Legendary ITV star ‘can't shake off' role in show watched by 25 million viewers
A former ITV soap star has said she 'can't shake off' a role that projected her into millions of living rooms each week – despite leaving 41 years ago.
Actress and broadcaster JoAnne Good rose to fame in 1981 when she joined the cast of legendary serial drama Crossroads.
As viewers will remember, the axed show followed the lives of staff and residents at a fictional Midlands hotel of the same name and aired between 1964 and 1988.
It was later revived in 2001, though ended two years later. By this point, Crossroads was a plush hotel.
Certainly a far cry from original owner Meg Mortimer's (Noelle Gordon) day!
JoAnne played rebellious Carole Sands, who was David Hunter (Ronald Allen) and his wife Barbara's (Sue Lloyd) housekeeper.
Rough and ready, she caused a small riot on the streets of Kings Oak, had an affair with Kevin Banks (David Moran) and later worked at the local garage.
Following her departure in 1984, she's gone on to appear in Casualty, Last of the Summer Wine, Heartbeat and Doctors.
Despite that, JoAnne still holds the role very close to her heart.
'I can't shake Carole off,' she told the Suddenly Single podcast.
'I'm quite proud of it because my character was the forerunner to Kylie Minogue's character (Charlene Robinson) on Neighbours.
'I played the car mechanic in the motel garage. It had a viewership of 25 million a night.'
In 2021 she recalled her time on the series with the Crossroads Appreciation Society, saying it was 'the best job [she's] ever had in [her] life.'
Speaking of her exit storyline, she added: 'It was like being kicked out of your family and you always believe you'll be asked back.
'And I think probably the problem with me is that I ended up having an affair with someone in it and I don't think they liked that, I think they felt that you should keep the two things separate. So that was probably my downfall!'

Fiona Curzon, who appeared in 13 episodes of the show in the 1970s, didn't think viewers would find anything offensive in the episodes.
'I don't think anyone sitting down and watching Crossroads would be shocked by anything. On the contrary I think they would think, 'what is the matter with the people who are issuing these warnings?'' she was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.
'I just think it is absolutely pathetic. I am so sick of all of this. You cannot say boo these days.'

Emmerdale's new 'super bitch', Casualty actress Jaye Griffiths is relishing her role as the new village baddie Celia Emmerdale's new 'super bitch' farmer Jaye Griffiths has praised the Yorkshire soap for casting a Black actor as a baddie and not a saviour. Already a household name, after a 40-year career that's seen her appear in everything from The Bill to Silent Witness, EastEnders and Casualty, Jaye says her new role as Celia is one of her best ever. Jaye, 61, says of ITV casting her as a 'bitch': 'It was a courageous thing to do. We (black actors) are often portrayed as the saviours, because the white saviour rolling in on a horse is such trope that it's now the reverse – namely black people ride in to save the day. 'But Emmerdale has said 'good and bad people, they don't have a skin colour, there are just good and bad people'. I'm thrilled Emmerdale has done this.' And Celia is a delight to play. 'She is not a wallflower and in the opening scenes, she's like a bulldog!' says Jaye. 'Celia has so many secrets and that's fantastic. 'She doesn't need any friends, she doesn't understand when people get upset and she never says sorry! She gets what she wants and this is, without a shadow of doubt, one of the best ever parts I've been given. 'Playing Celia is so freeing. She never worries about what people think. I love playing Celia.' Aside from her part, Jaye says Emmerdale is a super-friendly place to work. 'Everyone wants the show to be good and they aren't threatened by new people coming in,' she says. 'It's good to be kind to one another.' But Celia is far from kind. On Monday she will turn up at Moira's door asking to rent two of her fields. Despite needing the money, Moira refuses and the two women then enter into a fierce war of words - with Celia being very catty towards the Dingle favourite. Then she falls out with Paddy Dingle (played by Dominic Brunt), who is attacked by one of her security dogs and hospitalised. 'As viewers will soon see, there will be consequences if you don't give Celia what she wants,' Jaye teases. 'Celia is upfront with people and it's not horrible – more a case of 'give me what I want'. The fact people take offence is astonishing to her! One of my favourite words she uses is 'cheerio' as she says it in a slightly threatening way. 'You can't trust what she says is true either!' As for hospitalising Paddy? 'Celia doesn't take any responsibility,' says Jaye. 'Winding Paddy up is very enjoyable for her. She has a run in with Moira, but she will be having other power struggles, not just with the women, but men too. She's an equal opportunities wind up person!' Unlike her character, Jaye is likeable and she has a great sense of humour. With acting credits including Ros Henderson in the BBC 's Bugs, D.I Sally Johnson in The Bill and Elle Gardner in Casualty, she has plenty to boast about. But she says: 'When I was a child, pride was considered a sin. So, when I look back on my jobs, I don't know if I am proud or not. I am certainly not ashamed.' Bugs, Casualty and The Bill were her three favourite dramas. 'I'd go back on The Bill in a heartbeat if they ever brought it back,' she confides. 