Unemployed man sentenced to death for murder of 3-year-old girl in Langkawi
Justice Evawani Farisyta Mohammad meted out the sentence on Ramlan Abdul Rashid, 44, after finding him guilty of murdering Nur Aisyah Aleya Abdullah at a hospital staff quarters in Langkawi between 9 am and 10 am on Feb 23, 2019, under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
In her written judgment, published on the judiciary's website on July 31, the judge said the victim died from injuries sustained after being beaten and abused by the accused over a prolonged period, an act the court regarded as a grave offence.
"The accused showed no humanity when he disposed of the child's body in a forested area at Gunung Raya, Langkawi, without according it proper rites as required by religion.
"The court also finds that the accused displayed neither remorse nor repentance throughout the trial," she said.
She said evidence from a chemist confirmed that the skull and two teeth found in the said area belonged to the biological daughter of the complainant, who is also the victim's mother.
"The victim was an innocent young child placed in the care of the accused, who, as an adult, should have protected her," she added.
According to the prosecution's case, in November 2018, the victim's mother and her daughter moved into the staff quarters occupied by the accused and his wife, a nurse, and stayed there for about two months.
During that period, the victim's mother left the child in the care of the accused daily while she worked at a food stall.
In January 2019, the accused arranged for the complainant to stay at a hostel provided by her workplace, while the victim remained with him at the staff quarters.
However, in Feb 2019, the victim's mother failed to locate her daughter during a visit to the accused's home and lodged a police report.
The accused claimed he had entrusted the girl to another person but refused to disclose the individual's identity or whereabouts.
Police interrogation led to the discovery of the victim's skull and two teeth in a forested area of Gunung Raya, Langkawi, in March 2019.

Victims only realised their money was missing afterward,' Mohd Alwi explained. All suspects have been remanded for four days until August 6. The case is being investigated under sections 379 and 380 of the Penal Code for theft and sections 6 and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Mohd Alwi urged the public to remain vigilant when dealing with strangers and safeguard their valuables. GEORGE TOWN: Police have crippled a foreign crime syndicate believed to be targeting tourists in popular hotspots around the city with the arrest of five Middle Eastern nationals, including two women, during an operation. Dubbed 'Op Tourist', the operation was launched following three separate police reports lodged between July 30 and Aug 1 involving cash thefts from international tourists in Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang. Acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the victims — tourists from Taiwan, the Netherlands and Syria, aged between 29 and 52 — had reported being approached by people posing as fellow tourists or friendly locals who engaged them in casual conversation. "During the exchange, the suspects allegedly coaxed the victims into revealing the cash in their possession before discreetly making off with the money. "A joint team conducted the operation at Gurney Plaza. "As a result of the operation yesterday, police arrested three men and two women, aged between 19 and 35, all of whom are Middle Eastern nationals," he said in a statement today. Clerk loses over RM277,580 in online job scam in Muar
MUAR: A female clerk lost more than RM277,580 of her savings after becoming a victim of an online job scam. Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz reported that the 42-year-old victim was searching for a part-time job online when she clicked on a link and contacted an individual via WhatsApp. "The individual claimed to represent a company named 'HR Hotelrunner'. After the victim shared her personal details, she was added to a WhatsApp group called 'Bookassist Marketing Grp'," he explained in a statement on Sunday (Aug 3). He noted that the victim then communicated with another individual who instructed her to complete several hotel room booking tasks online, requiring her to make upfront payments with her own money. "The victim was promised commissions ranging from 10% to 35% for each task. Initially, she received a return on her first transaction in July, which encouraged her to continue with more tasks," he said. ACP Raiz added that the victim made 44 transactions in total to 13 different bank accounts, amounting to RM277,445. "All these payments were supposedly for completing the assigned tasks. The victim only realised she had been scammed when she was asked to make an additional payment to withdraw her promised returns. "She refused further payments and lodged a police report," he said, noting that the funds were from her personal savings. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of one to ten years, with whipping and a fine upon conviction. "I advise the public to be cautious of any online part-time job offers promising unrealistic returns. Always verify the authenticity of the company or individual before making any transactions. "Additionally, the public is advised to stay updated by following the Commercial Crime Investigation Department's official social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok for the latest scam tactics," he advised.
