Fire contained in Qala forest after Lebanese Army intervention

NORTH LEBANON — A fire broke out Tuesday morning in the Qala forest, located in the heights of Jurd Meshmesh in North Lebanon, at the border of the Akkar, Dennieh and Hermel regions, our correspondent in the North, reported.
The fire was eventually brought under control in the afternoon.
The area, which is particularly difficult to access and has no roads to allow fire trucks to reach the source, required the Lebanese Army to dispatch a helicopter to fight the flames. The aircraft was refueled from an artificial basin set up specifically for this purpose, supplied with water by Civil Defense with support from the Union of Jurd el-Qayta Municipalities and local tankers.
Earlier, environmental activists had called on authorities to coordinate with army command to dispatch a military helicopter to contain the fire before it spread, given the high temperatures and mountain winds.
In order to bring the fire under control, a helicopter took off from Qlayaat Air Base, while an artificial water basin had already been installed. Civil Defense vehicles arrived in the area to supply the basin with water, in coordination with members of the first responders team from the Union of Jurd al-Qayta Municipalities.
According to information from our correspondent, the cause of the incident may be linked to gunfire, a frequent cause unfortunately in these remote mountain regions. This area is home to a large concentration of Zahrani cedars and Cilician fir trees.
On July 15, under the patronage of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, the Lebanese Environment Ministry launched a $3.5 million risk management initiative aimed at reducing the risk of forest fires in vulnerable areas.
In April, Greenpeace had already warned about fires recorded in Lebanon even before the start of summer, a period usually prone to wildfires, calling them "an alarming sign of the worsening effects of climate change in the region."

Lebanese Army helicopters deployed to extinguish fire in Qala forest (Akkar district)

NORTH LEBANON —Lebanese Army helicopters were deployed at dawn Friday to battle a wildfire that has been burning for two days in the cedar and fir forests of Qala, in the highlands of Meshmesh, northern Lebanon, local sources told our correspondent. The fog covering the area on Thursday afternoon hindered the helicopters' intervention, while the dry winds that blew overnight from Thursday to Friday in the highlands fueled the spread of the flames toward Jurd al-Qaytaa. In this area, the ground is covered by a thick layer of dry grass, making it easier for the blaze to expand. The fire has already destroyed large swathes covered with centenarian trees, notably cedars and Cilician pines, as well as plants, and natural habitats for birds and wildlife. The sector had already been hit by flames on Tuesday before the fire was finally brought under control in the afternoon. Particularly hard to access and lacking roads that would allow fire trucks to reach the blaze, the region made helicopter intervention necessary. The aircraft was refueled with water from an artificial basin set up nearby, supplied by Civil Defense with the support of the Jurd al-Qayta Union of Municipalities and local tankers. Volunteers from neighboring villages and the rapid fire-fighting team of the 'Akkar Trail' Association (Darb Akkar) are also helping with operations in the field to bring the fire under control. Residents of the area are calling for an investigation to determine the causes of the increase of fires in this region, and are demanding sanctions against those responsible.

Civil Defense intervention contained the fire, which had previously destroyed agricultural areas. Another fire broke out near the headquarters of the Sunni Sharia court in Beirut, in the Tarik el-Jdideh neighborhood, according to the NNA. Firefighters worked to extinguish it. A significant fire also broke out in forested areas on the outskirts of the locality of Rahbeh, in the Jouma-Akkar region, in North Lebanon. Civil Defense teams supported by the Lebanese army intervened to try to control the fire before it spread, as temperatures exceeded 35 degrees at noon in the region. A car caught fire on the road to Bhamdoun, in the caza of Aley, our correspondent reports. This incident contributed to increased traffic on this road leading to Bekaa, on the eve of municipal elections in this region. 72 Civil Defense missions Civil Defense published a statement in the evening specifying that its teams carried out a total of 72 fire-fighting missions during this hot and windy day, ideal conditions for fueling the flames. Among these missions were 63 fires in dry grasslands and woods, two houses, two stores, two cars, two generators, one fire in a residential building, and another in several tents. The fires broke out in regions as diverse as Kfarmatta, Baadarane, Bhamdoun, Baissour, Deir Dourit, Aramoun, Baakline, Dahr el-Wahch, Mansourieh, Beirut, Jbeil, Batroun, Akkar... The Civil Defense also indicated it intervened in the Nabatieh region to fight fires caused by Israeli phosphorus bombs in the woods of Markaba, Houla, and Tallousseh. The fire destroyed a depot in the village of Aita al-Shaab. The agency also specified battling several blazes in many sectors in South Lebanon, notably in the Sour district. Civil Defense urged residents to follow directives and avoid unintentional fire outbreaks, especially when weather conditions are so conducive to the spread of flames. The statement reminds readers of the emergency numbers: 125 or via WhatsApp 70-192693. About a week ago, the international environmental defense association Greenpeace sounded the alarm on the effects of climate change in Lebanon, given the recent fires in the past week. In this regard, Lebanese Minister of Agriculture Nizar Hani reminded that a state of emergency has been declared in the forestry sector to prevent catastrophes this year.
