Complaint filed against RSS general secretary Hosabale over Preamble remarks
A police complaint has been filed against Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, accusing him of making 'unconstitutional, inflammatory and divisive' comments and seeking legal action against him. The complaint, filed by members of the Karnataka legal cell of the Indian Youth Congress, said that Hosabale's recent comments seeking to remove the terms 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble of the Indian Constitution were an 'attack on the constitutional ethos' and an 'incitement against the nation's founding values'.
The complaint was filed at the Seshadripuram Police Station in Bengaluru on Sunday. While the police acknowledged the receipt of the complaint, no FIR was filed till the time of going to print.
'I am filing this complaint in the interest of protecting the sanctity of the Constitution of India and preserving public order and constitutional values as a dutiful citizen of India,' the complainant, Shreedhar MM, a representative of the Youth Congress, said.
'These remarks are not just ideational commentary. They are deliberate, provocative, and dangerous.'
The complaint said that Hosabale's speech violated several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and amounted to 'an attempt to marginalize religious communities and promote disharmony'.
'These are not protected political speech,' the complainant wrote. 'They are an incitement to constitutional subversion and fall within the purview of cognizable criminal offenses.'
The RSS leader stoked a political controversy last week, when, speaking at an event in Delhi on Thursday, he said, 'During the Emergency, two words, secular and socialist, were added to the Constitution, which were not part of the original Preamble. Later, these words were not removed. Should they remain or not… a debate must happen on this. These two words were not in Dr Ambedkar's Constitution. During the Emergency, the country had no functioning Parliament, no rights, no judiciary and yet these two words were added.'
The changes were among those made in the contentious 42nd Amendment, passed in 1976.
Citing his speech, the Congress workers sought legal action against Hosabale.
'Such attempts to publicly erode constitutional values must be treated with utmost seriousness and urgency,' the complainant added. 'A clear message must be sent that no one is above the Constitution.'

Abu Azmi moves HC for quashing FIRs filed over his remarks on Aurangzeb
MUMBAI: Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Azmi has moved the Bombay high court seeking directions to quash two first information reports (FIR) registered against him in connection with his remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The comments were made when he was questioned by reporters on March 3 during the budget session of the legislative assembly. Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi (PTI) Azmi had said that Aurangzeb was a good administrator, and the country's gross domestic product (GDP) during his regime was 24%, which had attracted the British to India. Aurangzeb did not take a single rupee from the administration, the borders of his kingdom stretched as far as Burma and Afghanistan, and he had Hindu commanders in his army, Azmi had said. The remarks caused an uproar in political circles and two FIRs were registered against Azmi – at Wagle Estate police station on March 3 and at Marine Drive police station on March 7. The complainants alleged that the MLA had hurt religious sentiments as Aurangzeb had destroyed Hindu temples, caused injustice and oppression to the poor and tortured Chhatrapati Shambaji Maharaj. On March 4, Azmi was suspended from the legislative assembly after parliamentary affairs minister Chandrakant Patil moved a resolution. In his plea filed through advocate Mubin Solkar, Azmi said that he had merely expressed his opinion about Aurangzeb based on what he had read, and had never made any derogatory or insulting remarks against Chatrapati Shambaji Maharaj or any other Hindu king. He had responded impromptu to questions posed by reporters and had absolutely no intention to hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus or create any discord between religious groups or communities, he stated in the plea. Azmi further submitted that since some rival political parties were trying to manipulate and exploit his statements to register false FlRs against him, he had sought pre-arrest bail from the sessions court, which was granted on March 11, 2025. The Samajwadi Party MLA urged the high court to quash the FIRs against him and stay the ongoing probes by the Wagle Estate and Marine Drive police stations. The division bench of justices AS Gadkari and Rajesh Patil issued notices on his pleas and scheduled the next hearing after four weeks.

Demanding creation of ‘National Commission for Men', bikers on 16,000-km journey
A group of bikers riding across 20 states on a 16,000-km mission stopped in Chandigarh on Monday with a singular demand: the creation of a National Commission for Men. The campaign, Ride for Men's Commission 2.0, aims to bring national attention to what they describe as growing neglect of men's issues, including mental health, rising male suicides, domestic violence, and the alleged misuse of gender-based laws. The bikers, led by internationally recognised riders Dr Amjadkhan Nadim Shaikh and Sandeep Pawaria, addressed the media at the Chandigarh Press Club. Their second edition of the awareness ride began on May 31 from Faridabad. Riding over 500 km daily, the team is halting in major cities to hold press conferences and public interactions. 'Rain, heat or storm — nothing can stop this mission,' said Dr Shaikh, underscoring the group's resolve despite monsoon disruptions. Pawaria added, 'A Men's Commission must be formed. All are equal, whether man or woman. Yet, men are being disrespected even within their families. This isn't confined to one state; it's a nationwide issue.' The movement is backed by over 40 NGOs across India. Rohit Dogra, a founding member of the Save India Family (Chandigarh chapter), stressed the urgency of institutional action. 'Cruelty against men is three times more than against women. There's a growing gender war in the country, and if the government doesn't act, it will only escalate,' he said. 'We're not against women. We are against gender-biased laws.' Quoting Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law, Dogra asked why men are excluded from its promise in practice. 'The government speaks of equality under Article 15, which prohibits gender-based discrimination, but there is none for men. Article 21 promises life and personal liberty, yet no one cares about men's life or liberty.' The campaign gained national attention following the Atul Subhash case, in which a man from Maharashtra died by suicide in April this year, allegedly after being falsely accused in a domestic violence case. Men's rights groups claim his case reflects the broader misuse of gender-specific laws and the lack of institutional mechanisms to support male victims. On April 19, members of the campaign held a protest at Jantar Mantar, Delhi, calling for urgent policy intervention and recognition of male abuse survivors. Among those supporting the ride is Shalini Ranyal, a biker and podcaster. 'Through my podcast and this ride, I stand equally for both men and women. Women have laws and NGOs; men have almost nothing. That needs to change,' she said. According to Ranyal, 80 to 90 men and women riders have joined the cause so far. The bikers have already travelled through Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Patna, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Goa. Their next stretch includes Jammu, Kargil, Leh, Manali, Shimla, and will conclude with their return to Delhi.
