Arsenal on alert as lower clause for Viktor Gyokeres is activated

Metro7 hours ago
Arsenal transfer target Viktor Gyokeres has a €60 million (£51.4m) clause in his contract with Sporting CP which has become active from July 1.
Both Arsenal and Manchester United have held extensive talks to sign Gyokeres this summer but have not reached an agreement over a transfer fee with Sporting.
Last month, Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with his counterpart at Sporting, Bernardo Palmeiro, in Menorca to discuss a deal for the striker, who finished last season with 54 goals in 52 appearances and helped the Portuguese club win the league and cup double.
However, Arsenal's initial bid worth an €55m (£46.8m) plus €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons was rejected.
Gyokeres has a €100 million (£85.1m) release clause in his contract but Sporting have been willing to sell the Sweden international for lower than that amount.

However, Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas was angered by claims that the club have agreed to sell Gyokeres for €60m (£51m) plus €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons and warned the striker's representative, Hasan Cetinkaya, that he is 'making the situation worse'.
According to A Bola, during his negotiations to bring Gyokeres to Sporting in a £20m deal from Coventry City two years ago, Cetinkaya secured an exclusive sales mandate which means that Sporting will be required to pay the agent 10 per cent of the value of any rejected offer above €60m (£51m).
Sporting have warned Cetinkaya that if the clause in Gyokeres' contract is activated, they will demand that the striker's €100m (£85.1m) release clause is met.
The Portuguese club are understood to be willing to sell Gyokeres if their €80m (£68.6m) asking price is met.
Speaking on Sunday, Varandas maintained that Gyokeres is set to leave Sporting this summer but insists the 27-year-old will not be sold below market value. More Trending
'If you ask me today, there is a strong possibility that Viktor will leave,' Varandas said.
'In the last few weeks, we have been keeping an eye on the market, I saw a player like [Martin] Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, go to Arsenal for €65 million (£55m).
'I saw two players being sold in the Premier League – Matheus Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo – forwards who do not have the quality of Viktor, in my opinion. [They] were sold for around €75 million (£64m). We are talking about players who are 26 years old.
'So, given the demands we make in relation to Viktor's value, I believe he could leave, unless he has the worst agent in the world. Which I find hard to believe, because he is one of the best footballers in the world.'

'Glad he's gone' or a 'silly sale will probably haunt us'?

We asked for your views on Kepa - who was signed for a record £71m fee for a goalkeeper - departing to Arsenal for £ are some of your comments:Stu: Saying he was a victim of his price tag is an over simplification. We had Cech and Courtois at the club at the same time. Once Cech moved on Courtois stepped up - arguably two of the greatest goalkeepers the world has seen. Then we bought Kepa. Their shoes were just too big to fill and it's been a problem ever since. He was simply the first of many goalkeeping failures Chelsea can't seem to Why sell Kepa for £5m when he is as good, if not better, than any of Chelsea's current keepers? And, especially to a London rival!Chris: Contrary to a lot of my fellow Chelsea supporters, I always rated Kepa and I still rate him higher than Sanchez and Jorgensen. Unless they bring in someone like Maignan I think Chelsea should've let him challenge as second choice and sold the aforementioned. Good Luck Kepa but not too much eh? Following the same path as Big Glad he's gone. He lost all credibility for me when he refused to be substituted when he first joined the club. The club must always come Silly sale will probably haunt us and we're giving him away. Showed last season he is back at his That door closed a while back. Not his fault he was the subject of a panic buy and the associated price tag. His refusal to come off was the breaking point for me, I would've moved him on straight away but I guess his silly salary boxed us in! Good keeper all said and How can we sell Kepa for £5m to Arsenal? I still don't believe that Sanchez is better than he is and I would rather we sold Sanchez and kept Kepa. Thanks for your service Kepa and I apologise for how you've been treated by the club in the past couple of years. I wish you I always thought Kepa to be a very fine goalkeeper. Yes he has made a number of errors in the past, however what players have not? I'm sorry to see him go. Arsenal will be well pleased. A bargain buy at £5m for a goalkeeper with his ability and with a history of winning trophies. I wish him well.

Chelsea dealt blow in pursuit of £43m transfer target

Nottingham Forest appear to have stolen a march on Chelsea in the race to sign Malick Fofana after agreeing a deal with Lyon to sign the winger. Fofana emerged as one of Lyon's brightest young stars following his arrival from Gent in January 2024, making 41 appearances across all competitions with 11 goals and six assists to his name last season. The 20-year-old also caught the eye during Lyon's Europa League campaign, but could be one of many players to leave the club this summer due to their financial troubles. Fofana is likely to command a fee in the region of £43million, with Chelsea one of several top European clubs interested. Bayern Munich and Napoli have also made contact over completing a deal for the young talent, but Fabrizio Romano reports that Forest have now struck a deal with the club. Despite that, other clubs may still have a chance as the report adds that Forest are yet to agree terms with the player. Fofana, who is under contract at Lyon until the summer of 2028, is said to be holding out on a move to a Champions League club. Chelsea are keen to add more depth in wide attacking areas and are already closing in on the signing of Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens. A deal for versatile Brighton forward Joao Pedro is also close to completion, but the club are still keen for further additions as they also consider selling Noni Madueke amid interest from Arsenal. More Trending While Fofana's arrival would add to their options out wide, William Gallas is uncertain that the 20-year-old should be the priority for his former club right now. 'Malick Fofana is a young player that is still learning and I don't think that is the right move,' Gallas told Prime Casino. 'Chelsea have a lot of forward players already and I think they need experienced defenders now. 'They have won the Conference League but that right centre-back position is the one I'd look at, not wingers.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Arsenal sign Spanish keeper Kepa from Chelsea

July 1 (Reuters) - Arsenal have signed Spaniard Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea, the Premier League side said on Tuesday, with media reporting that the club triggered a five million pounds ($6.86 million) release clause to buy the world's most expensive goalkeeper. Kepa, 30, joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 for 71 million pounds, but after winning the Europa League in 2019, the Champions League two years later, and the Club World Cup in 2022, the keeper has spent the last two seasons on loan. Last season, Kepa was Bournemouth's regular goalkeeper in the Premier League and in the previous campaign he made 20 appearances for Real Madrid, helping the Spanish club win LaLiga and the Champions League. Before joining Bournemouth last August, Kepa extended his Chelsea contract until 2026, and has signed a three-year deal with Arsenal, British media reports said, where he will wear the number 13 shirt and provide backup for David Raya. ($1 = 0.7289 pounds)
