Why so many young men dey struggle wit mental health, and no dey ask for help?

For recent years, di world don wake up to a growing youth mental health problem, and one group dey particularly vulnerable: boys and young men.

Informal approach
Recent research don identify several oda themes beside di social norms and di stigma of showing weakness wey dey shape how boys view mental health support.
Many boys no recognise dia symptoms or sabi how to seek help, and dem often no feel comfortable for formal clinical settings.
Boys and young men dey often prefer informal help, like conversations wit friends, or anonymous, online support, and male-friendly messaging wey aligns help-seeking wit strength, responsibility and action get more impact.
Dis don lead to some youth services ditching traditional clinical models. For Australia, for instance, di youth mental health organisation Orygen co-designed spaces wit young pipo wey dey offer "soft entry" – informal settings wia conversations fit happun.
"Young men fit no dey as amenable to sitting in a consulting room for dia first contact. Dem fit no wan sit down for interview," Orygen executive director Patrick McGorry tok.
"Maybe dem go rada get a more laid-back conversation, while dem dey do sometingelse - like going for a walk or maybe playing a game of pool or table tennis."
Social media: na friend or enemy?
Social media na double-edged sword: e fit connect isolated teens and provide valuable information, but also expose dem to harmful content and toxic ideals of masculinity.
"Di majority of young men now dey connect wit men and masculinity influencer content," according to Dr Simon Rice, clinical psychologist and global director of di Movember Institute of Men Health.
Movember research find say many young men wey dey engage wit "manosphere" content report worse mental health dan dia peers.
But Rice stress say no be all content dey negative, and social media fit also be a useful tool to improve mental health.
"We wan make sure say we fit harness di positive aspects of social media to bring communities togeda, to provide good health and mental health information, while minimising di possibilities for harm."
Howeva, e say dat di working of social media algorithms dey present a serious challenge as dem dey designed to distribute content wey dey more likely to be viral for nature, and e dey hard for positive, health-oriented content to "win di algorithm".
Professor Mina Fazel, Chair of Adolescent Psychiatry for Oxford University, agree say e dey crucial to teach teenagers and parents how social media algorithms work, pointing to soon-to-be-published research wey find say a third of young pipo don see content wey dey related to self-harm on social media for di past month.
But Professor Fazel add say social media alone no dey to blame and broader changes for society fit dey considered as well.
"Family and community structures dey change dramatically, and social media potentially fit play a supportive role for a lot of young pipo," she say.
Loneliness factor
One of di most serious challenges wey dem dey sometimes overlooked na loneliness.
According to a Gallup survey wey dem publish for May, 25% of US men age 15 to 34 say dem don feel lonely for a significant potion of di previous day, higher dan di national average of 18% and di total for young women, also 18%.
Dr Ogrodniczuk say dat di data for HeadsUpGuys show say loneliness and a lack of purpose na two of di most common stressors among young men.
Sabi pipo underline di need to provide safe spaces wia boys fit build friendships and tok openly – no be just for designated therapy sessions, but for everyday interactions.
Dat fit mean mentorship programmes, peer support groups or simply to retink how we tok about mental health for classrooms.
Role of schools
"E get quite a positive trend say wen young boys do seek help, dem dey usually find am helpful," Professor Mina Fazel tok. "E fit no actually matter wia dat help dey deliva: it fit be for school, e fit be for social services, e fit be for di community."
E also get a growing evidence say school culture play a role for boys wellbeing. Academic pressure, particularly in contexts wia boys dey fall behind girls, fit fuel anxiety, frustration and disengagement.
Professor Fazel believe schools need to dey redesigned to work better for boys.
"Di majority of di world children get access to schools," she say, "so maybe dis na di place wia we really need to tink about not only di academic education of children, but a broader offer of wetin e mean to develop as adolescents - especially for boys."

