Karnataka sees 22% rainfall deficit in July so far, Bengaluru anticipates increased rainfall mid-August

The southern state of Karnataka experienced a notably dry July this year, with rainfall levels falling 22 per cent short of the seasonal average. Despite this significant shortage, meteorologists anticipated a surge in downpours across the state in August that could make up for the current deficit. IMD forecasted a wet spell for Bengaluru mid-August, with cooler temperatures and brisk winds anticipated.(Satish Bate/ Hindustan Times) ALSO READ | Bengaluru's long-delayed civic body polls likely to happen after November: DCM DK Shivakumar A regional review from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said four districts, namely — Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Gadag and Koppala — benefited from above average rainfall between July 1 and July 29, while seven other districts endured notably low precipitation. These drier regions included Bidar, Dharwad, Haveri, Chikkaballapura, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar and Mysuru. The rest of the districts experienced rainfall that was more or less in line with typical expectations for the month. Russia Earthquake: Where Is Kamchatka And Why Does The Earth Keep Cracking There?

Last Updated: Russia Earthquake Tsunami Warning: Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, known for volcanoes, quakes, and tsunami threats Russia Earthquake Tsunami Warning: Signs of devastation have emerged in Russia's far east following one of the world's strongest earthquakes in recent history. The 8.8-magnitude quake, which struck the Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday morning, caused widespread panic and triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific, including in Japan, Canada, the United States, and as far south as New Zealand. According to a PTI report, the earthquake struck near Avacha Bay, around 125 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a major city with a population of nearly 180,000. It occurred at a depth of around 20 km, and its power was strong enough to generate waves several metres high that inundated coastal areas and disrupted infrastructure. Russia, Japan, the US, and Canada began immediate evacuation efforts, especially in vulnerable coastal towns. In Hawaii, tsunami alerts coincided with the afternoon rush hour, causing major traffic congestion as sirens sounded and people rushed to higher ground. Schools in the region cancelled all after-school activities, and local authorities warned of dangerous waves. In northern Japan, a tsunami wave of 50 cm was recorded at the port of Ishinomaki, with several areas observing sea-level surges. Although no major injuries have been reported so far, precautionary evacuations were carried out across the region. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for Hawaii, stating that the waves had the potential to damage coastlines across the islands. Authorities in Oregon and British Columbia also issued advisories, warning residents to stay away from beaches, marinas, and ports. The Philippines and New Zealand also urged residents to avoid coastlines, citing the risk of unpredictable surges and strong undercurrents, even where large waves were not expected. Impact On Kamchatka In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, buildings shook violently, cars swayed, and several structures collapsed. Power outages and mobile network disruptions were reported. Emergency services confirmed that while several individuals required medical assistance, no serious injuries had been recorded. The Kuril Islands, particularly Severo-Kurilsk, also experienced tsunami activity, prompting residents to evacuate to higher ground. This was the strongest earthquake recorded in the Kamchatka region since 1952, when a 9.0-magnitude quake devastated the area and generated 9-metre-high waves that reached Hawaii. Why Kamchatka Is Prone To Earthquakes The Kamchatka Peninsula lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for its intense seismic and volcanic activity. The Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Okhotsk Microplate here at a rate of around 86 mm per year, making the region highly susceptible to megathrust earthquakes. The quake on July 30 occurred along this subduction zone, and its relatively shallow depth helped trigger the tsunami. Aftershocks as powerful as 6.9 magnitude have since been recorded, and geologists warn that tremors could continue for weeks. Region Of Natural Beauty And Geological Significance Kamchatka is home to more than 160 volcanoes, 29 of which remain active. Its dramatic landscapes and biodiversity attract scientists and adventure tourists from around the world. The region is also a crucial site for seismic research, helping scientists better understand the Earth's tectonic behaviour. Though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, the event underscores the persistent danger faced by communities along the Pacific Rim and highlights the urgent need for coordinated disaster preparedness across borders. Streets Flooded As Tsunami Waves Hit Russia's Severo-Kurilsk After 8.8 Magnitude Quake

Last Updated: The video showed tsunami waves crashing into the shore of Severo-Kurilsk in Russia, inundating streets and damaging coastal infrastructure, after the magnitude 8.8 earthquake. Tsunami waves hit the coastal area of Severo-Kurilsk, the main settlement on Russia's Kuril Islands in the Pacific, after a massive, magnitude 8.8 earthquake hit the country's Far East on Wednesday. According to the local Governor, Valery Limarenko, residents were safe and staying on high ground until the threat of a repeat wave was gone. The quake caused damage to buildings, and cars swayed in the streets in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which also had power outages and mobile phone service failures. Russian news agencies quoted the regional Health Ministry as saying that several people sought medical help in Kamchatka after the earthquake, but no serious injuries were reported. A video, shared by the Russian Television, showed tsunami waves hitting the shore in Russia's Severo-Kurilsk. The description also mentioned that the tsunami caused massive flooding and damage there. Among the world's strongest recorded quakes, today's earthquake in Russia appeared to be the strongest anywhere in the world since the March 2011 earthquake off northeast Japan that was 9.0 magnitude and caused a massive tsunami that set off meltdowns at a nuclear power plant. Only a few stronger earthquakes have ever been measured around the world. The tsunami alert disrupted transportation even in Japan. Ferries connecting Hokkaido and Aomori on the northern tip of Japan's Honshu island were suspended, as well as those connecting Tokyo and nearby islands, and some local train operations were suspended or delayed, according to operators. Sendai Airport temporarily closed its runway. A tsunami of 50 centimetres (1.6 feet) was detected at the Ishinomaki port in northern Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. This was the highest measurement so far among several locations around northern Japan.
