Russell Martin looks set to win race to become new Rangers head coach
The apparently imminent appointment is the latest in a series of major developments at Ibrox.
An American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises secured a majority shareholding on Friday and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell officially began work on Monday.
Thelwell stated on his first day that the recruitment of a new head coach would come to a conclusion 'in the coming days'.
Outgoing Real Madrid assistant manager Davide Ancelotti and former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard – who reportedly pulled out of the running – were also among the leading candidates.
Martin has been without a club since being sacked by Southampton in December after a 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham left Saints bottom of the Premier League on five points after 16 matches.
The 39-year-old had secured promotion in his first season in charge thanks to a Championship play-off final win against Leeds.
The ex-Peterborough and Norwich captain began his managerial career in November 2019 when he stepped up from MK Dons' playing squad to take charge of his team.

Martin steered the Dons clear of relegation danger before the pandemic struck and his side finished 13th in Sky Bet League One in what proved to be his only full campaign in charge.
Martin moved to Swansea in August 2021 after the Welsh club made an official approach to MK Dons on the eve of their season opener, leading them to 15th and then 10th-placed finishes in the Championship before moving to Southampton.
Martin's firm commitment to possession-based football drew some criticism as Saints struggled in the top flight and he defended his approach days before the fateful meeting with Ange Postecoglou's Spurs side.
'I get criticised for the same thing (as Postecoglou),' said Martin.
'About being stubborn and all that stuff. But if you believe in something and it's taken you a certain way in life then to deviate too far from that is crazy.
'I can't speak for him but we are also adapting. We adapt shape, approach, personnel, but with the same consistency about what is important for us, with the same concept of the game. We can't deviate too far from that otherwise we become nothing, really.'
Martin now looks set to take his principles up against another purveyor of possession-based football and one of his predecessors as Swansea manager, Brendan Rodgers, whose Celtic side recently won their 13th title in 14 years.
Although Rangers have only won three major trophies since emerging from the Ibrox liquidation crisis of 2012, Martin will have a good grasp of the fans' demands and expectations, which have been raised by the takeover and the promise of a £20million investment in the playing side.
Martin spent the second half of the 2017-18 season on loan from Norwich at Rangers, playing under caretaker managers Graeme Murty and then Jimmy Nicholl.
His appearances included a 4-0 Scottish Cup semi-final defeat and 5-0 loss against a Rodgers-led Celtic side as Rangers finished third in the Premiership.

Stuart Pearce tells Man Utd and Arsenal to sign 'magnificent' 20-goal forward
Stuart Pearce has 'no doubt' that Manchester United and Arsenal have been looking at a deal to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford this summer. Wissa, who mainly operates as a centre-forward but can also play as a left winger, scored 20 goals for Brentford last season across all competitions. The 28-year-old DR Congo star was linked to Tottenham last month, with Spurs now under the management of former Bees boss Thomas Frank. But Pearce feels Wissa would be a 'major asset' for the likes of United and Arsenal if they were to recruit him in the current summer transfer window. Footballer's career ended prematurely because of unnecessary procedure
Ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, 39, had surgery after he broke his left leg during a match against Birmingham City in April 2013. He alleges that during the operation to fix his leg, the surgeon, Professor James Calder, also performed procedures, which included cleaning out the joint and removing some cartilage, that 'gave rise to inflammation', and sped up the development of osteoarthritis in his ankle. He also says the surgeon failed to properly tell him the risks associated with the procedure. Prof Calder is defending the claims and denies that there was a lack of time for the footballer to weigh up his options. In written submissions, Simeon Maskrey KC, representing Ebanks-Blake, said on Wednesday: 'The onset of symptoms and the development and acceleration of osteoarthritis brought the claimant's footballing career to a premature end.' Mr Maskrey said the footballer had suffered a previous ankle injury and, although this resulted in some 'stiffness', he had learned to adapt and it caused him no pain. He continued: 'The proposed procedure carried with it the significant risk that it would render the ankle symptomatic.' Mr Maskrey also told the court the surgery consent process was 'wholly inadequate', and Ebanks-Blake was given 'no opportunity of considering his options'. He added that had his client been told that 'wait and see' was a reasonable option, which ran the risk of the ankle becoming symptomatic and needing later intervention, 'he would have taken that risk'. Mr Maskrey said it was for the court to decide whether Ebanks-Blake 'was provided with sufficient information to provide informed consent'. Martin Forde KC, representing the surgeon, said in written submissions: 'It is arguable that if Professor Calder had done anything other than what he did do, he would have been negligent for not dealing with the loose fragments and unstable cartilage.' He continued: 'The defendant's position is that through his judgment and skill he prolonged the claimant's career. 'The claimant's case quite clearly is that his career was curtailed.' Mr Forde also told the court that Ebanks-Blake's witness statement is the earliest indication of his 'dissatisfaction', and before this, he had made positive comments about his recovery from injury. He added: 'Far from curtailing the claimant's career, the defendant will argue that his clinical skills prolonged the career of a professional player who suffered a very serious injury.' Mr Forde told the court that after the surgery, Ebanks-Blake continued playing football for a number of years, retiring in 2019. The case before Mrs Justice Lambert is due to conclude on Tuesday July 22.
