AI reporter sends couple on imaginary adventure
Published on: Fri, Jul 04, 2025 Text Size: A still from the video, showing the 'reporter' covering the new cable car ride. - Social media KUALA LUMPUR: A hotel staff in Perak recently found herself in the awkward position of having to crush an elderly couple's cable car dreams – thanks to a suspiciously slick AI video. The couple had travelled all the way from Kuala Lumpur, bags packed and spirits high, to ride a cable car they believed soared from Kampung Kuak Hulu in Gerik, Perak, to Baling, Kedah.
Advertisement They casually asked the hotel staff if she had been on it herself and whether the queue was long, expecting local insider tips. Assuming they were joking, she laughed and told them the town was not exactly a cable car hotspot. The elderly woman, however, was having none of it and insisted they had seen the ride on Facebook, complete with a reporter and 'real' interviews. The staff then had to gently explain that the video was AI-generated, and the reporter the woman wanted to sue was, well…imaginary. Apparently, the video is still up on social media, and while seasoned scrollers might spot the fakes, it is easy to be fooled without a trained eye. Tell-tale signs include unnerving robotic stares, eerie smiles, and a reporter oddly dressed for a Swiss ski trip in tropical Malaysia. The imaginary museum with vintage cameras and panoramic views that defy actual geography did not help either. Online reactions ranged from 'we almost believed it too' to calls for tighter regulation on AI content before more grandparent dreams go up in digital smoke. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? The Great Inflatable Dome of China: 50m-high bubble blocks dust and noise from construction site
A giant inflatable dome has been erected over a worksite in Jinan in eastern China. - Photo: Mao Ning Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson/Facebook BEIJING: Who says construction can't be clean or stylish? A giant inflatable dome has been erected over a construction site in eastern China, in what may be the country's puffiest solution yet to keeping dust and noise pollution down. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, shared in a Facebook post on July 2 that Jinan in eastern China has introduced a 50m-high inflatable dome covering 20,000 sq m, which is reportedly the largest of its kind worldwide. An accompanying video on the post shows the large balloon-like structure enclosing the construction site. Mao said the dome aims to reduce noise and pollution, helping to protect nearby communities and the environment. According to Times Now News – an English-language news outlet based in India – which reported on the project on July 3, the dome is the first of its kind in China and uses negative pressure and air filtration systems to prevent dust from escaping into nearby areas. The Bridge Chronicle, a digital news platform, also reported on July 3 that the dome features advanced ventilation systems to ensure good air quality inside it, while transparent panels let in natural sunlight, cutting down on the need for artificial lighting during the day. The platform added that the dome's design allows for quick assembly and dismantling, making it a flexible solution for various construction projects. A viral TikTok video posted by British broadcaster ITV News on July 4 shows the dome being inflated, gradually taking on its tent-like shape as the sun rises and sets in the background. The video shows the dome nestled among several buildings, suggesting the site is in a developed urban zone. The time-lapse clip has since attracted more than 2.6 million views. Viewers of the TikTok video left some colourful and curious reactions. Karmic Kayda joked: 'This is really dangerous because if it gets too big it becomes really soft and a giant might see it and come to take a nap.' TikTok user Amely praised the innovation as 'such a clever way to protect both the environment and the people living nearby'. Meanwhile, a user by the name of ThingsRickAstlyWontDo was curious about the scale of the project, asking: 'How does one even manufacture a single sheet that large?' - The Straits Times/ANN

Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne bids farewell with Black Sabbath reunion
Published on: Sunday, July 06, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 06, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Osbourne performing at Back to the Beginning in Villa Park. Pic by Black Sabbath | Ross Halfin LONDON: Rock superstar Ozzy Osbourne bid farewell to fans with a Black Sabbath reunion in his final ever live performance, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. The legendary rocker told thousands of heavy metal enthusiasts at Villa Park, Birmingham – a stone's throw from where Black Sabbath was formed in 1968 – that it was "so good to be on this stage" as he performed his last set from a large black throne. Advertisement Osbourne and his fellow original Black Sabbath members – Tony Iommi, Terence "Geezer" Butler and Bill Ward – were the last to appear on stage as part of a star-studded line-up for the Back to the Beginning concert. Among the bands performing were Anthrax, Metallica and Guns N' Roses, and there were messages of thanks from other celebrities, including Jack Black, Ricky Gervais and Dolly Parton. Osbourne – who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019 – plans to continue to record music, but said that the concert marked the end for him performing live. The 76-year-old, nicknamed the Prince of Darkness, entered the stage for the final time by rising on his throne through a trap door. He started the performance by saying: "Let me hear you. Are you ready? Let the madness begin!" And later, in an emotional moment, Ozzy said: "I don't know what to say, man, I've been laid up for like six years. You have no idea how I feel - thank you from the bottom of my heart.' The rocker – who wore his signature black attire and thick eye makeup – sang five songs in his own set, with fans waving torches from their phones during "Mama, I'm Coming Home." He finished his performance with "Crazy Train," before confetti rained over a packed Villa Park. After a short break, he re-entered the stage to join the rest of Black Sabbath – for the first time in 20 years – in a special reunion. The band performed some of their greatest hits to the adoration of the crowd, ending with a rendition of "Paranoid" for the ultimate send-off. Fans chanted "Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy" as the rock legend thanked and blew kisses to those in attendance, before departing in an emotional ending to cap off an illustrious career on stage. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
