"Creating jobs destroys poverty", says World Bank President Ajay Banga, praising UP Govt's development efforts

India Gazette09-05-2025
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 9 (ANI): President of the World Bank Group Ajay Banga on Friday said that creating jobs destroys poverty and praised the development efforts of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government.
The World Bank Chief is on a day-long visit to Lucknow to attend a range of meetings and events.
Addressing a meeting in Lucknow, President of the World Bank Group, Ajay Banga, stated, 'The single most important thing that we can do together is to create jobs for people. A job is the best way to destroy the illness of poverty, poverty not only of the money you earn, but poverty of your mind. Poverty of your mind comes from not having hope, not having optimism, not having a future that you deserve, and what you are doing is destroying poverty by creating jobs. The best way to create jobs is to build the infrastructure: highways, railways, airports, logistics.'
Banga emphasised that a developed India cannot materialise without a developed Uttar Pradesh and commended Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for fulfilling the needs of the populace.
''Viksit Bharat' cannot happen without 'Viksit UP'... The Chief Minister's leadership has transformed the perception; as you said, it starts from the determination to create the right environment, law and order, safety, business regulations, and infrastructure. You have a leadership that is focused on delivering on all the things that people care about, and it requires determination,' Banga said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also attended the meeting. Speaking there, Chief Minister Adityanath mentioned that the state government is seeking support from the World Bank for the UP-AGREES program to enhance agricultural productivity in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
'On behalf of the people of Uttar Pradesh, I welcome Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, to Uttar Pradesh... The productivity of agriculture in the western part of Uttar Pradesh is much higher than in the eastern part. To increase productivity in eastern Uttar Pradesh as well, we have sought help from the World Bank in the UP-AGREES (Uttar Pradesh Agricultural Development and Rural Enterprise Ecosystem Strengthening) program,' CM Yogi stated.
CM Yogi added, 'Poshan Abhiyaan is an important mission being run by the World Bank, and under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, we have taken steps in this direction in Uttar Pradesh. Take-Home Ration (THR) is one of the steps in that direction. The World Bank team will also visit the Take-Home Ration (THR) plant in Lucknow.' (ANI)

The announcement came after bilateral talks between Prime Minister Modi and Ghanaian President John Mahama in Accra. The visit holds significance as it marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over three decades. Prime Minister Modi announced that both leaders had agreed to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors. 'The President and I have agreed to elevate our bilateral relationship to the level of a 'Comprehensive Partnership.' India is more than just a partner; it stands as a co-traveller in Ghana's journey toward nation-building,' he said. Emphasising defence and security as a key area of engagement, Prime Minister Modi said both nations would advance their collaboration guided by a shared vision. 'In the defence and security sector, we will progress with the guiding principle of 'Security through Solidarity.' CM Fadnavis Should Apologise: MVA After SIT Clears Aaditya Thackeray In Disha Salian Case

New Delhi: Leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Wednesday strongly criticised the ruling Mahayuti alliance and called for an apology from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis following a Special Investigation Team's (SIT) submission to the Bombay High Court stating there was no foul play in the death of Disha Salian, the former manager of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of maligning Aaditya Thackeray with baseless allegations linking him to Salian's death. Speaking to ANI, Raut said, 'Devendra Fadnavis must apologise. If the police have concluded it was a suicide, BJP leaders and even Eknath Shinde should apologise for defaming Aaditya Thackeray.' #WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra | On Mumbai Police SIT's report to Bombay High Court ruling out 'foul play' in Disha Salian death case, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut says, "Now, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis should apologise (to Aaditya Thackeray). Narayan Rane's son Nitish… — ANI (@ANI) July 3, 2025 Senior NCP leader Eknath Khadse echoed Raut's condemnation, accusing the BJP of exploiting the case for political gains. 'They levelled baseless allegations against Aaditya Thackeray and played dirty politics over the death of a woman,' Khadse told ANI. Earlier, Mumbai Police told ANI, "So far, the findings of the SIT pertaining to the circumstances that caused deceased Disha Salian's death are coherent with the findings of the earlier investigation officer of the said case. However, further investigation is still being carried out by the SIT." Disha Salian died on June 8, 2020, after falling from the 14th floor of a residential building in Mumbai's Malad area. Her death had sparked widespread conspiracy theories and political disputes within Maharashtra. Salian's father, Satish Salian, has repeatedly claimed that his daughter was gangraped and murdered. However, the Mumbai Police's affidavit submitted to the Bombay High Court rejected these claims, stating there was no evidence of sexual or physical assault. The police affidavit, filed by Senior Inspector Shailendra Nagarkar of Malvani Police Station, indicated that Salian died by suicide, jumping from her apartment window of her own volition. It cited that she was under 'tremendous mental stress' due to family disputes and failed business ventures, and was inebriated at the time of her death. Her fiancé, who was present on the night of the incident, also ruled out any foul play. In March, Satish Salian approached the Bombay High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and a First Information Report (FIR) against Aaditya Thackeray. Subsequently, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane demanded Thackeray's resignation and criminal action against him. Aaditya Thackeray has challenged the petition, terming it 'false, frivolous, and motivated' and has sought a hearing before any orders are passed. The Bombay High Court is yet to decide on Satish Salian's plea for a CBI investigation.

IFC Invests ₹460 crore in India's largest battery energy storage project in Gujarat

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, on Thursday committed Rs 460 crore to IndiGrid to build India's largest standalone battery energy storage system project in Gujarat. The project is designed to play a key role in supporting the state's clean energy goals by enhancing grid stability and ensuring reliable power is available during peak demand, a joint statement said. The long-term financing of USD 55 million (about Rs 460 crore) will be through a subscription to listed non-convertible debentures, with USD 38.5 million from IFC's own account and USD 16.5 million in concessional support from the Clean Technology Fund, one of the multi-donor trust funds under the World Bank-hosted Climate Investment Funds framework. IFC Regional Director for South Asia Imad N Fakhoury said, "Expanding access to reliable, affordable electricity is central to development and IFC's mission in emerging markets. Battery energy storage is critical for diversifying India's energy mix and ensuring clean power is available when demand is highest." IndiGrid has been a trusted partner to IFC in advancing sustainable and inclusive infrastructure in India, he said, adding, the latest investment supports Gujarat's goal of achieving 100 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 and sets a replicable model for other states. India's power sector is undergoing a structural shift as the country advances toward its target of 500 GW of clean energy capacity by 2030, it said. The increasing integration of solar and wind energy introduces new challenges for grid stability, peak load management, and dispatch reliability, it added. Utility-scale battery storage is emerging as a critical solution to address to grid stability challenges, including peak load management and dispatch reliability, while enabling greater integration of solar and wind energy. "With IFC's support, we are proud to lead the deployment of one of India's first and largest BESS assets in Gujarat. This project represents a strategic milestone in building next-generation infrastructure that is clean, resilient, and future-ready," IndiGrid Managing Director Harsh Shah said.>
