‘I've been clean for a week!': Reddit is now home to support groups for people addicted to AI chatbots

Fast Company6 days ago
In recent years, people have welcomed AI into their lives with open arms: as personal assistants, friends, therapists, even lovers. But one concern with having a chatbot in your pocket is that it can be hard to ignore. Reddit support groups are springing up for those struggling with chatbot addiction.
404 Media interviewed one self-confessed addict who had been staying up well into the night, compulsively talking to chatbots on Character.AI. 'The more I chatted with the bot, it felt as if I was talking to an actual friend of mine,' the 18-year-old told journalist Ella Chakarian. 'Most people will probably just look at you and say, 'How could you get addicted to a literal chatbot?''
Now addicts are trying to break the cycle. Forums such as r/Character_AI_Recovery, which has more than 900 members, and r/ChatbotAddiction are serving as support groups for those struggling.
'While I have deleted the app, I keep going back to the website— it's practically reflex to me now, clicking back into my character ai tab. I hate it,' one post on r/Character_AI_Recovery read. 'Nobody else knows about this addiction I have except myself because it's humiliating.' Another wrote: 'I'm on my probably hundredth attempt of quitting.'
Others use the group to share their wins and hold themselves accountable. 'I've been clean for a week!' one posted. Another wrote: 'Been off three days now and everything's going well, but I have this feeling that I won't be able to get away from character ai.'
Character.ai says it's striving to strike a balance between keeping its platform both 'engaging and safe,' especially for teens, noting that this challenge is shared across the AI industry. A company spokesperson told Fast Company, 'Engaging with characters on our site should be interactive and entertaining, but it's important for our users to remember that characters are not real people,' adding that every chat includes disclaimers to that effect.
To support younger users, Character.ai offers a suite of safety tools, including filtered content, time-use notifications, and 'Parental Insights,' the latter of which gives guardians visibility into how teens use the platform. The company says users younger than 18 interact with a separate version of its language model designed to reduce exposure to sensitive material. 'We added a number of technical protections to detect and prevent conversations about self-harm,' the spokesperson said, noting that in some cases this includes directing users to suicide prevention resources.
While some have successfully weaned themselves off the chatbots, the likelihood of relapse remains high. Some platforms even encourage it, sending follow-up emails promoting different chatbots or offering incentives like a free month's subscription to reengage users.
'I hated it whenever I'd see an email from 'the bot that had sent you a message,'' one former addict wrote. 'Or the emails telling me that a bot misses me. Just why? Isn't this parasocial enough to them?'

Nvidia stock jumps after the AI titan says it can sell some of its top chips to China again

Nvidia stock surged 5% on news that the company will be able to restart selling H20 chips to China. CEO Jensen Huang recently met with President Donald Trump to discuss AI the US' AI dominance goals. Morgan Stanley CIO Mike Wilson sees this as a highly bullish indicator for the broader AI sector. The move: Nvidia stock jumped as much as 5% on Tuesday morning, rising to $172.39 a share. After bottoming in April, the stock has regained momentum and is currently up more than 27% year-to-date. The chart: This embedded content is not available in your region. Why: The company said that the US government will clear it to start shipping its H20 chips to China again. In a July 14 blog post, Nvidia announced that it had begun filing applications to resume selling the H20 GPU in China. "The U.S. government has assured NVIDIA that licenses will be granted, and NVIDIA hopes to start deliveries soon," it added. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently met with policymakers in both the US and China, including President Donald Trump, to discuss the importance of supporting artificial intelligence infrastructure. Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent said in an interview on Tuesday morning that multiple Chinese firms are currently at work on similar chips, which could pose a threat to America's AI dominance. This decision is a stark contrast from the Trump administration's previous position on Chinese trade relations. In April 2025, NVDA stock fell as the White House announced strict controls on selling AI-enabling chips to China. What it means: Morgan Stanley CIO and chief US equity strategist Mike Wilson said he sees the development as a highly bullish indicator for the broader AI sector. He said that the AI capital expenditure (capex) cycle has been significant for the market's recovery, although it often doesn't receive much attention. "This deal is just more fuel to that fire," he said. Wilson also noted that the new Chinese revenue would be a "huge, positive kick to margins" for Nvidia. Reports indicate that Chinese firms are already rushing to buy the Nvidia chip when H20 sales resume. Reddit Launches New Age Checking Requirements in the UK

This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. Reddit has announced that it will begin verifying user ages in the U.K. before enabling access to restricted subreddits, in line with evolving U.K. laws, which could also expand to other regions. In the U.K., the new Online Safety Act requires that all platforms implement measures to prevent children from accessing age-inappropriate content. As a result, beginning this week, Reddit says that it will begin verifying user ages, via third-party platform Persona, to abide by these new regulations. As explained by Reddit: 'Reddit was built on the principle that you shouldn't need to share personal information to participate in meaningful discussions. Unlike platforms that are identity-based and cater to the famous (or those that want to become famous), Reddit has always favored upvoting great posts and comments by people who use whimsical usernames and not their real name. These conversations are often more candid and real than those that force you to share your real-world identity. However, while we still don't want to know who you are on Reddit, there are certainly situations where it would be helpful if we knew a little more about you.' For example, whether you're actually a human being. Reddit recently found itself in the firing line after it was revealed that researchers had unleashed a swarm of AI bots into the r/changemyview subreddit, in order to test whether AI bots were better at swaying people's opinions than actual humans (note: they are). Which produced some interesting findings, but Reddit users were less-than-enthused about being manipulated by AI bots, without any knowledge or note about those interactions. Reddit has since been working on various solutions to address this, with identity checks, via a third party, now viewed as another option to assure people of humanity. Though age checking is the main focus, while Reddit also notes that the U.K. is not alone on this front, with a growing number of jurisdictions now developing laws that will require platforms to verify the ages of their users. As such, this is likely an inevitable, broader shift either way, and Reddit's just getting ahead of it, and killing two birds with one stone, with all users, in all regions, set to potentially be subject to the same. 'We've tried to do this in a way that protects the privacy of UK redditors. To verify your age, we partner with a trusted third-party provider (Persona) who performs the verification on either an uploaded selfie or a photo of your government ID. Reddit will not have access to the uploaded photo, and Reddit will only store your verification status along with the birthdate you provided so you won't have to re-enter it each time you try to access restricted content. Persona promises not to retain the photo for longer than 7 days and will not have access to your Reddit data such as the subreddits you visit.' Your birthdate also won't be visible to other users or advertisers, and will only be used to support safety features and age-appropriate experiences on Reddit. Video age-checking has emerged as the most accurate and workable solution for age verification, with the Australian government also testing the same to align with its coming age restrictions on social media use. Though Reddit has also reportedly explored the use of eye-scanning to detect user identity. That could be a more viable option in future, but right now, Reddit's going with video selfie checks to ensure it aligns with local requirements. Which will be criticized by Redditors, but again, could be an inevitable change either way. Though it is interesting to see Reddit go from the app that exposed thousands of celebrity nudes, to the first platform to implement more thorough age checks.
