Van gift by Japanese Government

Kota Kinabalu: The Government of Japan has provided RM157,733 under its grassroots grant aid to Caring for the Future Malaysia (CFFM) for the purchase of a van to safely transport children to school. Head of the Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu, Yamashita Yoshito, said the grant is part of an international aid scheme aimed at meeting basic human needs, particularly projects that are highly beneficial at the grassroots level and require timely support on humanitarian grounds.
Advertisement 'To date, we have contributed about RM4 million to 38 projects in Sabah, including this one,' he said during the unveiling ceremony of the van at Kampung Lingan Baru here. He said they received the application from CFFM in March 2024 and, after considering various factors including its long-standing record of activities and sound management, they decided to support the application to purchase a van. 'This grant aid is financed by the taxpayers of Japan. Therefore, this special assistance is an expression of the friendship and goodwill of the Japanese people towards the people of Sabah. 'I sincerely hope this grant aid will further strengthen the friendly relationship between Japan and Malaysia, Sabah in particular and that this van will be effectively used for many years to come,' said Yamashita. CFFM President, Saroja Palaniappan, said the generosity demonstrated by the Government of Japan is a powerful reminder of what compassion, trust and international friendship can achieve when we work together. 'For us, it is more than just a vehicle; it is a gift of safety, dignity and hope for the children under our care,' she said. She also thanked the people of Japan for their generosity, which transcends borders and cultures, and has made a lasting impact on the lives of children in Sabah. CFFM is currently home to 15 boys aged between seven and 17. These children come from various rural and underprivileged areas in Sabah. Many are living in poverty, abandoned, neglected, or orphaned, and the centre serves as their primary home, a place of safety, support, and renewed hope. South Korean auto shares dip after Korea-US trade deal
SEOUL: Shares of South Korean automakers Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp fell on Thursday after US President Donald Trump said the US will charge a 15 per cent tariff on imports from South Korea, including autos, as part of a trade deal. Hyundai Motor shares were down two per cent and Kia Corp stock lost 3.3 per cent. The deal reduces US tariffs on South Korean autos from 25 per cent to 15 per cent, the same rate as Japanese car imports. Before Washington imposed 25 per cent auto tariffs in April, there were zero tariffs on most South Korean auto imports under a bilateral trade deal, while there was a 2.5 per cent tariff on Japanese auto imports. The deal removes the 2.5 per cent advantage in tariffs South Korean automakers had enjoyed over Japanese rivals under the Korea-US free trade deal, analysts said.

‘Many still unaware about State-funded insurance scheme'

SANDAKAN: The people of Sabah are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the accident insurance plan fully covered by the state government, to ensure they do not miss out on the benefits of protection in the event of an accident. Karamunting State Assemblyman, Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, stated that this plan has been in effect since May 1, yet many people are still unaware of its existence. This plan really matters, especially for those with lower incomes. They are not required to pay anything, yet they are still covered. 'However, many people are still unaware of this insurance,' he said. He made the statement after visiting the Sandakan branch office of Progressive Insurance Bhd, the insurance company appointed to manage the scheme. George also sought clarification on the application and claims process to assist in facilitating the affairs of heirs eligible to make claims. This plan covers all local residents of Sabah aged between one month and 80 years, with a maximum compensation of RM10,000 for cases of death or permanent disability due to accidents. It also provides a funeral condolence payment of RM500. This scheme will run for three years until April 30, 2028. Compensation should be paid out as soon as 14 days, and no later than 30 days after all the paperwork is submitted. George stated that his service team has recently received several cases indicating that the victims' heirs were unaware of their eligibility to make claims. Barbie designers killed in tragic wrong-way crash on Italian highway

Photos: Mattel/Instagram, Pinterest Beloved Barbie designers Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi were killed in a car crash on July 27 when they collided with a vehicle driving the wrong way. Egidio Ceriano, 82, was driving the wrong way on Italy's Turin-Milan highway when he crashed into the designers' car. According to Italian news outlets, the octogenarian had been driving about 6km in the wrong direction before the accident. Ceriano also died in the crash. There were two other passengers in the designers' car – Amodio Valerio Giurni, who perished, and his wife, Silvia Moramacro, who was hospitalised, according to news reports. Mattel, the company behind Barbie, released a statement on its social media paying tribute to Paglino and Grossi. "The Barbie team is heartbroken by the loss of Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi, two treasured creators and Mattel collaborators who brought joy and artistry to the world of Barbie as Magia2000. "As passionate and talented designers and lifelong collectors, their spirit and love for the brand turned every creation they touched into masterpiece. "Barbie is better because they loved the brand ... Barbie honors their memory with deep gratitide," the statement read.