A survey of 2,000 workers by Alcohol Change UK found 64 per cent of UK workers reported drinking alcohol for work-related reasons - with job stress, pressure and anxiety behind increased consumption in the past 12 months. Four in 10 said they drank more alcohol due to work-related anxiety, while 38 per cent said they drank more to cope with work stress. Over a third drank more alcohol because of pressure or deadlines at work and 29 per cent reported increased alcohol consumption due to job insecurity Jane Gardiner, head of consultancy and training at research group Alcohol Change UK, said: 'Although the work we do is hugely varied, this research suggests that in the last year many of us have been drinking more alcohol in an attempt to manage work-related stress, anxiety, pressure and job insecurity. 'Yet, from poor sleep and hangovers to high blood pressure, depression and other health conditions, alcohol can take a big toll on our health and wellbeing. 'While it may offer short-term relief for some, over time it's more likely to worsen feelings of stress, anxiety and pressure and lead to a cycle of self-medicating that can be hard to break free from, even if we want to.' The research has been released to mark the start of Alcohol Awareness Week, and found demand from employees for preventative action and education around alcohol at work. This year's theme 'Alcohol and work' focuses on how work environments and pressures can influence the way we drink, and how we can build healthier, more inclusive workplace cultures. More than 8 in 10 of the workers surveyed believed employers have some responsibility to address alcohol in the workplace - but over a third said they feel more comfortable talking about mental health in the workplace than alcohol. Ms Gardiner added: 'Mirroring the progress seen in mental health in the workplace in recent years to drive conversations, boost compassion and support and reduce stigma, it's so encouraging to see such strong appetite for alcohol awareness and education from workers. 'What's hugely positive is that employees appear to recognise that preventative, proactive action is where alcohol factors in – above reactive action when an issue presents itself. 'It's this kind of support that will start to make alcohol less of a taboo subject, raise awareness of the impact of our drinking habits on our overall health and wellbeing and prevent avoidable alcohol harm before it happens.'

A powerlifting coach who took steroids for almost a decade has warned the drugs take a toll on users' bodies and mental health - but their use will never be stopped. Anabolic steroids, a type of performance-enhancing drug (PEDs) related to testosterone, have long been controversial in the fitness world. Even the mention of PEDs can be divisive, with figures like Aussie swimmer James Magnussen criticised for participating in the 'Enhanced Games', where the use of drugs was encouraged. Anabolic steroids are illegal without a medical prescription in Australia, but that hasn't stopped people increasingly using them for means other than better health. Gus Cooke, 36, trained using anabolic steroids for bodybuilding and powerlifting competitions over 10 years while living in Brisbane - but gave them up in 2023. 'When I initially started taking them, I didn't really want to, but it was a bit of peer pressure,' he told Daily Mail Australia. 'The sport kind of created this need to keep up and do what everyone else is doing, and so you are led down a dark path. 'Rather than sending you backwards, like a party drug, it's making you perform better. 'It's an addictive feeling. Winning is addictive - but then you start to realise the health concerns.' After his last competition two years ago, Mr Cooke decided it was time for a change and came off steroids before moving to Phuket, Thailand, with his wife. But that is when the difficulties really began. 'If you've been on them for a long time, you're going to have neurochemistry changes. (It) starts to impact your mental health,' he said. 'Then, it starts to get paired with muscle loss quite quickly. 'After long-term use, you've got quite a bit of suppression, meaning that your natural production (of testosterone) has slowed down.' Mr Cooke is now taking TRT, Testosterone Replacement Therapy, which is a legal, medically prescribed drug. 'My maturity and sensibility is stronger than the desire to want to go back on (them) but it doesn't mean you don't miss it,' he said. 'I do miss taking it (but) I never will again. I don't see any need.' As a coach, he now focuses on mitigating the risks of his clients who do take steroids. 'I know so much about training and more effective ways of managing performance enhancement to the degree that you can perform better if managed at much lower dosages. 'You can't stop the use. You never will stop the use. There was no point criminalising it because all you do is create an underground subculture of steroid use. 'If I demonise it, (my athletes) will go do it behind doors and, because there is little support, I need to be that support for them.' While the use of anabolic agents in Australia is illegal without a prescription, there is a trend of increasing non-medical use. The Australian National Drug Strategy Household Survey recorded that non-medical anabolic steroid use almost tripled in the 18 years between 2001 and 2019. Experts have also raised concerns about the link between social media images and the use of steroids. Research published in the American Psychological Association in 2024 highlighted the link between social media-influenced body image concerns and behaviors such as anabolic-androgenic steroid use among men. While the findings were mixed, there were some damning conclusions made. 'It was clear that appearance-related social media use is related to a more negative body image and greater odds of anabolic-androgenic steroid use in men,' it said. Mr Cooke said steroid use by social media influencers led to two issues - some people promote it as a 'magic pill', while others do not disclose that their gains are influenced by drugs, leading to followers becoming disappointed. 'With the people who are more public about it, you've got this high performer who's also, at the same time, using it to make it look "cool",' he said. 'And people see it as that magic pill.' Meanwhile, Mr Cooke warned that the second group are seeing an idolised image that is 'unrealistic'. 'You've got people who've been doing this for a really long time showing their results, and people get disheartened because they're not given the context. 'The reality is that anything worth getting in terms of a really chiselled physique isn't attainable without anabolic steroids. 'It can be done naturally, but doesn't look the same.' What is the answer? For Mr Cooke, if steroid-use is inevitable in the industry, it needs to be managed rather than banned. 'There needs to be both infrastructure to keep the market accountable and infrastructure for athletes to feel safe, to get help,' he said. 'There only needs to be basic knowledge out there to reduce so much harm. 'It's so underground no one knows what to do, and people need access to medical facilities to test if there's contaminants, to test what they're taking and then how to safely use it.' The proof of the point seems to have been made in Australian world-first research, with Griffith University running a steroid testing trial which was paired with education. Anonymous users submitted steroids for a composition analysis, including for purity. According to the results published in May this year, almost a quarter of the substances tested contained unexpected steroids. Over half were incorrectly dosed. The trial also revealed more than 80 per cent of participants would change or reduce their use of steroids after being shown the results of the research. 'Criminalisation and stigmatisation have led to these individuals turning to peers, social networks, online forums and drug coaches,' lead researcher Dr Tim Piatkowski said at the time. 'These strategies are a form of folk pharmacology or 'bro science' and can sometimes lack appropriate oversight from medical professionals.

