‘Bharat Mata' row: Kerala University Vice-Chancellor rejects Registrar's explanation of attempt to cancel event
The 'Bharat Mata' controversy continues to roil Kerala University with Vice-Chancellor in-charge Mohanan Kunnummal rejecting Registrar K.S. Anil Kumar's explanation on his move to cancel a recent event attended by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the university's Senate Hall.
The Registrar's response, based on a report by the university's Public Relations Officer, maintained that he attempted to cancel the booking of the hall since the organisers of the event had breached the terms and conditions of the agreement by displaying religious symbols, which is prohibited in Senate Hall.
He reportedly added that the organisers, who had signed a contract that stipulated 26 conditions, proceeded to display the controversial portrait and arranged a ritual offering of flowers ('pushparchana') in violation of rules.
'Detailed explanation'
Unconvinced by the Registrar's explanation, Prof. Kunnummal has instructed the official to provide a more detailed explanation regarding the incident, the nature of the complaint filed against the organisers, and why the event was allowed to continue despite the breach of contract. The Vice-Chancellor has also sought clarification on the specific symbols used during the event and whether they were in violation of the university's guidelines. He has also asked for the PRO's report.
He also has issued directions to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, and to strictly adhere to university protocols in future events. The Vice-Chancellor will soon submit a comprehensive report to the Governor, who also serves as the Chancellor of the university.
Left members' response
Meanwhile, the Left-backed Syndicate members reiterated that unlawful activities will not be permitted on the university premises. 'The alleged attempt by the organisers to display RSS-linked symbols in the Senate Hall during the programme organised to mark the anniversary of the Emergency is highly objectionable. Such inappropriate actions led to tension and unrest on the campus,' they said.

A police complaint has been filed against Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, accusing him of making 'unconstitutional, inflammatory and divisive' comments and seeking legal action against him. 'I am filing this complaint in the interest of protecting the sanctity of the Constitution of India and preserving public order and constitutional values as a dutiful citizen of India,' the complainant, Shreedhar MM, a representative of the Youth Congress, said. 'These remarks are not just ideational commentary. They are deliberate, provocative, and dangerous.' The complaint said that Hosabale's speech violated several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and amounted to 'an attempt to marginalize religious communities and promote disharmony'. 'These are not protected political speech,' the complainant wrote. 'They are an incitement to constitutional subversion and fall within the purview of cognizable criminal offenses.' The RSS leader stoked a political controversy last week, when, speaking at an event in Delhi on Thursday, he said, 'During the Emergency, two words, secular and socialist, were added to the Constitution, which were not part of the original Preamble. Later, these words were not removed. Should they remain or not… a debate must happen on this. These two words were not in Dr Ambedkar's Constitution. During the Emergency, the country had no functioning Parliament, no rights, no judiciary and yet these two words were added.' The changes were among those made in the contentious 42nd Amendment, passed in 1976. Citing his speech, the Congress workers sought legal action against Hosabale. 'Such attempts to publicly erode constitutional values must be treated with utmost seriousness and urgency,' the complainant added. 'A clear message must be sent that no one is above the Constitution.'

Today they are aligning with the same Congress party. Jayaprakash ji gave the slogan of Sampoorna Kranti to overthrow the Congress. Lalu was with him then. Now he stands with the Congress that insulted JP," Paswan said. The Hajipur MP also hit out at RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, mocking his promise to bring change in 20 months if elected. "He should first return the land he got in exchange for jobs during his father Lalu Prasad's tenure as railway minister," he said. Paswan recalled his 2020 slogan 'Bihar First, Bihari First' and said it had caused discomfort to many back then. "Now that I'm returning to Bihar, their discomfort has only grown. Every drop of my blood is for Bihar. As long as Chirag Paswan is alive, there is no threat to the Constitution or to reservation," he said, urging voters to re-elect the NDA in Bihar.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday recalled the 'dark chapter of Emergency' imposed 50 years ago and urged citizens to remain vigilant to safeguard the Constitution. In his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio address, the PM quoted three prominent politicians from different ideologies, including two former prime ministers, to showcase how people from all walks had joined hands against imposition of Emergency in 1975. Modi played archival audio recordings of speeches by former prime ministers Morarji Desai and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and former home minister Jagjivan Ram, recounting the atrocities faced by people during the Emergency period. The PM quoted Desai as saying, 'The oppression that happened for two years... reached its peak when Emergency was imposed on people and people were treated inhumanely.' Modi added, 'This is the voice of the former PM of the country, Morarji Bhai Desai, who spoke about the Emergency in a brief but very clear manner.' 'You can imagine what that period was like. Those who imposed Emergency not only murdered our Constitution but also had the intention to keep the judiciary as their slave,' he said.
