Allahabad High Court reopens Rahul Gandhi's citizenship case after new evidence

New Indian Express11 hours ago
LUCKNOW: Adding a new dimension to the public interest petition concerning Rahul Gandhi's alleged British citizenship, petitioner S. Vignesh Shishir has filed a review petition in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. He has submitted new videos and documents reportedly obtained from London, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan.
Previously, on 14 May 2025, the High Court had directed the Central Government to act on the matter. In response, the Citizenship Wing of the Ministry of Home Affairs sent a formal request to the British Government via the Indian Embassy, seeking details about Rahul Gandhi's citizenship and passport.
According to the petitioner, the UK Government has since provided the requested citizenship information to Indian authorities, and the petitioner has been notified accordingly.
The case is currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) Anti-Corruption Branch-II in New Delhi.
Rahul Gandhi is facing allegations of violating his constitutional oath and submitting a misleading election manifesto by allegedly withholding information regarding foreign citizenship.

‘Enact separate, comprehensive law criminalising custodial torture'

Madurai: A collective of around 150 representatives from various civil society organizations, human rights activists, writers, and artists, among others, on Saturday released a document, demanding urgent reforms and highlighting the need for a separate and comprehensive law criminalising custodial torture and death. The document, sent by email to the state govt, comes in the wake of the recent Sivaganga custodial death of temple security guard B Ajith Kumar at Thiruppuvanam. The collective, under the banner of 'Coalition of People's Movements Against Police Violence', observed that while govt officials have consistently stated that custodial torture is illegal, there remains a belief within the police force that truth can only be extracted from suspects through physical or psychological torture. "Indian law does not explicitly define 'torture'. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 125 (8) criminalizes unlawful confinement for the purpose of obtaining confessions or retrieving property, with a maximum punishment of three years. However, this provision is inadequate to address serious crimes such as torture, custodial deaths, and extrajudicial killings. Therefore, a separate and comprehensive anti-torture law is imperative at the state level," they added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Fastest Selling Plots of Mysore from 40L | 40+ Amenities PurpleBrick Learn More Undo R Murali, one of the coordinators of the coalition, said that they have put forth 13 demands, including establishing an independent authority to handle complaints against the police, and ensure accountability at district level by involving senior police officers in cases of custodial violence. "Since the investigating officers are often the same persons who register FIRs, this leads to bias, suppression, or distortion of facts. The independent authority should comprise retired judges, govt legal professionals, and qualified human rights activists," he added. The coalition further demanded more accountability from the Tamil Nadu govt in Ajith Kumar's custodial death case. The state govt should initiate its own independent investigation into the case, instead of depending solely on the CBI, they urged. Other coordinators of the coalition, advocate John Vincent and R Kumaran, called for publicising the recommendations of the Fifth Police Commission, chaired by retired justice C T Selvam, and to form a review panel of retired judges and human rights activists to assess and strengthen the recommendations.

Tulsi to titan: Performance politics

In the great gladiatorial arena of Indian public life, few figures have fought harder, flared brighter, or fallen faster than 49-year-old Smriti Zubin Irani. Fewer still possess the gall and guile to return with such operatic flair. The reboot of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (KSBKBT), premiering July 29, marks Irani's renaissance. It's not regression; it's re-entry. A recalibrated cultural conquest. Comebacks in politics arrive cloaked in symbolism, charged with subtext, and choreographed for resonance. Hence, the Tulsi-Irani redux isn't nostalgia; it's narrative warfare. Once Tulsi was the sanskari sovereign of Indian television. Now, back to being Tulsi again, Irani is showing off a shrewd recalibration of power, presence, and persona. Born in 1976 in a modest Delhi household, her political ascent was not bestowed; it was built by her from scratch. From wiping tables at McDonald's to ruling the primetime as Tulsi Virani in Ekta Kapoor's cultural colossus, she embodied middle-class mythos with magnetic precision. But ambition is a hungry beast. Irani, never one to be typecast, pivoted to politics in 2003, entering the BJP without pedigree but with panache. The nation scoffed. The party watched. And she worked relentlessly, rhetorically, ruthlessly.

Boeing, Air India failed us, not pilots: Uddhav Sena MP on crash report

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Saturday accused Boeing, GE and Air India of "failing" and gave a clean chit to the pilots, after the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) released its preliminary report on the Ahmedabad plane crash that killed 260 people."....It seems clear that Boeing (manufacturer), GE (engine) and Tata Air India (operator) failed us, not our pilots," Chaturvedi said in a post on X. advertisementHighlighting the findings of the report, she said, "Both engines shut down midair within seconds after takeoff - fuel cutoff switches moved from RUN to CUTOFF one after another" and that "no immediate sabotage evidence, but a known FAA advisory on possible fuel switch flaw existed -- inspections not done by Air India". In another post, Chaturvedi slammed a British media house for claiming that the "pilots cut off fuel to the engines, no fault of the engines" and said, "Boeing Bacchao Corporation aka BBC". BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy, himself a commercial pilot, said an initial report came and it mentioned technical reasons and highlighted the steps taken by the pilots according to the said the aircraft reached a speed of 180 knots after taking off, which showed that it was capable to fly also noted that both the fuel switches were found to be on after the crash."Only time will tell what happened exactly," he leader Brinda Karat said people should not speculate on what had happened till the final report came as it would be an insult to those who lost their dear ones."I do not think we should be commenting on it. In fact, I would like to appeal generally to people not to comment on this. We have to wait for the final report.""And for people who have no idea about these technicalities to go on commenting on who is responsible and to speculate on it - I think this is insulting to those who lost their loved ones on that flight. So I would say, stop this speculation and let us wait for the report," she preliminary AAIB report said seconds before Air India flight 171 crashed while ascending from Ahmedabad on June 12, the fuel control that switched off both its engines were cut off, suggesting a catastrophic pilot error in the cockpit of the Boeing 787 15-page report into the disaster revealed that the fuel-control switches of the two engines moved from the "run" to the "cutoff" position within a second, leading to an immediate loss of the cockpit voice recording, one pilot was heard asking the other why he cut off the fuel, while the other denied having done AAIB report, released early on Saturday, neither concluded on any reason for the switches moving nor apportioned explicit blame for the also did not identify the pilots in the voice recording. But it said no fault was found in the aircraft, leaving only the possibility of a pilot Airlines Pilots Association of India has said the investigation was "shrouded in secrecy", appears to be biased against the pilots and has come to a conclusion report, however, referenced a 2018 airworthiness bulletin by the US Federal Aviation Administration that said fuel switches were installed on Boeing 737s, a smaller model, "with the locking feature disengaged". The locking mechanism was similar on various Boeing aeroplane models, including certain 787s, it said.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Air India#Ahmedabad Plane Crash#Shiv Sena-Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray
