Cong proposes panel with 40% OBC leaders

Indian Express13 hours ago
The Maharashtra Congress has proposed a new jumbo state executive committee with around 280 members, of which 40 per cent will be leaders from the Other Backward Classes (OBC).
The move is perceived as an attempt by the party to attract OBC voters as the civic body polls in the state are expected to be held later this year.
According to the sources within the state Congress, the new state executive committee under the leadership of recently appointed Maharashtra unit chief Harshvardhan Sapkal will be of almost 280 leaders.
It will have around 110-115 general secretaries, 105-108 secretaries, five senior spokespersons, one media coordinator and treasurer each, around 15-20 senior vice-presidents and 35-40 vice presidents.
It will have around 15 per cent women representation.
The final list of the state executive has been sent to central leadership for final approval as the high command is still mulling over it.
'After the defeat in 2024 state Assembly polls, the party has decided to focus on OBCs. The Congress at national level too is working extensively to represent itself as a party which truly stands with the OBCs. In Maharashtra, it has been decided to give additional space to the OBC leadership,' said a senior state Congress leader, who is associated with the formation of the final list.
During the Assembly 2024 elections, the Mahayuti had extensively worked on attracting OBC voters after its dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls.
The overwhelming support of OBCs to the BJP was cited as one of the key factors of defeat of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
With almost 40 per cent OBC leaders, the executive will have 16-17 per cent leaders from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes, 18-19 per cent minorities and 25 – 28 per cent general category leaders.
The party has also attempted to give highest representation to Vidarbha, a region where it hopes to bounce back politically due to its organisation and leadership.
Almost 40 per cent of the executive committee will be composed of leaders from Vidarbha, which includes both Amaravati and Nagpur divisions.
Marathwada and western Maharashtra will be the next focus, followed by Konkan.
'We need to give attention to north Maharashtra where the leaders of Mahayuti have tried to destroy the party organisation at the maximum level,' the leader said.

Congress MP moves adjournment motion notice in LS to discuss SIR in Bihar

New Delhi, July 23 (UNI) Congress MP Manickam Tagore today submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, demanding an urgent discussion in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, on what he described as a 'blatant and unconstitutional attempt' to deny voting rights to the poor, backward, Dalit, and marginalised communities in Bihar through the Election Commission's Special Investigation Report (SIR) mechanism. In his notice under Rule 56 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Lok Sabha, Tagore accused the Modi government of misusing the Election Commission to disenfranchise vulnerable sections of society—a move he said amounts to a violation of the fundamental right to vote enshrined in the Constitution and envisioned by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. 'That this House do adjourn to discuss the dangerous and unconstitutional moves by the Modi Government to use the Election Commission as a tool to systematically disenfranchise the poor, backward, Dalit, and marginalized communities in Bihar by means of the SIR (Special Investigation Report) mechanism, thereby violating the fundamental right to vote granted by the Constitution, as envisioned by Babasaheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar,' his letter to the Speaker stated. The Congress leader likened the alleged voter purging to 'colonial practices,' where suffrage was limited to the elite. 'This calculated disenfranchisement is reminiscent of a time when only the rich and property-owning classes could vote, while the masses were excluded,' he said. He further alleged that the ruling dispensation was exhibiting a 'Manuwadi mindset' aimed at reversing the gains of social justice and universal adult franchise. 'Under the guise of verifying voter identity and eligibility, official machinery is being misused to strike lakhs of poor voters—particularly from Dalit and backward communities—off the electoral rolls in Bihar. This is not an isolated incident, but part of a larger, disturbing pattern to manipulate the electoral process in favour of the ruling party by excluding sections of society that do not support them politically,' Tagore wrote. He stressed that the right to vote is the cornerstone of Indian democracy, and any attempt to curtail this right amounts to a direct attack on the Constitution. UNI XC AAB

BRS govt did grave injustice to Kazipet: Naini

The MLA expressed anguish that the BRS government neglected Kazipet out of political vendetta. He emphasised that since this is a major road connecting two divisions, officials must ensure that public transportation is not disrupted. He instructed contractors to adhere to quality standards in road work being undertaken with the support of KUDA. Mamata Banerjee Questions Health Claims Behind Jagdeep Dhankhar's Abrupt Vice Presidential Exit

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has cast doubt on the official explanation for Jagdeep Dhankhar's unexpected departure from the Vice Presidency, suggesting the former constitutional officer's health claims may not tell the complete story. During a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna on Tuesday, the Trinamool Congress leader expressed her belief that Dhankhar remains in good health despite his cited medical reasons for resignation. Banerjee deliberately avoided direct commentary on the resignation itself but made pointed observations about Dhankhar's physical condition. She characterized him as "a healthy man" whose health appears "absolutely fine," implying that other factors may have driven his decision to step down from India's second-highest constitutional office. The West Bengal leader's skepticism carries particular weight given her turbulent history with Dhankhar during his previous role as the state's Governor. Their relationship was marked by persistent conflicts, formal correspondence disputes, and mutual accusations, with Banerjee frequently criticizing Dhankhar for allegedly exceeding his constitutional authority while serving in Raj Bhavan. Banerjee's concerns reflect broader opposition skepticism about the circumstances surrounding Dhankhar's departure. Her cryptic suggestion to "watch" developments indicates expectations that more information about the resignation's true motivations may emerge over time. The Chief Minister's position aligns with growing opposition criticism of the resignation's timing and rationale. Several political leaders have questioned whether health concerns alone could justify such an abrupt departure from constitutional office, particularly given Dhankhar's active participation in parliamentary proceedings just hours before his resignation. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has been particularly vocal in challenging the official narrative, alleging that the resignation was "forced" by government pressure rather than voluntary medical considerations. TMC leaders Kunal Ghosh and Sushmita Dev have similarly expressed surprise at the sudden nature of Dhankhar's decision, questioning whether health issues alone could explain such dramatic action. The resignation makes Dhankhar only the third Vice President in Indian history to leave office mid-term, invoking Article 67(a) of the Constitution in his formal letter to President Droupadi Murmu. His departure has created unprecedented constitutional questions and highlighted tensions between different branches of government. Opposition leaders' collective skepticism suggests broader concerns about institutional independence and the pressures facing constitutional officers in contemporary Indian politics. Their questioning of the health narrative indicates belief that political factors, rather than medical ones, may have ultimately determined Dhankhar's fate as Vice President.