Ministers are poised to scrap the system which ensures pupils with special needs such as autism and ADHD get personalised support at school. The Government is considering ditching bespoke-education plans for children with special educational needs and disabilities (Send) under a wholesale review of the current model. On Sunday, Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, repeatedly refused to rule out scrapping education, health and care plans (EHCPs) – legally binding documents that spell out Send children's individual teaching requirements. She said the Government would 'make sure that every child gets the support maintained that they need' but three times declined to say whether she would axe the EHCPs when asked by the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg. Ministers are concerned the state-funded support packages are hoovering up much of the £11 billion annual special-needs budget without delivering better outcomes for vulnerable children. Councils are legally bound to pay for additional help stated on the tailored care plans, which sometimes demand pupils are sent to private Send schools with fees of up to £100,000. However, autism and ADHD charities voiced concerns they could be prioritised for cuts to extra support after figures showed ballooning EHCPs for children with those conditions. A record 639,000 children in England currently hold an EHCP following an 11 per cent rise in the year to January, with the figure almost doubling over the past six years. There are fears that the figure could be pushed even higher by private school families priced out by Labour's 20 per cent VAT on fees, which came into force in January. Around one in five private school pupils – or 100,000 – have some form of Send, with private school parents claiming they have flocked to the sector after giving up in the battle for an EHCP. The recent increase in ECHPs has largely been driven by three types of need: autistic spectrum disorder; speech, language and communication needs; and social, emotional and mental health needs, which include ADHD. That trio now accounts for almost three-quarters of all EHCPs, while severe learning difficulties and physical disabilities make up just four per cent respectively. But Tom Nicholls, assistant policy director at the National Autistic Society, warned that scrapping the plans would rip up the main legal mechanism for those children to obtain extra support. 'EHCPs have those two crucial aspects – they're the only place that brings together planning across education, health and care, and also provide that legal accountability to give children the assurance that they are going to get what they have a right to,' he told The Telegraph. 'That needs to be enshrined. Everyone's really concerned that they might disappear, either from them or from the system.' 'No doubt EHCP system could be better' Others said they feared scrapping EHCPs could prove a backdoor for the Government to slash support, after Sir Keir Starmer last week was forced to reverse cuts to benefits and personal independence payment (Pip). Henry Shelford, chief executive of Autism UK, said: 'There's no doubt that the EHCP system could be better. 'But I think following what's happened with Pip and seeing what's happened with ADHD and the NHS, it's very hard to trust that the Government is going to actually put something in that's better, and not use any change as an excuse to withdraw support so that it can cut costs.' A government source said the Send review would aim to slash the costly bureaucracy of drawing up EHCPs and plug the savings into extra support in mainstream schools. Ms Phillipson has described the current system as 'broken', with a White Paper outlining the reforms expected to be published this autumn. It means Labour is expected to face a fresh battle with Left-wing MPs and special-needs charities over potential cuts after the summer recess. Ms Phillipson told the BBC: 'What I can say very clearly is that we will strengthen and put in place better support for children but I do just need to put this in the wider context of where we are at the moment.' 'Government is working with parents and experts' A government source said: 'There will always be a legal right to the additional support that children with Send need and we will protect it. 'This Government is prepared to grasp the nettle and reform a broken system set up by the Conservatives that they themselves described as 'lose, lose, lose'. 'We will ensure that every child in this country gets the opportunity to achieve and thrive at school, and get on in life. A Department for Education spokesperson said: 'The evidence is clear that this Government inherited a Send system left on its knees – which is why we are looking at changes to improve support for children and stop parents having to fight for help. 'We have been clear that there are no plans to abolish Send tribunals, or to remove funding or support from children, families and schools. 'This Government is actively working with parents and experts on the solutions, including more early intervention to prevent needs from escalating and £740 million to encourage councils to create more specialist places in mainstream schools. 'As part of our Plan for Change, we will restore the confidence of families up and down the country and deliver the improvement they are crying out for so every child can achieve and thrive.'
