China sack Ivankovic after World Cup failure, U-19 coach Djurdjevic named interim boss
BEIJING, June 28 — China's football association yesterday said it has sacked national coach Branko Ivankovic after the country failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
The decision followed a series of setbacks in qualifying for China, who have only ever played once in a World Cup.
China lost 1-0 to Indonesia in early June, a result that effectively dashed the national team's hopes of qualifying.
They ultimately finished second-to-last in their Asian group, with seven defeats in 10 matches.
'As the Chinese men's national team failed to qualify for the play-off stage, the contract of the coach and his staff has been automatically terminated, in accordance with the stipulated terms,' the Chinese Football Association said in a statement Friday.
'Branko Ivankovic will no longer lead the national team,' it said, thanking the Croatian, who has coached Dinamo Zagreb and Iran, for his 'hard work'.
The Serbian coach of the Chinese U-19 men's national team, Dejan Djurdjevic, has been appointed interim national coach, the CFA said.
The Chinese team are ranked 94th in the world by FIFA, continuing a downward slide that began several years ago.
The side have long been the target of ridicule by Chinese fans due to their poor results and the multiple corruption scandals plaguing the sport.
President Xi Jinping has said he wanted China to win the World Cup one day, but the latest flop means they have only ever played there once, in 2002, when they failed to get a point or score a goal. — AFP

Fernandez was signed from Benfica in February 2023 for a British transfer record fee at the time of £107 million (RM621.6 million). In 2025 he has scored and assisted a total of 14 goals. 'This season he struggled a bit at the beginning to understand the way we want to play but (since) then he is doing fantastic also in terms of numbers, goals and assists,' Maresca added. 'This is what I want from attacking players — I have said many times that I prefer to have attacking players with 10-12 goals each than just one striker with 40 goals. 'His contribution has been top and I am sure it will be even better next season.' Chelsea have won all three previous competitive meetings with Benfica, the last coming in the Europa League final in 2013. But Maresca is wary of the Portuguese side after they beat Bayern Munich to top their group at the competition. 'I think Benfica, not only in this competition, have always shown how big a club they are in Europe,' said the coach. 'In the last game they beat Bayern so they showed what they can do. Brentford names set-piece coach Andrews to replace Thomas Frank in surprise managerial gamble
LONDON June 28 — Brentford yesterday confirmed the appointment of former set-piece coach Keith Andrews as their new manager to replace Thomas Frank. Frank left the Bees to take charge of Tottenham earlier this month after guiding Brentford to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Andrews was the surprise choice to succeed Frank, with Brentford reportedly picking him ahead of Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna and former Ajax manager Francesco Farioli. Owner Matthew Benham's decision to hand Andrews his first managerial role is a significant gamble. Andrews, a former Irish international, joined Brentford's backroom staff in 2024 to work as their set-piece expert. The 44-year-old has previously held coaching roles with Sheffield United, MK Dons and Ireland.
