Madhya Pradesh CM directs action on affordable housing
: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Thursday held a review meeting of the Urban Development and Housing Department at Samatva Bhavan, CM House in Bhopal, and issued key directives to officials.
During the meeting, CM Yadav instructed that an action plan be prepared to develop affordable and convenient housing in urban areas, taking into account the socio-economic conditions of the people, to control the expansion of slums in cities.
He also emphasised environmental improvement in urban regions and said that parks must be developed, and tree plantations should be promoted in all housing projects, including those undertaken by development authorities and the Housing Board.
Additionally, the Chief Minister instructed that a comprehensive survey be conducted of illegal constructions around Bhopal's Upper Lake, and a campaign be launched for action against them.
The Chief Minister stated that reputed national-level builders and colonisers should be involved in urban colony development, and also stressed the immediate modernisation of fire services to manage emergencies in both urban and industrial areas.
The CM further stated that a proposal should be prepared to introduce the "Namo Train" service, aiming to expand intra-city rail connectivity in the state. He added that he would soon hold discussions with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to seek support in this regard.
He also instructed that priority be given to providing housing facilities to Ladli Behnas under government schemes. Directions were issued to urban bodies to take prompt action in organising meat and fish vendors and allotting suitable spaces for their operations.
The Chief Minister emphasised expanding the Deendayal Rasoi Yojana in religious areas with support not only from the government but also from voluntary organisations and private donors. He also proposed forming self-help groups in urban areas to establish modern laundry services, for which financial support and suitable space would be arranged.
He directed that houses constructed under the
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
(Urban) and other schemes should be allotted as soon as the ownership formalities are completed. Highlighting the importance of a clean urban environment, he said reserved land in cities should be identified and developed into city forests (Nagar Vans), with proper maintenance responsibilities clearly defined.
Along with this, state Urban Development & Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said that an integrated development plan is being prepared for religious and tourist towns. A development plan worth Rs 2,800 crore has been prepared for Chitrakoot town, including an Rs 800 crore Detailed Project Report by the Urban Development Department.
He added that the Housing Board has been instructed to explore redevelopment (re-densification) projects in the state.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal Saturday lashed out at Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, accusing him and the Congress of belittling India's scientific community and pharmaceutical sector. Goyal's rebuttal came in response to Siddaramaiah's recent remarks suggesting a possible link between Covid-19 vaccines and the rising incidence of heart attacks in Hassan district. Defending India's vaccination drive, Goyal, speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, said, 'India, with its vast population, successfully provided 250 crore vaccine doses free of cost because of our companies' ability to manufacture vaccines for less than Rs 100 per dose. But here we have a chief minister who seems to be insulting and undermining them. When they demean our scientists and the pharmaceutical industry, it raises questions about their motives. Are they acting at the behest of foreign powers? Are these powers uncomfortable with India's progress and trying to harm our pharmaceutical sector?' Goyal alleged that Siddaramaiah's remarks appeared to serve the interests of those opposed to India's economic growth. 'The Congress party, along with their chief minister, must clarify whether they are weakening India to serve external interests. They must apologise to our scientists and the pharmaceutical industry,' he said. The row erupted after Siddaramaiah, in a post on X on July 1, linked the recent spike in heart attack deaths in Hassan district to Covid-19 vaccines. Citing reports of over 20 heart attack-related deaths in the district in a month, Siddaramaiah wrote, 'It cannot be denied that the hasty approval and distribution of the Covid vaccine to the public could also be a reason for these deaths, as several studies worldwide have recently indicated that COVID vaccines could be a cause for the increasing number of heart attacks.' The chief minister announced the formation of an expert committee led by Dr K S Ravindranath, senior cardiologist and former director of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, to investigate the deaths. However, the committee in its study found no direct causal association between Covid-19 vaccination or prior Covid-19 infection and premature cardiovascular disease. In fact, most global studies reviewed in the report confirmed that vaccination is protective against long-term cardiac risks. The report attributes the rise in sudden cardiac events to a combination of factors including lifestyle changes during the pandemic (poor diet, reduced physical activity, stress, etc); higher prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors (diabetes, hypertension, obesity); genetic predisposition, recreational drug use, and binge drinking and vigorous physical activity shortly before death in some cases. The report emphasises that 'long Covid' is unlikely to be the driver behind the current rise in sudden cardiac deaths. It points instead to common, modifiable risk factors as the dominant contributors. Siddaramaiah's comments had triggered widespread criticism from health experts, industry leaders like Biocon's Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, and the Union Health Ministry, which warned against spreading vaccine hesitancy. Amid the backlash, Siddaramaiah clarified his stand on July 3, reiterating that his statement stemmed from empathy towards grieving families and not from anti-vaccine sentiments. He said, 'When parents lose young children or families lose breadwinners suddenly, demanding answers is not misinformation – it is governance rooted in empathy.' He also acknowledged the crucial role played by Covid-19 vaccines in saving lives but cited global studies and even admissions by some vaccine makers, including AstraZeneca, regarding rare side effects like myocarditis. He further explained that his reference to 'hasty' approvals was about the emergency nature of vaccine rollouts worldwide, which were taken with limited long-term data – a 'calculated risk' acknowledged by the World Health Organization itself. 'Scientific caution is not anti-science,' he said, emphasising that transparency in governance also includes acknowledging rare risks. Meanwhile, Goyal also took a swipe at the Congress-led UPA government's record on trade agreements. He asserted that India now negotiates from a position of strength, with national interest as its top priority. 'Since the Modi government took charge, India has signed free trade agreements with Mauritius, the UAE, Australia, the EFTA group (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), and the UK,' Goyal said. He noted that negotiations are underway with the EU, the US, Oman, Peru, and Chile. 'This is not the weak India of the Congress-UPA era, which signed deals compromising our national interests. Today, India negotiates confidently and competes globally,' he remarked.

