'Father Congress, mother Sanghi': Smriti Irani on family and why she joined BJP
Her mother, she said, was a supporter of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent body of the BJP.
'Father Congress, mother Sanghi!' she quipped.
She counted her RSS-supporting maternal grandfather as the major household influence on her political choices.
'I remember how my nana would walk daily for the RSS shakha in Sector 6, RK Puram,' she said in an interview with India Today TV in which she went to see her old home in Delhi.

'The environment at home was always that if you want to do social service, stay with the Sangh, 'what's the need to go into politics?'' she said, 'My view was that I wanted to be a part of policy-making, and that's why I joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).'
About how her father met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023, she said, 'My father was — still is — a Congress supporter… During Vajpayee-ji's time, when I was a BJP worker, he never sought to enter the PM residence; never wished to meet the PM. But this was the first time he showed such a desire; he wanted to meet PM Modi and thank him for giving his daughter an opportunity to serve the country.'
Irani, who lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amethi, is busy at present with her big TV acting comeback, with the series 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi'. It was this series at the turn of the millennium that made her a household name as 'Tulsi', easing her entry into politics.
In the interview, she denied that she was retiring from politics. She also spoke about why she has blunted her attacks on Rahul Gandhi, whom she had famously defeated in 2019: 'That's not my responsibility.'

Bhagwat also called for India to move beyond the symbolism of being the 'golden bird' and instead become a 'lion', asserting that the world recognises and respects power. 'The world understands power. Therefore, Bharat must become strong. It must also grow rich in economic terms,' Bhagwat said, stressing that strength and prosperity are essential for India to find its rightful place in the global order. Touching on the theme of national identity, Bhagwat made a strong case for preserving the name 'Bharat' without translation. 'Bharat is a proper noun. It should not be translated. 'India is Bharat' — that's true. But Bharat is Bharat. In every context — whether personal or public, while speaking or writing — we should say Bharat,' he emphasised. The RSS chief also spoke at length about the purpose and values of education, stating that true education empowers an individual to live independently while inculcating a spirit of sacrifice and selflessness. 'Education that teaches selfishness is not real education,' he declared. He further said that education is not confined to schools alone but extends to the home and society. 'The environment in which children grow up plays a crucial role. Society must reflect on what kind of atmosphere is needed to raise a confident and responsible generation,' Bhagwat said. The conference was attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, along with several senior academicians and vice-chancellors from across India. President of Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, Dr Pankaj Mittal, Secretary Dr Atul Kothari, Coordinator A Vinod, Chairman of Cochin Shipyard Madhu Nair were also present. The event focused on reshaping the country's educational framework in alignment with Indian cultural values and preparing the youth to face future challenges with clarity and confidence.

Opposition In Parliament Opposition parties have been demanding a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor and have sought the government's clarification over US President Donald Trump's repeated claims that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. The Opposition parties had been demanding PM Modi's presence during the debate. Since the Prime Minister travelled abroad on a two-nation visit this week, the discussion has been scheduled for next week. Apart from this, according to ANI, the floor leaders of the INDIA bloc parties will meet on Monday at 10 am to discuss the strategy for the second week of the monsoon session.
