Rs 66,000 crore gone! LIC portfolio takes a hit in July as bluechip stocks crash

A brutal sell-off in some of India's most storied bluechip stocks ripped a staggering Rs 66,000 crore from the Life Insurance Corporation of India 's ( LIC ) vast equity portfolio in July. The market carnage, which saw titans like Reliance Industries (RIL), TCS, Axis Bank and HCL Technologies suffer up to double-digit declines, dealt a significant blow to the nation's largest institutional investor, underscoring the fierce headwinds that rattled markets last month. The value of LIC's mammoth portfolio, which stood at Rs 15.94 lakh crore at the end of June 2025, plummeted by 4.15% to Rs 15.28 lakh crore in July. This sharp erosion highlights the vulnerability of even the most seasoned investor to market volatility, as a sea of red ink washed over its holdings. The calculations are based on LIC's declared shareholding pattern for June, and the actual figures may have varied based on any trading activity by the insurer in July. The top ten losers alone accounted for more than Rs 38,000 crore in value erosion, revealing concentrated pain at the top. Reliance Industries, LIC's largest holding, was the biggest drag, wiping out a colossal Rs 10,146 crore from the portfolio as its share price fell 7.35% in the month, shows data collated from ACE Equity. Live Events The IT sector was a major source of pain. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) saw the value of LIC's stake shrink by Rs 7,457 crore following a 12.24% plunge in its stock. HCL Technologies and Infosys compounded the tech misery, losing Rs 3,751 crore and Rs 3,744 crore, respectively. Tech Mahindra also bled heavily, with its value dropping by Rs 2,253 crore. Also Read | LIC's Rs 15 lakh crore portfolio shakeup: Defence stocks in, retail darlings Suzlon, Vedanta out The banking and financial space was not spared. IDBI Bank, in which LIC holds a 49.24% stake, saw its value crumble by Rs 5,707 crore. Private sector lenders Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank also suffered significant losses of Rs 3,200 crore and Rs 2,531 crore, respectively. Beyond the headline names, the damage was widespread, with several companies witnessing precipitous falls in their stock prices, leading to substantial mark-to-market losses for LIC. The sharpest percentage declines were seen in smaller holdings, which nonetheless underscore the breadth of the market downturn. Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) was the worst performer, with the value of LIC's holding crashing by nearly 30%. Reliance Power saw a dramatic 24.72% fall in its share price. Other significant losers in percentage terms included Bharat Dynamics (-16.73%), SBI Cards (-15.01%), and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (-14.54%). These figures illustrate a challenging month where weakness was not confined to a single sector but was felt across technology, finance, energy, and industrial stocks. Silver linings in LIC portfolio Amid the widespread gloom, a handful of companies managed to buck the trend and deliver positive returns, though they were not enough to offset the broader losses. ICICI Bank was the standout gainer, adding Rs 1,324 crore to LIC's portfolio value. Patanjali Foods also provided a significant boost, with its value increasing by Rs 768 crore on the back of a 14% stock price surge. HDFC Bank contributed a gain of Rs 615 crore. Other notable gainers included JSW Steel (up Rs 422 crore), Maruti Suzuki (up Rs 365 crore), and Ambuja Cements (up Rs 250 crore). These bright spots, however, were few and far between in a month dominated by selling pressure. China's Largest Aircraft Carrier Hits The Sea; J-15T, J-35 Jets To Be Deployed – A Threat From Taiwan To The Indian Ocean?

Beijing: China has moved its most powerful aircraft carrier, the Fujian Type 003, into open waters. This step marks a milestone for China's naval development. The ship was built entirely by Chinese engineers. The launch system on the carrier uses electromagnetic catapults, similar to the technology used by the United States. Only two countries have this capability now: the United States and China. Beijing's state broadcaster, CCTV, released footage of the aircraft carrier at sea. The video showed flight tests involving the J-15T fighter jet. This aircraft is a newer version of the J-15, which itself is based on the Russian Su-33 design. The J-15T, along with other aircraft such as the stealth J-35, may soon be a regular feature on the carrier. The navy plans to test different types of aircraft onboard, including training planes and surveillance aircraft. China has two other carriers already: Liaoning and Shandong. With the Fujian, the total rises to three. Another carrier, the Type 004, is under construction. China wants to have at least six carriers in service by 2035. The Fujian, which displaces around 80,000 tons, is heavier than its predecessors but still lighter than the US Navy's largest carriers. The USS Gerald R. Ford, for instance, displaces over 100,000 tons. The Fujian's design has a few unique features. Its island structure is shaped to reduce radar detection. The deck supports advanced radar and electronic systems. China says the Fujian can carry 50 to 60 fighter jets. This could reduce the time it takes for China to respond in a crisis. India, in contrast, is moving more slowly. It operates two carriers: INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant. Plans for a third carrier remain uncertain. Some military leaders question the value of large ships in an age of long-range missiles. Former Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat supported more submarines instead. India is currently working on six submarines under Project 76. The IAC-3 or INS Vishal was once considered the next step for India. But the project faced delays. Costs are high. The technology is complex. India has not so far committed to building it. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh did say in 2024 that a new carrier would be built. But this may refer to replacing an older ship, not adding a third. The Chinese navy is moving in a different direction. Officials say the Fujian could enter full service by the end of 2025. Once that happens, China will usually have two active carriers at sea. The third can rotate for repairs. The Fujian's launch shows how China plans to expand its presence across oceans. The ship is not limited to nearby waters. It could operate across the Indo-Pacific. Future carriers, including the Type 004, may be nuclear-powered. China also plans to use drones, helicopters and early-warning aircraft alongside its fighters. The goal is China wants to build a navy that can operate anywhere in the world. The Fujian is a major step toward that future.

FPIs inject Rs 14,247 crore into Indian primary market in July amid IPO surge

ET Intelligence Group: Net inflow of foreign portfolio investors (FPI) in the Indian primary market hit a seven month high of $1.7 billion (₹14,247 crore) amid buoyancy in initial public offerings (IPO). The previous high was in December 2024 when FPIs had invested $2.1 billion (₹18,036 crore) through the primary route. Primary market includes IPOs and private placements. In July, the number of IPOs at 13 was the highest in any of the months of the current calendar year so far. These IPOs collectively raised ₹16,127 crore. In the previous month, while the number of IPOs at eight was less, the amount raised was higher at ₹17,690 crore, skewed by the IPO of HDB Financial Services , which scooped up ₹12,500 crore through a combination of fresh issue and offer for sale. This resulted in net outflow of $2.1 billion (₹17,740.6 crore) in July, primary and secondary market put together. The benchmark indices have shown signs of fatigue, losing over 3% last month. If the weakness persists, it may affect the flow of new IPOs in the coming weeks thereby impacting the FPI investments in the primary market.
