New Toyota RAV4 PHEV Copies Mitsubishi's Homework – And Made It Better

Yahoo23-05-2025
The Toyota RAV4 is finally here and is now completely hybrid, which is not surprising considering the success of the automaker's electrified models. Now in its sixth generation, America's bestselling nameplate (yes, even outselling the Ford F-150 in 2024) is flush with options, but all of them will be electrified in one way or another.
There's a lot to unpack about the latest Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive, whichdiffers on every continent. However, the improvements on the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) versions particularly stand out in the sea of competing nameplates. Toyota practically copied Mitsubishi's homework for its new RAV4 PHEV – and somehow made everything better.

Never mind the GR Corolla-beating 320-horsepower output of the RAV PHEV – the new plug-in RAV4 debuts Toyota's sixth-generation PHEV powertrain, which also introduces DC charging to the popular nameplate for the first time. Available for the XSE and Woodland grades, this puts the RAV4 among the few PHEV models with fast-charging capabilities, with the ability to recharge from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes via a CCS port.
In comparison, the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV also comes with DC fast charging at a slightly slower rate (38 minutes to 80%), but it has an aging and unpopular CHAdeMO standard, which is practically unusable in the US. Of course, charging times can vary depending on many factors, but the port alone does put the RAV4 PHEV ahead of its Mitsubishi rival.
Worse, the RAV4 PHEV comes standard with an 11-kW onboard AC charger, while the Outlander PHEV only comes with a 3.7-kW AC charger. Without disclosing the figures, the Toyota will definitely have faster charging times at home.

One of the advantages of PHEVs over non-plug-in ones is the capability to run on pure electricity without burning a single drop of fuel. For 2026, Toyota estimates the RAV PHEV to have an EV-only range of 50 miles – an improvement over the previous 42 miles of the outgoing models.
That figure is also better than the Outlander PHEV, which has a paltry all-electric range of 38 miles. While a difference of just 12 miles might sound petty for some, it does matter for those who will use the SUV mostly within the city to take advantage of the gasoline-free usage. Without disclosing the exact capacity, Toyota appears to deliver more efficiency and utility from the battery of its sixth-generation PHEV powertrain.

The Nissan Z Is Crushing the Toyota Supra With Triple Sales

The Nissan Z got off to a slow start, partly due to production delays and supply chain disruptions caused by the microchip shortage. Dealer markups didn't help either. But that's all in the past. In 2025, the rear-wheel-drive coupe is performing better than ever. Demand more than doubled in the first quarter, surging 108% to 1,635 units. For the first half of the year, deliveries jumped 160.1% to 3,789 cars. Meanwhile, the Toyota Supra is having a much tougher year. The BMW-engineered sports car racked up just 1,231 sales in the first six months of 2025. The number represents a 17.7% drop compared to the January–June 2024 period. Yes, the Z is outselling the Supra by a 3-to-1 margin. Looking ahead, Nissan won't have to worry about the Supra much longer. Photo by: Toyota Toyota is pulling the plug after the 2026 model year, with a Final Edition limited to 1,300 units. However, a sixth-generation model is already in the works , so the gap between generations is likely to be shorter than before. Enthusiasts in the U.S. certainly won't have to wait another two decades like they did between the Mk4 and Mk5. While the Z and Supra continue to lock horns, the Ford Mustang remains far ahead. Despite a 14.2% decline through June, the pony car still tallied 23,551 sales, more than four times the combined total of the Z and Supra. We haven't forgotten about Nissan's other performance car, the GT-R. Only 37 units were sold in the first half of the year, down 75.5%. That's hardly surprising, as U.S. production ended last October after the final Skyline Edition and Takumi Edition models. Japan closed its order books in late February, signaling the end of the R35. A new GT-R is planned, but it won't arrive anytime soon. If the radical Hyper Force concept is any indication, it could be fully electric. ‘How to Get 100 MPG In Any Vehicle:' Mechanic Starts a Toyota Yaris. Then He Pops the Hood

