Heaviest rainfall in 27 years: How Fujairah battled floods on this day, 3 years ago

Khaleej Times4 days ago
Today, three years ago, Fujairah saw unprecedented flooding as residents waded through thigh-deep waters after the emirate experienced the heaviest rainfall in 27 years.
The leaders of the nation came together to battle the unforeseen circumstances, ordering the military to army to support rescue efforts. Around 900 people were rescued after flash floods hit the Northern Emirates, while over 3,897 individuals were placed in temporary shelters in Fujairah and Sharjah.
Following two days of incessant rains, Fujairah's port station recorded 255.2mm of water, the highest in the UAE during July. While the second highest was recorded in Masafi which was 209.7mm and the third highest was noted in Fujairah Airport with 187.9mm of rain.
It wreaked havoc on infrastructure, leaving residents stranded, as they headed to hotels — many of which had hiked their prices amid a rise in demand.
In the days that followed, cars could be seen overturned after being swept away by the floods. In the video below, recovery companies can be seen attempting to clear vehicles that had been washed away.
The UAE's Ministry of Interior had said that seven people of Asian descent were confirmed dead in the wake of the floods. In a statement, Brigadier General Dr Ali Salem Al Tunaiji, director-general of the Ministry of Interior Federal Central Operations, said, 'We regret to inform you that six people of Asian nationalities have been found dead due to the floods in the Emirates.'
'The Ministry of Interior offers its condolences to the families of the victims,' he added.

UAE weather tomorrow: temperatures to reach high of 47°C in Dubai; chance of rain

As the weekend kicks off in the UAE, residents can expect fair to partly cloudy skies on Saturday, August 2, as per the daily weather forecast issued by the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). However, there will be a chance of some convective cloud formation eastward and southward, associated with rainfall in some parts of the country. Temperatures will reach a high of 45°C and 47°C in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, respectively. On Friday, the mercury rose to a sweltering record of 51.8°C in Al Ain's Sweihan as peak summer heat intensified. Residents are urged to avoid direct sunlight and drink a lot of water as the hottest phase of summer is expected to end on August 10. Conditions will turn humid by night and Sunday morning over some western coastal and internal areas, with a probability of fog or mist formation. Light to moderate southeasterly to northeasterly winds are expected, freshening at times during daytime, causing blowing dust, with a speed of 10 to 25kmph, reaching 40kmph. The sea will be slight in the Arabian Gulf and slight to moderate at times in the Oman Sea.

Watch: Hail, rain lash some parts of UAE while others endure sweltering heat

While temperatures have hit a high of 51.8 in the UAE today, residents in some parts of the country have been enjoying the respite of sudden showers, and even hail. The NCM sent out an alert on Friday afternoon, and rain chasers have been sharing videos of heavy showers, wet roads in Al Ain. UAE's National Centre of Meterology sent out orange and yellow alerts for Al Ain and surrounding areas, warning residents of heavy showers and hazardous weather conditions if they choose to step outdoors. #Rain#NCM — اÙÙرÙز اÙÙØ·ÙÙ ÙÙأرصاد (@ncmuae) August 1, 2025 Abu Dhabi too sent out a warning, urging residents to take note of bad weather and be prepared accordingly. "Abu Dhabi Civil Defence urges caution due to fluctuating rainy weather conditions, and calls on everyone to take precautions during rainfall and avoid areas with flowing wadis and water accumulation," they said in a post on X. Rain chasers in the country have shared videos of hail in parts of Al Ain. Some videos showed heavy showers on Al Hair Nahel road, north of Al Ain. UAE temperatures rose to its highest level so far this year on Friday, August 1, with the mercury soaring to a sweltering 51.8°C, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) said. The mercury rose to this record threshold in Al Ain's Sweihan at 3pm, it added. Long before summer peaked in the UAE, temperatures soared to a scorching 51.6°C on May 24 also in the desert region of Sweihan, which is known for its hot, hyper‑arid climate.

UAE weather: Temperatures hit 51.8°C after dust alert issued

A yellow alert was issued due to high levels of dust as temperatures approached 52°C in parts of the UAE on Friday. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued the dust warning for large areas of the north-east until 7pm. The weather centre said temperatures peaked at 51.8°C in town of Sweihan in Al Ain at 3pm. The mercury surpassed 50°C in four other areas of the country on a scorching afternoon, NCM figures revealed. The sizzling conditions are nothing new for Sweihan, which once claimed the mantle of the hottest place on Earth after temperatures reached the same 51.8°C on June 6, 2021. Al Ain and Gasyoura were among locations experiencing 49°C heat earlier in the day. Abu Dhabi was expected to hit 45°C on Friday, with 46°C in Dubai. Similar temperatures are forecast across the country over the weekend. Despite the heat, rain is predicted over the weekend, particularly in the south-east. The highest temperature in the UAE this week was 50°C in Owtaid in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi on Monday, according to the NCM centre. This year has also brought the hottest April and May on record. Climate change along with other factors such as El Nino ending have played a significant role, experts say.
