Recycling of pesticide containers a vital step: Yusof

LAHAD DATU: A recycling initiative involving the collection and processing of pesticide containers is seen as a vital step in promoting sustainable practices and protecting the environment within the oil palm industry. Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) Datuk Mohd Yusof Apdal, said the programme aligns with the national agenda to strengthen environmental sustainability.
Advertisement 'With Sabah recording one of the highest pesticide container entries in the country, urgent and proper disposal in accordance with regulations is crucial,' he said. He commended the Sabah Agriculture Department and participating oil palm companies in the district for embracing the initiative, saying their support ensures continued environmental preservation. Yusof was speaking during the Recycling Programme for Pesticide Containers in the Oil Palm Industry held at Rimmer Estate, KLK Berhad on Tuesday, jointly organised by the Pesticide Control Division, Agriculture Department, with state agencies and plantation companies. He welcomed a proposal by the Sabah Pesticide Control Division to develop high-tech protective gear for farmers handling pesticides, saying it fits Mosti's mission to boost local innovation for safety and productivity. He also suggested a long-term study to assess farmers' awareness of the dangers posed by improper disposal of pesticide containers. A two-year study by Universiti Malaysia Sabah had earlier examined pesticide container management among farmers using both qualitative and quantitative methods, including document reviews, interviews and surveys. 'The findings will help shape a farmer-centric recycling framework and raise awareness of safe pesticide container disposal,' he said. Yusof also praised the contribution of pesticide container recycling cages by seven oil palm firms, calling it a strong show of private sector commitment to national sustainability goals. He said such public-private partnerships could drive meaningful environmental and community impact. Meanwhile, Acting Director of the Pesticide and Fertiliser Control Division Latifah Merais, said the programme is key in strengthening sustainable agricultural practices, especially in managing hazardous chemical waste like used pesticide containers. She said a major objective of the programme is to ensure systematic and safe disposal of pesticide containers while reducing health risks and environmental pollution. 'Recent data shows rising pesticide imports into Sabah's ports,' she said. In 2023, Tawau received 6,377 tonnes and Sandakan 5,124 tonnes. This increased in 2024 to 11,308 tonnes (Tawau), 2,614 tonnes (Sandakan) and 853 tonnes (Kota Kinabalu). Four homes affected in Kampung Panji blaze

LAHAD DATU: A wooden house was destroyed while three others were damaged in a fire at Kampung Panji, here, on Friday. District Fire and Rescue Station chief, Sumsoa Rashid said, his department received a distress call following the incident at 11.57am. Advertisement A team of firefighters was deployed to the scene in two fire machineries and EMRS vehicle. Police, SESB, Water Department and Civil Defense Force were also on the scene. 'Upon arrival, the team reported that four houses were involved in fire. One of the houses was completely destroyed, two others suffered 20 per cent damage while another house suffered five per cent damage. 'The team carried out the operation to extinguish the fire using two streams with three sprouts and managed to put the fire under control at 12.32pm,' he said. According to Sumsoa, no casualty reported in the incident. He said the operation ended at 1.44pm after the team made sure there was no other danger at the scene. Ensuring no one left out

LAHAD DATU: Village Development and Security Committees (JPKK) and village chiefs have been urged to be more proactive in carrying out their roles to ensure that no members of the community are left out from receiving government assistance. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) Tungku Divisional head, Datuk Abdul Hakim Gulam Hassan, said JPKK and village chiefs play a crucial role in helping the government to safeguard the welfare of the people. Advertisement He said every JPKK and village chief must take a more proactive approach, regardless of political background. 'The role of the JPKK and village chiefs is important not only in voicing the development needs of their respective villages but, more importantly, in looking after the welfare of the people. 'JPKK and village chiefs are closer to the community and understand their needs better. Relay these needs to the leaders or responsible parties so that the people can receive the assistance they deserve.' Abdul Hakim said this after distributing aid to 25 families in Mukim Silabukan during his visit to the grassroots on Monday. The outreach activity is one of the programmes to engage with local residents – not only to deliver aid, but also to see first-hand the realities of people's lives, especially among the less fortunate. He said the role of the JPKK, village chiefs and local leaders in providing information will help ensure that aid reaches the intended target groups. In addition, Abdul Hakim encouraged welfare bodies such as the Sabah Zakat Center and the Welfare Department to conduct more frequent 'turun padang' (going down to meet the grassroots) visits to identify those genuinely in need. 'We know that the Welfare Department and Sabah Zakat Centre are active in helping the people, but we urge them to carry out more such outreach activities so that no one is left behind. Seven survive Semporna boat collision

SEMPORNA: Seven individuals survived after the boat they were travelling in collided with another boat off the Seafest waters, here, on Thursday. It was learnt that the boat, carrying six passengers and the skipper, was heading towards town, while another boat was heading towards an island when the incident occurred at about 9am. Semporna Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Akhimullah Adan, said his department received a distress call following the incident at 9.08am and rushed personnel to the scene of accident. 'Upon arrival, the team found seven people including the skipper involved in a two-boat coalition. 'All the victims were safely rescued by members of public,' he said.