Minister Clears Latur Farmer's Loan After Video Showed Him Pulling Plough
Latur: Moved by the video of a debt-hit farmer pulling a plough all by himself to till his field in Maharashtra's Latur district, state minister Babasaheb Patil on Saturday cleared his outstanding loan of Rs 42,500, an official release said. The video had evoked tremendous empathy from netizens for the plight of 75-year-old Ambadas Pawar, a resident of Hadolti village in Ahmedpur tehsil. After coming across the widely shared visual, Patil, who heads the cooperation ministry, had reached out to Pawar and promised to repay his pending crop loan, the release said. Ambadas Pawar had an outstanding loan of Rs 42,500 from the Hadolti Multi-purpose Cooperative Society. Patil visited the village on Saturday to hand over the amount to the society's office-bearers and instructed them to issue a clearance certificate to Pawar. The minister said the government is determined to address farmers' problems and is implementing various welfare schemes to improve their conditions. Pawar's viral video showed him dragging a plough on a dry patch of land with his wife by his side. With no means to hire oxen or tractors that cost nearly Rs 2,500 per day, Pawar had said that he and his wife had turned into human ploughs. On Friday, the Latur district unit of Krantikari Shetkari Sanghatana presented Pawar, who owns 2.5 acres of land, with a pair of bullocks. The bovine animals were brought to his house in Hadolti here in a procession amid music and dance. A charitable trust from Telangana also visited Pawar and handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh as direct financial aid.

MP govt to introduce new Bill on OBC reservation, says CM Mohan Yadav
Bhopal: Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Saturday said that his government will soon introduce a new Bill on OBC reservation in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. The Chief Minister reiterated that his government is committed to providing 27 per cent reservation to the OBC candidates in government services, and he has directed officials to prepare a Bill, which will be brought to the House for discussion. Responding to the Congress' claim of delay in the implementation of 27 per cent reservation to the OBC community, the Chief Minister said that Congress had approved the Bill without any proper "survey" and "preparation". "Congress misled the people on the OBC reservation issue. The Bill approved by the then Congress government was lacking proper preparation and a survey. The BJP government is committed to providing 27 per cent reservation to OBC people," CM Yadav said during a press conference. Earlier in the day, state Congress chief Jitu Patwari, along with the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state Assembly, Umang Singhar, blamed the BJP government for delaying the implementation of 27 per cent reservation to OBC. The Chief Minister's statement came a day after the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Madhya Pradesh government over the continued delay in appointments to 13 per cent of government posts kept on hold under the 27 per cent OBC reservation policy. The court has sought an explanation from the state for not filling these posts despite there being no legal stay on the enhanced OBC quota. The Chief Secretary has been directed to submit an affidavit in the matter. The notice was issued during a hearing on a petition filed by candidates affected by the hold on appointments. The petitioners, under the banner of OBC Mahasabha, demanded that the government fill 13 per cent of posts, which have remained vacant for several years despite the policy for 27 per cent OBC reservation being introduced in 2019 by the then Baghel government. The petitioners stated that although there is no stay from the Supreme Court on the implementation of 27 per cent reservation for OBCs, the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) has kept 13 per cent of posts on hold in various recruitment drives held in recent years.
