Sabah CM: No state polls yet as GRS leaders must first decide on assembly dissolution
Hajiji, who is also the Chief Minister, said that while he holds the prerogative to advise Tun Musa on the matter, he prefers for the decision to be made collectively, in line with GRS' commitment to joint decision-making.
'We are in GRS, and any decision must go through the Supreme Council. I will discuss and inform the party presidents when the time comes to dissolve the assembly,' he told reporters after closing the Parti Bersatu Sabah-Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (PBS-STAR) Convention here yesterday.
However, he did not indicate when the discussion with the Supreme Council would be held. When asked whether he would allow the assembly to dissolve automatically this November, Hajiji said the matter would be considered carefully.
On July 6, Bernama reported that the 16th Sabah State Assembly would automatically dissolve on Nov 11 if not dissolved earlier, according to speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya.
GRS comprises Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, PBS, STAR, Parti Maju Sabah, United Sabah National Organisation (USNO), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah and Parti Cinta Sabah.
Commenting on speculation that GRS may contest the 17th Sabah state election independently, Hajiji said the matter would also be discussed at the Supreme Council level.
Meanwhile, Hajiji described the PBS-STAR Convention as a historic milestone that strengthens local political cooperation and signals GRS' readiness to face the state election with a strong, united, and credible leadership lineup.
He said the close collaboration between the two local parties reflects political maturity, prioritising the interests of the people and the state over political differences.
'This convention not only reflects the spirit of unity among local parties with their own histories and principles, but also demonstrates that GRS is ready to move forward as a coalition that truly represents the aspirations of the people of Sabah,' he said. — Bernama

Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has called on Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to steer clear of any electoral alliance with Barisan Nasional-Umno in the coming 17th state election. LDP president Datuk Chin Su Phin pointed out the importance of maintaining good relations with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, regardless of the state election outcome. 'It is imperative that the coalition or party that wins has an amicable relationship with its federal counterparts,' Chin said following a unanimous decision by the LDP Supreme Council, Sunday. He said the GRS is likely to negotiate seat distribution with PH for the state polls, but pointed out that the federal coalition must have genuine commitment to working with GRS. He suggested PH limit itself to contesting no more than 20 seats. Chin said that if negotiations fail, both coalitions may contest independently in a friendly match with government formation discussions taking place post-election. He expressed particular concern about DAP's ambitions to contest six to eight Chinese-majority seats, saying this could squeeze out Chinese-based component parties within GRS. Addressing Chinese voters specifically, Chin cautioned against supporting Parti Warisan despite strong local party sentiment in Chinese-majority constituencies. He said Warisan's limited appeal beyond Chinese voters particularly among the Kadazandusun community and in Malay seats makes it unlikely to form government even if it wins all six Chinese-majority seats. 'If Warisan fails to form the State Government, Chinese voters will inevitably be labelled as the opposition,' he said, urging the community to exercise wisdom in their voting decisions. He called for continued GRS governance, citing political stability and economic growth under the current administration, adding that the government changes typically result in policy shifts that deter investment and hinder economic progress for two to three years. Malaysia acts to avoid US sanctions amid escalating global AI chip war
KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) has announced that all exports, transhipments, and transit of high-performance AI chips of US origin now require a Strategic Trade Permit, effective immediately. The new requirement falls under Section 12 of the Strategic Trade Act 2010, which serves as a catch-all control provision for items not explicitly listed in the Strategic Items List. Companies and individuals must notify authorities at least 30 days before moving these AI chips if they know or suspect potential misuse or restricted activities. "This initiative serves to close regulatory gaps while Malaysia undertakes further review on the inclusion of high-performance AI chips of US origin into the SIL (Strategic Items List) of the STA 2010 (Strategic Trade Act)," the ministry said in a statement. Malaysia has warned it will take strict legal action against any violations of the Strategic Trade Act 2010 or related laws. The ministry emphasised that while Malaysia supports investments and trade aligned with international best practices, all entities must comply with relevant international obligations to avoid secondary sanctions. Miti also reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to maintaining a safe, secure, transparent, and rules-based trading environment with all trade partners. Last week, Bloomberg reported that the US plans to restrict shipments of advanced AI chips to Malaysia to prevent them from being diverted to China, as part of a broader crackdown on semiconductor smuggling. Despite Malaysia's previous pledges to tighten import scrutiny, chip exports to the country have surged, drawing US attention and prompting proposed curbs that may include temporary exemptions for American and allied firms operating there.
