Sadanandan is married to Vanitha Rani, a retired teacher, and they have a daughter, Yamunabharathi S.
Sadanandan lost both his legs in 1994, when he was the RSS sarkaryavahak of Kannur, in a brutal attack by alleged CPM cadres.
The assault, which occurred in Uravachal village on the night of January 25, 1994, involved assailants pinning him down and hacking off both legs, which were later found discarded nearby.
Though police arrived and rushed him to the hospital, his legs could not be reattached due to lack of facilities.
At the time, Sadanandan was a teacher at Kuzhikkal LP School.
Despite the horrific attack, Sadanandan continued his association with RSS and BJP, walking with the help of prosthetic legs. He went on to contest elections from Koothuparamba Assembly constituency in 2016 and 2021 as a BJP candidate.
Sadanandan had initially been aligned with the SFI, the student wing of the CPM, before joining the RSS in 1984.
He later held several key Sangh roles including Sarkaryavah of Kannur district, Baudhik Pramukh of Kozhikode and Thrissur Mahanagar, and Vibhag Baudhik Pramukh of Ernakulam.
After the attack, he resumed teaching at Sri Durga Vilasam HSS in Peramangalam, Thrissur, and retired in April 2020. He also served as state president of Deseeya Adhyapaka Parishad, an RSS-affiliated teachers' organization.
'Epitome of courage': PM Narendra Modi praises Sadanandan
Reacting to the Rajya Sabha nomination, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Sadanandan, calling his life 'the epitome of courage and refusal to bow to injustice.' In a post on X, Modi added, 'Violence and intimidation couldn't deter his spirit towards national development.
His efforts as a teacher and social worker are commendable.'
Sadanandan, in his response, expressed happiness and said the nomination was a step towards strengthening BJP's efforts in Kerala. He refrained from framing the decision as retaliation against political violence, instead calling for peace.
'Let us view those days as a nightmare and forget it. Several party workers like me were maimed and many mothers and widows lost their dear ones. We worked hard to end the culture of 'eye for an eye'. There is now peace in Kannur, and I want it to continue,' he said.
His nomination is seen as a symbolic recognition of political violence survivors and an attempt to bring the issue of Kannur's decades-long political bloodshed to the national stage, while also energizing the BJP cadre in Kerala.

"Like every time, the BJP system kept protecting the accused - and forced an innocent daughter to set herself on fire," he said. "This is not suicide, it is an organised murder by the system," Gandhi alleged. "Modi ji, be it Odisha or Manipur - the daughters of the country are burning, breaking down, dying. And you? Are sitting silent. The country does not want your silence, it wants answers," the former Congress president said. The daughters of India want security and justice, Gandhi added. The woman was first admitted to the Balasore district hospital and then shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment. She was undergoing treatment in the ICU, Department of Burn Centre, according to officials. "The patient was resuscitated with IV fluids, IV antibiotics, intubated and put on mechanical ventilation. Despite adequate resuscitation and all possible supportive management, including renal replacement therapy at the Burns ICU, she could not be revived and was declared clinically dead at 11:46 pm on July 14," the Department of Burn Centre said in a statement.

CM Stalin launches scheme to deliver govt services at citizens' doorstep
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the ambitious 'Ungaludan Stalin (With You, Stalin)' initiative in Chidambaram, Cuddalore district on Tuesday. The scheme aims to deliver a wide range of government services directly to citizens at their doorstep, especially those in need of urgent redressal or assistance. The programme kicked off with the Chief Minister inaugurating a special grievance redressal camp, part of a statewide initiative involving over 10,000 such camps -- 3,768 in urban areas and 6,232 in rural regions. The scheme, scheduled to run until November, is designed to cover all districts and panchayats in Tamil Nadu. As part of the campaign, more than one lakh trained volunteers visited households across the state in advance to distribute awareness materials, collect grievances, and inform residents about the dates and services available at the camps. These camps offer services from 13 departments in urban areas and 15 departments in rural areas, covering 43 and 46 types of services, respectively. Citizens can apply for various welfare schemes, land records, caste and income certificates, corrections in official documents, old age pensions, and more. Revenue Secretary P. Amudha stated that all applications received through the camps would be resolved within 45 days. If citizens are unsatisfied with the outcome or if their application is rejected, they will have the option to reapply or seek clarification. To ensure smooth execution and coordination, four senior IAS officers -- J. Radhakrishnan, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Dheeraj Kumar, and P. Amudha -- have been appointed as official spokespersons and supervisory authorities. In Chennai alone, 400 camps were scheduled across 200 wards, while in Coimbatore, the programme is being implemented in four phases with 334 camps. Similarly, Nilgiris district will host 146 camps in three phases. The launch ceremony at Chidambaram was held with tight security, attended by thousands of people and party cadres. CM Stalin also paid floral tributes at the memorials of K. Kamaraj and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as part of the inaugural event. While the government has positioned the scheme as a transformative citizen-service model, opposition parties, including the BJP's Tamilisai Soundararajan, have criticised it as a political gimmick ahead of the 2026 elections.

Former J&K deputy CM Kavinder Gupta appointed Ladakh's LG

'Ladakh is a border region and I will try to shoulder all responsibilities while taking on board the administration and local people,' he said. Gupta informed that on Saturday he received a call from the Prime Minister, who asked him about the new responsibility. 'I gave my consent to the PM,' he said, adding that for the first time anyone from Jammu would be heading Ladakh as LG. In 2014, Gupta was elected as MLA from the Gandhi Nagar assembly constituency. He became the first speaker from BJP in the J&K Assembly, where he served from March 2015 to April 2018. In April 2018, Gupta became deputy CM in the PDP–BJP coalition headed by then chief minister Mehbooba Mufti. 'Now, new responsibility has been given to me and I will try to live up to the expectations of the people,' he said. Recalling his earlier days, Gupta said that he had no political background. 'My father was an employee. I remained a student leader and worked for the youth,' he said. The change of guard comes at a time when Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance were spearheading a protracted agitation demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule to the region. Reacting to the development, president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, co-chairman of the Leh Apex Body and former minister, Chering Dorje Lakrook said, 'I personally know him as we worked in the same government. However, people of Ladakh don't know much about him and they asked me about him.' 'Let's see how he runs the administration here. We have to see how he grasped the issues and problems of the people of Ladakh. In Punjab also he served as state secretary of ABVP for three years. His father, an employee in the postal and telegraph department, was posted at various places, including Gurdaspur and later Srinagar. A native of Smailpur village in Samba district, Kavinder Gupta officially joined the BJP in 1988. In the 2002 and 2008 Assembly elections, Gupta was initially given the BJP mandate from the Jammu West assembly segment, but the party changed its candidates at the last minute. In the 2014 assembly polls, he was shifted to the Gandhi Nagar assembly segment in Jammu city—then considered a Congress stronghold—where he defeated senior Congress leader Raman Bhalla.