'My character, Sally, was a bit naughty but it was a joyous show to work on. I used to love getting out the warrant card and there were times I wished I could get it out when I was driving in real life! 'I also did a small film called Care. That was extraordinary too and I loved Bugs.' Married to Paul Bezodis, they live in Hertfordshire with their two rescue dogs. 'Everyone needs someone who has your back and says 'yes' for you,' she says, referring to Paul. 'I am lucky I have that.' Immediately clicking with the Emmerdale cast, Jaye has bonded with Beth Cordingly, who plays Ruby Milligan, and Natalie J Robb, who plays her arch-rival, Moira. 'Dominic, I also had a bit of a crush on when I did my audition,' she chuckles. 'He was so generous and kind with his time and, there and then, I knew I wanted to work with him all the time! All the cast are lovely.' And her secret to proving herself on Emmerdale is simple. Like most things, the best way is to turn up on time and do your job,' she says. She will definitely have one big fan when she makes her entrance in the Dales - her mum. ,Jaye chuckles: 'OMG my mum was beside herself when she found out I'd got the part of Celia. She was so excited and told everyone 'You would think I had been put on the Apollo mission!' And the rollercoaster Celia is about to take us on will certainly keep viewers on their toes. 'She is such a strange, complex woman,' says Jaye. 'There is more to come. It is so much fun. Celia wears farm clothes but there is not a scrap of mud on her. She is immaculate. She wears a cravat and there is a reason for that …' Her advice to other Emmerdale folk is to beware of Celia and give her what she wants! She says: 'I know viewers will think she is a villain at the start, but there is also a lot more to her and she will calm down. 'She will be manipulating people too. I was on ITV 1% Club with Lee Mack and was shocked by the scenes we had to fake
The 1% Club has been an instant hit with viewers - but fans may be surprised to learn that some scenes are actually fake, according to one former contestant. ITV's The 1% Club, hosted by Lee Mack of Not Going Out fame, has taken the nation by storm since its launch in 2022. This primetime IQ game show distinguishes itself by asking contestants logical and common-sense questions rather than relying on general knowledge. With 100 competitors initially in the running, they are gradually eliminated until someone manages to answer a fiendishly difficult question within 30 seconds—a question that supposedly only 1% of the population can solve correctly—in hopes of snagging the £100,000 prize. However, a twist behind the scenes has emerged, thanks to a previous contestant revealing some surprising production secrets. Heidi Phillips, 49, divulged details about her experience on the highly-rated ITV show which she participated in October of the preceding year. Having secured her spot on the show after spotting an advert on Facebook and passing a mock quiz via Zoom, Heidi tells all in a conversation with Fruity Slots. Exposing the true goings-on during filming, she let slip that not everything viewers see is as it happens live. According to her account, while participants focus on answering questions on their tablets, host Lee Mack is busy cracking jokes for the audiences at home. However, here lies the rub: Heidi let on that Lee's humorous interludes aren't shot concurrently with the contestant's efforts. She elaborated in her chat with Fruity Slots, elucidating: "While contestants are answering questions on the tablet, Lee usually takes the time to make a joke to the audience at home. But all his comical parts are filmed later. "When we're answering the question, he remains silent. Then he has to be filmed asking the question again and we have to pretend to put our answers in. That was a bit weird!". Heidi also revealed that contestants had to adhere to a stringent rule on the show, which, if violated, would result in them having to immediately return any prize money. The contestant, who exited the programme at the 35% question, explained: "When we got put in our seats in the studio, they gave us the tablets and told us it was important to keep our eyes firmly locked on the screens and not look at each other. "There were actually invigilators who go back through the show episode to make sure every contestant plays the game fairly. "You could have won the cash prize but if they go back through filming and see you glanced over at another contestant's screen before answering, you'll forfeit the prize." Heidi added: "That's not happened yet - but it was a stern warning!". Despite the strict warning from producers, Heidi said host, Lee, is very charming and "naturally funny", sharing: "He's honestly really funny. Very naturally funny. He also has banter with the warm-up comedian and creates a nice atmosphere." She also expressed her eagerness to return to the show and praised the programme's staff for "going back over the funny anecdotes I'd shared with them and make sure I'd be happy to discuss it on the show if Lee (Mack) wanted to". Heidi, who noted the importance of dressing appropriately for the show, avoiding anything "nothing low cut", remarked: "They seemed really concerned about our welfare and us being happy to share things on TV. They really took the time to check in with us." For those eager to participate and lucky enough to reach the audition stage, Heidi's tip is: "When they ask you how you'll spend the winnings, don't say something boring like paying off the mortgage. Give a really wild question," and shared her humorous approach by saying: "I made silly jokes that if I won the prize, I'd spend it on opening a trifle sandwich shop."
