‘Many still unaware about State-funded insurance scheme'

SANDAKAN: The people of Sabah are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the accident insurance plan fully covered by the state government, to ensure they do not miss out on the benefits of protection in the event of an accident. Karamunting State Assemblyman, Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, stated that this plan has been in effect since May 1, yet many people are still unaware of its existence. This plan really matters, especially for those with lower incomes. They are not required to pay anything, yet they are still covered. 'However, many people are still unaware of this insurance,' he said. He made the statement after visiting the Sandakan branch office of Progressive Insurance Bhd, the insurance company appointed to manage the scheme. George also sought clarification on the application and claims process to assist in facilitating the affairs of heirs eligible to make claims. This plan covers all local residents of Sabah aged between one month and 80 years, with a maximum compensation of RM10,000 for cases of death or permanent disability due to accidents. It also provides a funeral condolence payment of RM500. This scheme will run for three years until April 30, 2028. Compensation should be paid out as soon as 14 days, and no later than 30 days after all the paperwork is submitted. George stated that his service team has recently received several cases indicating that the victims' heirs were unaware of their eligibility to make claims. Govt spent RM21mil on Madani Raya Celebrations in 2024, 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The federal government spent over RM21 million on organising Madani Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations in 2024 and 2025. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said all costs were fully borne by the federal government as part of its social investment to strengthen public engagement and reinforce the spirit of unity in the Madani framework. He said no financial contributions were received from private entities or government-linked companies (GLCs) for the festivities in either year. "The actual expenditure for the 2024 Madani Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations held in seven states was RM10,050,196.66, with an average of RM1,435,742.38 per state. "For 2025, the total expenditure across seven locations is RM10,928,222.53, averaging RM1,561,174.65 per location," he said. He said this in response to Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN–Kuala Krai) on the expenditure for each open house and Madani Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration programme organised by the government. He said the costs covered essential items such as logistics, public catering and promotional efforts to ensure wide community participation, especially as the events were held on a large scale across multiple states. He said that starting from 2023, the open house celebrations had been expanded nationwide. In contrast, the 2022 event was limited to attendees in the Klang Valley, yet incurred a higher cost of RM11 million. "The open house was part of the government's efforts to strengthen the relationship between the people and leaders through an inclusive, people-friendly approach that reaches all levels of society. "These events are not merely festive celebrations but serve as important platforms to foster national unity, promote harmony and encourage interaction and mutual understanding among Malaysia's multiracial society," he said.

Malaysia approves RM11.62 bln in furniture projects as of March 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,533 furniture projects worth RM11.62 billion have been approved as of March this year, according to Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong. He revealed that 62% of these investments were domestic, while 38% came from foreign sources. The government continues to support the industry through the Market Development Grant (MDG), administered by MATRADE. Eligible companies receive RM25,000 for overseas trade promotions and RM5,000 for local events. Liew noted that 314 furniture firms have benefited from the MDG, with 4,148 applications approved—the highest among all sectors. 'From January 2021 to July 2025, MDG-assisted furniture companies generated RM1.46 billion in export sales,' he said during a Dewan Rakyat session. The grants disbursed to the sector total RM12.25 million. Addressing concerns about foreign competition, Liew stated that while Malaysia imposes no restrictions on furniture sector investments, MIDA will no longer actively encourage foreign participation, particularly in labour-intensive projects. Two businessmen remanded over RM800,000 bribery case in Kuching

KUCHING (Aug 5): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sarawak has remanded two business owners for allegedly soliciting and receiving more than RM800,000 in bribes to facilitate an application for a non-existent commercial land lot in Kuching. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan issued a six-day remand order until Aug 11 at the Kuching Magistrate's Court today, following an application by MACC. Sources said the two male suspects, both in their 50s, were arrested around 8pm yesterday when they turned up at the MACC Sarawak office to give their statements. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly conspired to solicit and receive bribes as an inducement to help process an application for a commercial development land lot in Kuching. However, such an application never existed,' the source said. It is believed the alleged offences took place between 2020 and 2021.