A viral video of a Toyota Yaris' engine has some people amazed by Toyota's reliability—and others simply amazed. Miles Kurth ( @mileskurth ) recently posted a Facebook Reel of a Toyota Yaris running on just one of its four cylinders. Get the best news, reviews, columns, and more delivered straight to your inbox, daily. back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use . Kurth's video begins with him walking towards the Yaris with its hood popped open. The engine rattles loudly in the clip. As he approached, you can see that three of the ignition coils aren't plugged in, and the Yaris is running on a single cylinder. 'Did y'all know the Yaris can run on one [expletive] cylinder?' Kurth says. 'Look at that.' He picks up three of the cables meant to connect to the other ignition coils, demonstrating that they are indeed unplugged. A text overlay on the post reads, 'How to get 100 MPG in any car 101.' A Feature, Not a Bug? As unbelievable as his video may seem, Kurth isn't the only one to document a similar experience with a Toyota. A member of an Alltrac forum asked for help because their 1990 Toyota Celica was running on one cylinder, and they couldn't figure out how to get the other three to fire. After many attempts and posts about those attempts to fix the issue, the Celica owner said they figured it out: they'd placed the spark plugs in the wrong sequence. 'The plug wires were in the wrong order the whole time. I hooked them up according to the firing order instead of just going 1 through 4 like any normal intelligent person would do,' they wrote. Toyota's reliability is well documented. writes, 'When it comes to automotive reliability, few brands can hold a candle to Toyota. Known for their durability and longevity, Toyota engines have built a reputation that resonates with car owners worldwide.' The outlet says the key to this fortitude is rooted in the 'simplicity' of Toyota's engineering philosophy. 'Many of their most reliable engines feature straightforward designs that minimize the number of components,' it reports. 'This not only reduces the likelihood of failure but also makes repairs more manageable for mechanics and DIY enthusiasts alike.' The brand's decision to implement incremental upgrades and improvements, rather than make drastic changes, has helped contribute to its reputation for dependability. Consumer Reports has consistently ranked Toyota and its luxury counterpart, Lexus , as two of the most dependable auto manufacturers in the world. Can a Car Run on One Cylinder? Others online have also discussed the problems that occur when they run an engine with compromised cylinders. People on a Reddit cars thread cited power loss, unpleasant driving, and long-term engine damage. Kurth's assertion that the Yaris running on one cylinder would get improved gas mileage is tongue-in-cheek. As the car blog Small World Auto Repair notes, automakers design smaller engines to use less fuel. Having fewer cylinders means they displace less air and fuel mixture during combustion. Ultimately, the outlet says 'this can lead to lower fuel consumption.' Because the Yaris is powering fewer cylinders, less air is being displaced, and the combustion cycle is using less gasoline. However, just because an engine is smaller doesn't necessarily mean it's going to burn less gasoline. Auto manufacturers use technology like turbocharging to boost engine performance whilst maintaining fuel efficiency. On a practical note, if even one of the cylinders in your engine is misfiring, you should address it immediately. Failing to do so can lead to decreased performance, rough idling, and increased emissions. It can also cause long-term engine damage. '0-60 in 3 Days' Kurth's post inspired many comments touting Toyotas' longevity. One person said of the Yaris, 'It will still serve your family for 3 generations.' Someone else quipped, 'Now just switch to another cylinder every 100,000 miles and you're good bro.' Another joked, 'It's a toyota, it'll run on no cylinder.' Others pointed out that the Yaris might run on one cylinder, but it won't run fast. '0-60 in 3 days,' one remarked. 'Did you know that it can run the quarter mile in 5 to 7 business days,' another commented. One person cautioned against firing an engine with inoperable cylinders. 'Until it catches fire from all that fuel building in the catalytic converter,' they wrote. 'Ask me how I know.' Toyota delays US electric vehicle production

Toyota has announced a delay in its electric vehicle (EV) production plans in the US, opting to prioritise manufacturing capacity for the in-demand Grand Highlander SUV. The Japanese automaker will now begin producing a new electric SUV in Georgetown, Kentucky, in 2028, a shift from the original plan to start in 2027 at its Princeton, Indiana, facility. The strategic move will enable Toyota to increase the production of the Grand Highlander, available as a petrol-only or hybrid petrol-electric model. The delay in EV production also aligns with a potential decrease in US EV demand following the Senate's legislation to end tax credits for electric vehicle purchases. Despite the overall rise in EV sales in the US, Toyota's all-electric sales lagged in 2024, with fewer than 30,000 units sold, contrasting with the surge in hybrid petrol-electric sales. The Grand Highlander has proven especially popular, with Toyota selling over 11,500 units in the last month and dealers maintaining only a three-day supply. David Christ, the head of Toyota brand sales in the US, emphasised the success of the Grand Highlander, calling it the "fastest-turning product in the lineup,' as reported by Bloomberg. The company remains committed to its electric future, with plans to offer seven EVs in the US market by mid-2027, including two SUVs to be produced at the Georgetown plant. Last month, Toyota Motor suggested it is willing to sell US-made vehicles in Japan through its domestic dealer networks to help the Japanese government in its trade negotiations with the US government.
