Fresh blow for Bulldogs as winger needs surgery

Fresh blow for Bulldogs as winger needs surgery

The Advertiser08-07-2025
Marcelo Montoya will miss six weeks with a neck injury in a fresh blow to Canterbury's hopes of sealing a top-two finish on the NRL ladder.
Montoya has had a mortgage on one wing spot since returning from a stint at the Warriors this year, but will go in for clean-out surgery after battling through pain in recent weeks.
The third-placed Bulldogs are confident the Fijian-born 29-year-old will return in time for finals.
The news is the last thing the Bulldogs needed after dropping back-to-back games to resurgent Penrith and Brisbane ahead of this weekend's away trip to Townsville.
Montoya looks set to miss tough clashes against the Sydney Roosters and Warriors during his six-week lay-off as the Bulldogs fight for their first top-two finish since 2012.
Highly rated internally for his impressive pre-season, Enari Tuala is a chance to join the backline after making his club debut in the Broncos loss, with Blake Wilson another option.
Coach Cameron Ciraldo could choose to keep Matt Burton at centre and Lachie Galvin and Toby Sexton as his halves after making a controversial late switch for the Broncos game.
But that would likely require moving either Bronson Xerri or captain Stephen Crichton to the wing.

Payne Haas limps off as Broncos stun Eels in massive NRL boilover

Parramatta have put a spear in Brisbane's top-four hopes in a stunning 22-20 win inspired by skipper Mitchell Moses. To make matters worse for the Broncos their star prop Payne Haas was seen limping badly at the end of the match at Suncorp Stadium. Moses was on fire in his return from injury with winger Zac Lomax his powerhouse self with two cracking tries. The clash had a drama-charged finish when Brisbane fullback Reece Walsh was off-side when collecting a Gehamat Shibasaki grubber with 48 seconds left on the clock. Parramatta fullback Joash Papalii was a sensation at No.1 and was a relieved man when Walsh was denied after he knocked-on for his opposite number to swoop. The Broncos, at full strength and on the back of five wins in a row, were error-riddled in the second half with Walsh the worst offender in a rocks and diamonds display. The home side led 14-12 at halftime against an Eels side that were more than up for the fight. Both halfbacks, at the elite end of the spectrum most weeks, were highly influential. Moses, back from a calf injury sustained in NSW camp in the lead-up to game two of the State of Origin series, was superb with his long and short kicking game to set up two tries. Broncos counterpart Reynolds was also on song with a runaway intercept try and crafty inside pass for Kobe Hetherington to race away. Moses was at it again after the break with a lovely out ball to Will Penisini to send Lomax over for his second after a loose pass by Walsh gifted possession. Walsh took several poor options in attack before on the last tackle he put on a superb step on the 40m line and found bench specialist Billy Walters in support to give Brisbane a 20-18 lead. Addo-Carr would not be denied and streaked over for his 150th career try to grab the lead The hosts left Haas on the bench for 30 minutes in the middle of the match as he battled a lingering lower back complaint, but he came back on for the final stint before suffering another possible injury. The first half was full of quality and competitive footy. Brisbane forward Xavier Willison was put on report for a cannonball tackle on Eels prop Junior Paulo early and the visitors got into a grind with determination. Walsh made the cardinal error of letting a Moses mid-field bomb bounce. Parramatta centre Sean Russell gathered, chipped over Walsh's head and scored a cracker. Reynolds then swooped on a Dean Hawkins pass to race 75m to score. The captain orchestrated the next try for Hetherington but the visitors were plucky. The quality of the Eels attack has improved markedly over the season and Moses, with a set play, lobbed a perfect kick for aerial specialist Lomax to dive, catch and score.

Reece Walsh denied last-ditch match winner as Eels snatch epic boilover

The Eels have beaten the Broncos 22-20 on the back of a Mitchell Moses masterclass after Reece Walsh was denied a last-ditch match winner in a thriller at Suncorp Stadium. Moses was superb in his return from injury finishing with a linebreak assist and three try assists, while Origin winger Zac Lomax had a classy double and Josh Addo-Carr scored his 150th try and the match winner. Xavier Willison was penalised for being third man in and making dangerous contact below the knee as the Eels took the lead through Mitchell Moses' boot. Addo-Carr was penalised for an escort to give Adam Reynolds the chance to lock up the scores. Walsh let a Moses bomb bounce to allow Sean Russell to produce a freak chip and chase try to give the Eels the lead. Reynolds pounced on an intercept from Dean Hawkins' pass to run away and score a long-range try to square it up again. Reynolds turned provider to put Kobe Hetherington through a hole and he did the rest to charge 30 metres to score and give the Broncos the lead before the break. Moses put the ball on a dime for Lomax with a pinpoint try assist off the boot just before half-time. Moses and Will Penisini combined to put Lomax over for a double as the Eels took back the lead. Walsh produced a brilliant sidestep to slice through and set up Billy Walters for a try as the Broncos took back the lead. Addo-Carr dived over in the corner for his milestone 150th try as the Eels took the lead yet again. Walsh looked to have pounced on a Joash Papalii blunder to score a late match winner, but the try was ruled out due to the Broncos fullback being off-side. The Eels held on for a deserved win in a seesawing epic to all but end Brisbane's top four hopes. MOSES STARS IN 'BITTERSWEET' MOMENT FOR EELS FANS Mitchell Moses proved why he's considered a top three halfback in the competition, starring for the Eels in his first game since Origin II. Moses has endured a wretched run with injury over the past two seasons and in 2025, has only played in seven games. It's no coincidence that Moses' poor luck with injury has correlated with the club's ordinary form but with the star half back on deck, Parramatta handed in one of their best performances of the season. Moses was in everything good the Eels did and his elite kicking game was evident for all to see. 'It's probably bittersweet for Parra fans as it's an insight into what they've missed,' Dan Ginnane said on Fox League. WALSH'S ACHILLES HEEL REARS UGLY HEAD At his best Reece Walsh is the best attacking weapon in the game, but unless he cuts the errors out of his game he won't be the best. Walsh put in a rocks and diamonds display to nearly pull the Broncos out of the fire, but his penchant for errors came back to bite him and his team. Walsh had 147 run metres from 14 runs to go with three tackle busts, a linebreak and a try assist and nearly the match winning try. But the fact he was off-side blew his chance at scoring the game winner and he also had three errors, a missed tackle and gave away the crucial penalty. Walsh is an absolute freak of a player, but he needs to cut the errors out of his game if the Broncos want to go all the way to a drought-breaking premiership.
