noida Authority — which is striving for a 7-star rating in Swachh survey — is planning to dispose of an additional 5 lakh tonnes of legacy waste from its temporary dumping site in Sector 145.
The move will make it one of the city's largest waste remediation projects, with a total of 15 lakh tonnes processed at the site.
Alfa Therm Ltd, which took up the project in Dec 2022, has already processed 10 lakh tonnes of trash. The company initially received a contract for five lakh tonnes through bioremediation and later got an extension to process another five.
A recent drone survey by the public health department revealed that while 69,900sqm had been reclaimed after clearing garbage, about 3.5 lakh tonnes of legacy waste remained at the site.
Apart from this waste, 1,000-1,200 tonnes of fresh municipal garbage is dumped at the landfill daily.

The Authority has devised a two-pronged strategy to complete the clean-up. It plans to extend the existing contract to process 1.5 lakh tonnes and issue a new tender for the remaining two lakh tonnes, along with managing the waste that is collected from households daily. The extension work is estimated to cost Rs 12 crore and will need six months to complete.
The land will be available for development once the waste is completely removed, officials said.
Officials said they were concerned the cleanup process might take a hit during the monsoon. "After one day of rain, the waste remains wet for up to seven days, delaying the disposal process," an official said.
The cleanup is crucial for the city's environmental initiatives. The Authority has partnered with NTPC for torrefied charcoal and Everenviro Resource Management for bio-CNG production. A waste-to-energy plant under construction at Astauli is expected to be operational within a year.

More than seven dams in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts, mainly Kabini, Taraka, Nugu, Suvarnavathi, Chikkahole, Gundal and Uduthorehal dam, which are more than 40 years old, need immediate attention for better maintenance and structural safety. The inability to operate or fully close the sluice gate has wasted about 6 cusecs of water every day. The broken sluice gate of Taraka dam was replaced with a 25-tonne gate 19 years ago. If the government wants to utilise the allocated 284tmcft of water, it should replace all crest gates and strengthen the structure based on the expert committee report. The Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited has approved Rs 32.35 crore for filling up cavities and cracks in the Kabini dam. It has presented a proposal of Rs 88 crore to the Centre to strengthen the dam structures.
