Delhi surpasses July average for rain

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Delhi's monthly rainfall for July has surpassed the average for the month, data showed.
So far this month, the city has recorded 220.2 mm of rainfall, exceeding the normal mark of 209.7 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
From June 1 till now, Delhi has received 322.2 mm of rainfall, higher than the average seasonal figure of 270.1 mm. Monsoon hit the city late June.
Between 8.30 am and 2.30 pm on Tuesday, the city recorded 68.1 mm of rainfall at its primary weather station in Safdarjung. Other stations reported varying amounts — the Ridge recorded 129.5 mm, Lodhi Road 71.8 mm, Pragati Maidan 45.5 mm, and Pusa 37.5 mm — as per data from the Regional Meteorological Centre.
The weather department has forecast that the rain spell is likely to continue over the next seven days, or until at least August 3.
With a cloudy sky covering the city, the day saw intermittent rainfall.
The maximum temperature in Delhi dropped to 29.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday 5.8 notches below the season's average, while the minimum temperature settled at 26.8 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD.
The air quality was in the 'satisfactory' category with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 72 at 4 pm, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed.
According to the CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'satisfactory', 101 to 200 'moderate', 201 to 300 'poor', 301 to 400 'very poor', and 401 to 500 'severe'. PTI NSM VN VN

According to a PTI report, the earthquake struck near Avacha Bay, around 125 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a major city with a population of nearly 180,000. It occurred at a depth of around 20 km, and its power was strong enough to generate waves several metres high that inundated coastal areas and disrupted infrastructure. Russia, Japan, the US, and Canada began immediate evacuation efforts, especially in vulnerable coastal towns. In Hawaii, tsunami alerts coincided with the afternoon rush hour, causing major traffic congestion as sirens sounded and people rushed to higher ground. Schools in the region cancelled all after-school activities, and local authorities warned of dangerous waves. In northern Japan, a tsunami wave of 50 cm was recorded at the port of Ishinomaki, with several areas observing sea-level surges. Although no major injuries have been reported so far, precautionary evacuations were carried out across the region. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for Hawaii, stating that the waves had the potential to damage coastlines across the islands. Authorities in Oregon and British Columbia also issued advisories, warning residents to stay away from beaches, marinas, and ports. Emergency services confirmed that while several individuals required medical assistance, no serious injuries had been recorded. The Kuril Islands, particularly Severo-Kurilsk, also experienced tsunami activity, prompting residents to evacuate to higher ground. This was the strongest earthquake recorded in the Kamchatka region since 1952, when a 9.0-magnitude quake devastated the area and generated 9-metre-high waves that reached Hawaii. Why Kamchatka Is Prone To Earthquakes The Kamchatka Peninsula lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for its intense seismic and volcanic activity. The Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Okhotsk Microplate here at a rate of around 86 mm per year, making the region highly susceptible to megathrust earthquakes. The quake on July 30 occurred along this subduction zone, and its relatively shallow depth helped trigger the tsunami. Aftershocks as powerful as 6.9 magnitude have since been recorded, and geologists warn that tremors could continue for weeks. The quake caused damage to buildings, and cars swayed in the streets in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which also had power outages and mobile phone service failures. Russian news agencies quoted the regional Health Ministry as saying that several people sought medical help in Kamchatka after the earthquake, but no serious injuries were reported. A video, shared by the Russian Television, showed tsunami waves hitting the shore in Russia's Severo-Kurilsk. The description also mentioned that the tsunami caused massive flooding and damage there. Among the world's strongest recorded quakes, today's earthquake in Russia appeared to be the strongest anywhere in the world since the March 2011 earthquake off northeast Japan that was 9.0 magnitude and caused a massive tsunami that set off meltdowns at a nuclear power plant. Ferries connecting Hokkaido and Aomori on the northern tip of Japan's Honshu island were suspended, as well as those connecting Tokyo and nearby islands, and some local train operations were suspended or delayed, according to operators. Sendai Airport temporarily closed its runway. A tsunami of 50 centimetres (1.6 feet) was detected at the Ishinomaki port in northern Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. This was the highest measurement so far among several locations around northern Japan.
